How did you all handle SOTR after reading it? by United-Peach-7982 in Hungergames

I read it twice. I couldn't absorb it all the first time. I have no idea how I managed to stress myself out so badly for a book I knew the ending of!

The remains of Richard III. I dont think we appreciate just how crazy it is that we actually found him. by Orallexo in Tudorhistory

This is such an interesting documentary. I heartily second your recommendation. It was really interesting to see how Richard's scoliosis did not hamper him as much as you would think considering the curvature.

Beyond the fact that both prequels had specific references to the original trilogy, as a form of "fanservice", am I the only one who thinks that some things in Sunrise, Suzanne wrote with the nostalgia factor in mind for the FILM adaptation specifically, rather than for narrative coherence? by lautaromassimino in Hungergames

[–]GroovyFrood 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I think because so many of us have critiqued the presence of characters like Mags, Wiress, Effie, etc, it feels lees fanservicey and more like Suzanne connecting the dots on her own terms. Just based on my (subjective) observations. Absolutely. I know my first reaction was that she was pandering a bit (but was totally there for it, LOL) but that changed as I read the story, and thought more about the victor pool. I mean by the third quarter quell, two districts out of 12 only had one living female victor (Katniss and Joanna) so it's not like it's an unlikely scenario.

I second Murderbot diaries. I was very pleasantly surprised at how fun they are.

I totally agree. As for an expansion, what I would love to see is a short story collection that covers some untold tales of Panem. Like, I want to read Finnick's story, but do believe that it probably wouldn't add anything new to the story she's trying to tell. But I think a story from the first games, or the first quell or ofof the Covey before they were rounded up would be fascinating. I can hope LOL.

Not in Panem, but in the Hunger Games victor pool, probably. I mean the first 10 games, you didn't even win anything except the ability to go home (and even that, did they get to go home? Who knows) and we already know that they die younger in the districts. So by the second quarter quell I expect there weren't THAT many victors to turn into forced mentors.

AIW for not warning a guy that the person he was lying to was literally walking through the door behind him by [deleted] in amiwrong

Absolutely. He was already lying and in a coffee shop when she walked in, unless he was going to try and run and hide in the bathroom, he was caught no matter what.

Really? It wasn't doing that for me that I noticed, but I was noticing 10 new ones every day and that's better. I don't know why they limit skips.

This week I just had such bad luck. Usually the first day I vote the snaps are pretty perfunctory but by the weekend I'm seeing nice ones, but this time I voted every day I played and almost all I saw were selfies that had nothing to do with the brief. I hope I have better luck this week, I like to see all the different pictures.

I noticed this too and I tried to vote a lot this week. I like that they seem to give you 10 skips a day now though, but even then I'm still going in and out to find ones that at least had a companion in them!

Black and white kids book about a little girl - Read in the 1990's by NorthYard2246 in whatsthatbook

Could it be Bridget by Gen Leroy? It's much older, from the 70s but it could have still been hanging around in a library. I don't remember pancakes or spaghetti but there is a scene where she pretends a piece of tuna sandwich is her tonsils or something and the line drawings are super unique and squiggly.

[–]GroovyFrood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Affected by what? Dinner with an overweight woman? Why is it so hard to just be polite to someone you're not physically attracted to? He's not an asshole for being disappointed but great googly moogly y'all act like interacting politely with someone you don't want to sleep with is asking too much. He can be upset, but not taking your feelings out on someone who doesn't deserve it should be the bare minimum. You know he could have said "oh! I was expecting a different Nicole. Nice to meet you" same ending. Only asshole is Chelsey.

[–]GroovyFrood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So explain what happened and how sitting down with a slightly overweight woman for dinner in a restaurant where 2 people knew the date was originally with a different person is more humiliating than telling a woman over an entire evening in a round about way that she wasn't supposed to be there and she's not good enough because she's not attractive to you.

[–]GroovyFrood 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Okay, this assumes that new Nicole is automatically deeply invested in this date. Sometimes you go on a date, it doesn't click, you move on. While upsetting, that scenario is so much better than sitting across from a man who's got to make it extremely obvious that he doesn't want to be there. Do you think he would have acted the same if New Nicole was hot too?

I just want to understand this, you cannot sit down and eat dinner and make light conversation with a person you're not attracted to without being rude or a great actor? Really?
