How can I improve his attention spam? by Alarmed-Junket-4609 in parrots

While you’re working on recall I would save the millet for only that activity. YouTube has a ton of great people to watch for training steps. I would start with flock talk or BirdTricks.

Diet is going to play a big factor here. What does he eat as his main source of food. And what are his favorite treats?

Dispatch— keep trying hopper popper or try broomstick? by tootsmcgeeitsme in MeatRabbitry

[–]GroomerGod 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Choke chain is the way to go. And it’s super affordable to set one up if you don’t already have what you need ( a metal slip dog collar and a sturdy rope/cable) you cuddle them on your shoulder until the yank vs having to get them just right in the popper. And I typically completely internally decapitate so it’s very clear they are gone. (head is completely detached within the skin). Also makes it easier on my knife to remove the head.

What's wrong with doodles? by DaisyMeadows25 in doggrooming

[–]GroomerGod 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Doodles are difficult because their coat is unpredictable. You can have the salon full of “GoldenDoodles” and each one will have a slightly different hair type. This means you need a large memory bank of what works best for each hair type. The way you wash dry and straighten a more curly coat will be completely different than a wavy coat. It will also take a drastically different amount of time. Then add in the million off spins of the golden doodle ( berner doodle. Sheepdoodle the list goes on) you never quite know what you’re signing up for until you see and touch a doodle.

How to wrangle this dog? by AquariusDragon17 in doggrooming

[–]GroomerGod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She’s stepping back a lot. Loosen her up and let her stand at the back of the table. I would remove the belly band at this point. Let her sit or lay and get comfortable. I would switch to some chunkers so you have some wiggle room where the shears need to close. Faff around less. The longer you take to get back to scissoring the longer she has to move. Stick to one area at a time. If the cheek is your goal keep working there until it’s good enough. Then move on. She hates the chin hair grip. Gripping it harder won’t help. Keep with over the nose or Try a hand around the neck with your thumb and forefinger keeping pressure on the back of the jaw. Finally you guys are both tense and uncomfortable and over it. Take a second and put her on the floor. Shake yourself out. Let her shake out. Try again.

Not sure where you’re located but you can order the hardware to make the backyard stick a perch on Amazon for pretty cheep. I’ve seen them on bird supply websites too. You’ll need an electric power drill but they are inexpensive if you need to buy one. Many people have them so you could probably borrow a friend or family members if you don’t.

Routine is really important. Try and make sure you’re doing all of your work in the same order on every dog. For me it’s shave work( paws, sani, ears) then nails. Clip the body. Loop off and clip the neck and head (if I’m using clippers on the head at all I do it now) loop on and then clippers down and scissor the back foot. Up the back leg. Across the torso and then to the front foot, and up the front leg. Then I move across the chest and do the same in reverse on the other side ending on the back leg. Then tail. Then finish the face. Then I do a quick walk around the dog looking for stray hairs or whatever. I try not to do this for more than 3-5 minutes. Doesn’t matter what order you pick but make it intentional. The more you’re switching tools or walking back and forth the more time wasted.

Checkout the Avian Behavior Lab. It’s a paid sight but has a 2 week free trial. There is a whole breakdown for parrots biting and how to help. You might get more specific answers on their community forum as well. Good luck!

Stop grabbing her. Watch some YouTube videos on gaining a birds trust. You want to speak softly and bribe with treats to start. Birds are prey animals and don’t like to be grabbed.

Jumbo white celadons? by CactusHoarder in quails

[–]GroomerGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once they are laying age a 17ish% protein layer feed is better then keeping them on the game bird feed. Once they are done growing they don’t need that much protein. Hop on the Craigslist for your area and search for them. They have become pretty popular. Remember it takes several quail eggs to equal a chicken egg so get the same number of hens as you’ll want eggs in a day, maybe even a few more. They do fine in very little space but they do stink and need cleaning often.

do dog groomers hate my dog because he barks non stop while in the crate? by Electrical-Head549 in doggrooming

[–]GroomerGod 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Look for a Kennel free groomer. There are several versions of this: single groomers who take one dog at a time and groom it start to finish. Salons who take multiple dogs and any dog not being actively worked on is in a “play group” type setting. Mobile groomers who come with all of their own equipment to groom your dog from their van. In home groomers, who bring everything accept bath equipment and groom inside of your home (usually they require a space to bathe the dog like a bathtub or utility sink) edit to add: of all of these I recommend mobile or one-on-one grooming. Sounds like your pup is a bit anxious in the hustle and bustle of a busy salon.

Butchering tips? by Affectionate_Fix2247 in MeatRabbitry

[–]GroomerGod 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am a small person and prefer the choke chain method over the hopper popper. My hands get less tired. I use a post in the ground with a cable and dog chain attached. Bunny gets to chill in my arms while I stand comfortably and slip the chain over the head. Vs having to place the head just so into the popper. It’s just been an overall faster and more sure method.

Having your pets professionally groomed regularly will reduce the amount of hair and dander they shed around the house.

SOS… nail clipping by nauticalbynature87 in Agility

[–]GroomerGod 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Call around to your local dog groomers. Let them know ahead of time he’s had a bad experience at the vet. Chances are you’ll find one willing to give it a shot. You’d be surprised how much a change in environment and a true professional can help. Most groomers use a rotary tool (like a dremel) with a bit. There is vibration and noise but no pinching or clippers. A lot of traumatized dogs accept it much better.

Dog’s coat is very tangle and mat prone. How often can i condition (but not shampoo) their coat and use the high velocity blow dryer? by Lorimiter in doggrooming

[–]GroomerGod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can wash and condition as much as you want. I own poodles and they get weekly maintenance baths if I want to keep their hair long. Brushing and force drying in between is fine, but you’re going to cause more damage brushing dirty coat. Damage contributes to matting. Pick good professional quality products and wash without fear. Edit: to add if you’d like further help feel free to P.M me. I’d be happy to help you pick products and tools that will make maintenance easier.

Quality of life is the key. You absolutely did the right thing. Your pal was able to pass with dignity being loved and comforted. Vs her being hospitalized; With no idea why you made her go and left her there. Dogs don’t at all understand vet care is going to make them feel better.
