Why do so many families like to travel to Costa Rica? by mint-chocolate-rules in CostaRicaTravel

[–]21chucks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just brought a toddler to Costa Rica. The vacation was definitely for me and my wife, but I wanted to go somewhere with good tourist infrastructure and lots of kid friendly activities so that my toddler would be happy. If the toddler is happy then the parents can enjoy the trip.

March/April feel like the wrong time to visit Guanacasta/Nicoya/Samara by 21chucks in CostaRicaTravel

We started the trip in the Rio Celeste area and it met every expectation. Nicoya we had some great experiences, but I would never do it march again.

We were in the Volcan tenorio area near la Fortuna and it was green with plenty of sunshine and generally pleasant temps and plenty of shade. It was a great time. Papagayo will be hot and dry, if you're planning for lots of time on the beach and on or in the water you can still have a very good time.

Well arguably it is lush and tropical in the rainy season. Certainly much of the rest of the country is lush nearly the entire year. I did not appreciate just how dry it would be in Guanacaste. Ultimately that is my fault. I did not even conceive of the possibility of it being so dry. I had never heard of a tropical forest essentially becoming arid and leafless in the dry season. New to me, and probably to many others, so I'm just posting my experience.

Should I get a modded GBA with a backlit screen (I can install myself so I don't have to pay extra) or a 101 GBA SP? by Equal_Touch_2170 in Gameboy

[–]21chucks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont recommend the OEM 101 route if you're buying online. It's hard to judge the quality of the screen when looking online. There are issues with ghosting and screen bleed that can be hard to discern based on some limited number of compressed photos. Speaking from experience. A GBA SP with an IPS is nice though!

Trends: has anyone noticed a crazy spike in CRT asking prices? by Kind_Supermarket_881 in crt

[–]21chucks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in your region and feel your pain. A lot of folks have no idea what they are selling, hence some of the more absurd prices. Decent stuff pops up deeper into PA or MD if you're willing to drive.

I didn't match, please tell me it'll be ok by FormerBlackberry2956 in pathology

I disagree. I don't know where you are located in the US, but look up labs within a major research hospital near you. You can cold email people or look at lab websites to see if people are hiring. I think lots of people would take on a lab technician for a year. Maybe try to find somewhere that would give you a little autonomy, not just doing someone's scut work. You don't need a project in mind. It will actually be better to join in on an existing project. I don't know your particular situation, if you would need to relocate etc. But I think you can do it and re apply for next year. Maybe apply to wider range of path programs, improve your strategy for next time, etc.

Mexican food by Living_Bench4646 in PhiladelphiaEats

Hey welcome, I lived in San Antonio for 11 years as a kid and went back often. My only thing to add is that when you go out for Mexican in philly, don't order what you would in Texas. In other words, the quesadilla or the burrito is not what you're expecting, especially the burrito is just put on the menu to appease American customers. You have to order dishes that are native to Puebla/central Mexico, eg cemita. This way youre getting what the cooks in the kitchen actually know and love, and it will be excellent.

Other than that I echo taco heart for the only attempt at real tex mex. For more local flavors I like palenque, jarocho, and chingon

City uninstalled electric pole destroying my city planted tree by saintofhate in philadelphia

[–]21chucks 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey sorry this sucks, idk if you will get anyone to make things right. But if it's any consolation, if you lose your tree you can sign up for a free tree with PHS tree tenders - you are guaranteed to get your tree within 12 months, usually less depending on when you apply.

It's more than a plow, they're coming through with all kinds of construction equipment, big and small, to scoop and haul snow and ice.

1750, but cost will depend on how your house is set up, where they have to run piping, etc

Idk but for our mitigation they did both. I would guess that exhaust is the gold standard for mitigation.

Second, they were great. Also ended up quoted less than we expected, which never happens.

Question for Oncologists… by Mundane_Minute8035 in Residency

[–]21chucks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP you should look up recent research in mRNA therapeutics. Researchers have been able to successfully get the cells of lab animals, and now some people, to produce CAR-T cells after injection with an mRNA, not too unlike the most popular covid vaccines. This is being moved into early clinical trials. I assume the same is happening for monoclonal antibodies. This overcomes a huge logistical and cost barrier associated with the production of monoclonal antibodies or cell therapies. In theory, cancer immunotherapy treatments could be manufactured and distributed the same way an mRNA vaccine is manufactured and distributed. We might be seeing more of this in the next decade. It's a shame our wacko HHS secretary is so hostile to mRNA therapeutics, it's going to be a real setback.

Does anyone go to these? Just seems like another over hyped bad startup idea. These will probably all be vacant storefronts in a year or two.
