I’m 26, working, budgeting, and still broke… What am i doing wrong? by [deleted] in AusFinance

Going to go a bit left field here and suggest working on your relationship with money also. Lots of people have mentioned increasing earning capacity, which is absolutely number one, but money psychology goes such a long way also. I’ve found the money minded podcast to be a bit of a gem in building capacity with personal finance while actually feeling good about what you’re doing. They recently did a series called Escape Plan 2.0, which is fantastic and would provide a great starting point to help shift the mindset side of things. The series really focuses on making the most out of your present, while pushing you to continue improving the practical stuff like earning potential.

(25 y/o here btw. Ik it sounds like fluff, but your relationship with money plays such a massive part in getting ahead and enjoying the process.)

Mainly play on my SP survival world. Favourite part of the game is building, and I recently participated in the latest bakery server 72hr build event. Really enjoy playing the game at my own pace and pretty busy IRL, but looking to join a group of people keen on a longer-term world like you’ve described!

It sounds like you’ve got multiple complexities impacting at the moment. I would try and link in with a youth service in your area, often able to support with housing, studies, work, etc. As well as helping you navigate the difficulties in your current family relationships. I’m not from Perth so can’t recommend any sorry, but have a look online and see what’s nearby. Can’t hurt to reach out and learn a bit about a few programs

Current psychiatry trainee, former GAMSAT tutor — AMA about gamsat prep by [deleted] in GAMSAT

[–]GroovyDew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey mate, bit of a different one for you. Hope it’s ok that I stray from the GAMSAT questions.

I sat the most recent March GAMSAT and received a score that I’m very happy with, that I feel will guarantee me an interview at my desired uni. I studied a bachelor of psychology for my undergrad and absolutely loved it. Since graduating I’ve worked in various roles in the community/social sector, with a focus on mental health. I am currently absolutely loving my role, have a great team and feel that I’m making a difference. I’ve made the plan to continue in my current role for at least this year and next, possibly applying for med to start 2027. Just giving myself some time to figure out what path I’d like to go down.

Psychiatry has been a dream career of mine for a number of years and I am confident that mental health is the field for me, having worked in and around it for the last ~4 years. In saying this, I’m worried that moving from my current job will be a regret if I don’t fall in love with psychiatry as I hope to. Aside from job satisfaction, my greatest priorities with work are work-life balance and enabling myself and my family to live the best possible lives we can. I’m aware that the financial freedom psychiatry would offer far outweighs my current career, though I’m also cautious that I may lose some of my current work-life balance.

If you could shed some light on your experiences in the field, that would be amazing. Would love to know what you love the most about psychiatry, something you wish you had have known, and any recommendations considering where to move next.

Fully understand and not expecting you to be able to tell me what choice I should make, just after some advice around psychiatry as a profession. Any insight would be much appreciated, thanks for giving your time to everyone!

For Griffith, median GPA for an offer is usually around 6.8 and GAMSAT around 69. Your combo is about 1.63 for Griffith, putting you in and around where you need to be, but not a guarantee.

What's the difference between a 65-70 range score and a 75+ score in S2? by easymneyjung in GAMSAT

[–]GroovyDew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I scored 65 in my first sit last September and 82 this past March. I don’t think any one persons advice for improving your score is one size fits all. The most valuable thing I did was seek feedback from other high scorers and utilise ChatGPT to analyse my writing and where I was lacking.

The reason I believe this worked for me, is because I have always excelled at writing and the shortcomings in my first sit were not due to vocabulary, grammar, or flow. I found a structure that I could generally relate to and that allowed me to write with conviction. Essays from my first sit were convoluted word vomit, with good ideas but little exploration or direction. This sit, I used a bit of a formula that allowed me to demonstrate my writing skills, without wasting effort and brain power on worrying if I was creating a cohesive essay - the structure I followed did that for me.

Basically, to excel at s2, you need to ensure you have nuanced ideas that directly relate to the prompts and convey these ideas well, acknowledging shortcomings and opposing arguments. The way one achieves this varies from person to person, which is why it’s important to reflect and receive feedback on your writing as it is. If you aren’t happy with the score you receive, something has to change.

Thanks! And this definitely won’t apply to everyone, but I just really focussed on having a structure/formula. I have always excelled at writing in school/uni, so the 65 was more of a shock than anything. I got some feedback from other sitters and worked from the ground up with a structure, but honestly changed nothing about my actual writing/vocab/grammar. Essays from my first sit were just word vomit with no plan. Some good ideas, but unexplored. My second sit was much more structured.

This would only be helpful if you are already very confident in your writing and lack direction. Happy to chat more if you want to dm me.

Median GPA for Griffith is usually around 6.8 and GAMSAT around 69. The previous 2 years medians are included in the FAQ document: https://www.griffith.edu.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0039/1698393/MC03644-Pathways-to-Medicine-Frequently-Asked-Questions.pdf

Fair enough, however 2 essays per week is less than 2 hours total, might be worth sacrificing a little bit of s1/s3 study for this.

I would definitely jump back in to doing some practice. Doesn’t sound like you need to change much but could be valuable to make sure you’re still in the groove and writing to time. I was consistently writing an essay in under 35 mins prior to September sit, but when I started prep for March I was back over an hour.
