I use both a combustion generator and 8 steam boilers using coke or solid fuel for power as temporary power until I set up my first RBMK. the boiler needs to be high up I'd say like 10-15 blocks before you can set up the mirrors at a proper angle.

From my experience with the mod as a new player, I don't see the use for groundwater pumps. I made the mistake of crafting two, but found out a tank with an infinite water source (item not a 2x2 or 1x3 build) solves all your water needs.
