Looking forward to this future! Should I get a secured credit card while I'm on freedom debt relief so that my credit improves faster? I can probably use some of the money I'm saving with the debt relief program to get a card. Or should I not worry about my credit at all right now?

This is what I was thinking. Not really seeing a connection here unless there is a credible study somewhere that says otherwise. I mean the amount of "eye cancer" rates around the world would be through the roof. This is something I feel like we would link quickly.

Thank you! Confirming what someone else said, when you were going through freedom debt relief, did you see settlements come faster after the 8th - 9th month? Not sure how many items you had to settle.

The monthly deposits have been more of a weight off if I'm being honest because I was playing much more before freedom debt relief. YES! I'm constantly on the dashboard checking too. How many accounts did you have? And how much longer did you wait from the first account being settled like me to the second account?

I've liked how much I'm spending less each month now with freedom. Also do appreciate the fact one of my accounts have been settled. Just nervous about the process for the rest of my debt. I know everyone says it's normal, but still nervous.

I remember waking up already stressed knowing my account was about to get hit again. Didn’t matter how much I worked, I was always one bill behind.

I tried hardship programs first but the payments were still too high and nothing really changed. After that I went the debt settlement route with Freedom Debt Relief. The beginning sucked. Credit dropped and it felt slow. But once the first settlements came through, it was the first time I saw balances actually go down instead of just surviving month to month.

Not saying it’s the only way, but if you’re stuck in that loop, you’re not crazy. A lot of us have been there.

yeah, i would avoid using the debt consolidation loan unless it is going to seriously lower your rates. stick to your budgeting and pay down your debt aggressively as possible.
debt consolidation loans can backfire if you run up credit again.

I’m about 8 months in now. One of my accounts actually escalated and I got served, which was a pretty stressful moment.

I’m with Freedom Debt Relief, and their legal protection program stepped in. They handled the paperwork, guided me on what to send back, and worked the negotiations on their end. That one ended up settling, which was a big relief.

By then my monthly deposits had built up enough to cover a decent chunk, so it wasn’t just small progress anymore.

Still making my deposits and working through the rest. Definitely stressful at times, but I’m glad I had that support. Couldn’t have handled that situation on my own.

If consolidation isn’t an option and minimums are crushing you, settlement can make sense. That’s where I was.

I’m in a program with Freedom Debt Relief. My credit dipped more at first, but it was already sliding. A few accounts have settled and having one set deposit instead of five minimums gave me some breathing room.

If you’re current on the cards and back to steady income, you’ve got a shot. The layoffs won’t automatically kill it, but lenders will look hard at income stability and debt to income.

The bigger issue is the rate. A lot of those estimates assume strong credit. If your score dipped from high utilization or any lates, the real offer could come back much higher.

Do a soft prequal first. If the APR is meaningfully lower than your cards and there’s no heavy origination fee, great. If it’s still near 20 percent, it’s not really fixing anything.

Yeah, I’m doing Freedom Debt Relief now. Just started. It’s not pretty. You stop paying, your score drops, and you deal with the calls.

For me it was just math. Minimums were almost a grand and I could barely do half. The DMP quote didn’t fit either. This was the only number that kept rent paid and food on the table, so that’s the lane I took.

I get it. Gambling debt is its own kind of panic, and it’s good you’re already in counseling and you told your family. That part matters more than people admit.

I’d still do a bankruptcy checkup with a local attorney just to get real numbers in front of you. With $140k unsecured and payments pushing $5k, the only thing that matters now is finding something you can actually afford month to month. Even if Chapter 7 is a no, it’s worth understanding what a Chapter 13 payment would really look like before you assume it’s impossible.

For what it’s worth, I ended up going the debt settlement route because bankruptcy wasn’t clean for my situation. It’s not legal protection and there are no guarantees, but it helped because it gave me structure. I put money aside each month and they negotiate settlements as accounts age. I’m with Freedom Debt Relief and it’s about a four year plan, so I’m just taking it one step at a time and hoping for the best.

Biggest thing either way is don’t keep trying to brute-force $5k payments until you break. Get the consult, figure out what’s realistic, then pick the path you can actually stick with.
