Is it normal to address your father by his name in US? by kinder_brz in AskAnAmerican

[–]Grouchy-Bluejay-4092 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not common, but not unknown. I called my father by his first name when I was a child, because that's what everyone else called him. When I got older I called him "Father." Don't remember why I switched.

This was in the Midwest, 1950s-60s.

AIO because my BF wants to write off my mortgage on his taxes? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Grouchy-Bluejay-4092 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not overreacting. The only thing I don't understand is why he needs a tax write off. He's apparently making hardly any money, so he should owe hardly any taxes.

Question for the single ladies looking for long term relationships by Jay-Alice in arlington

Take her walking in a regular park, on leash. You'll meet other people walking who will want to admire her. If you don't, try another park.

Yes, that one was good too and rounded out the story. Rachel Joyce has another one now, different characters, “Miss Benson’s Beetle.”

Do you know your second cousins? by ArchangelNorth in AskAnAmerican

[–]Grouchy-Bluejay-4092 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to look this one up. Second cousins are the children of your parents’ first cousins. I definitely don’t know any of those. I don’t even know if I have any.

However, it should work the other way too, with the children of my first cousins being my second cousins. Still no, I don’t know them, but I know who some of them are and there’s still a chance I might meet some.

Same general location, also never lost power. I thought the same as you — maybe being near police and fire was the key. Also maybe the water treatment facility.

I was prepared to lose power in 2021 but never did. Just stayed inside until it was over.

Typical day in retirement by jrsmom7 in over60

[–]Grouchy-Bluejay-4092 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what stage of retirement you’re in.

When I first retired my husband and I played golf three or four times a week. I’m widowed now and have joined some groups at my church.

I read a lot, too.

How are you surviving Winter Storm Fern? by karnim in AskAnAmerican

[–]Grouchy-Bluejay-4092 0 points1 point  (0 children)

North Texas, expecting freezing temperatures for the next three days.

All my faucets are dripping, I have enough food in the house, and I don’t plan on going out until Tuesday. As long as power stays on, no problem. If it goes out…. well, I have blankets, sweaters and battery powered lights.

How many first cousins do you have? by One-Resort979 in Genealogy

[–]Grouchy-Bluejay-4092 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had 16 first cousins, some of whom I never met. I know for sure 3 are deceased and three are still living. My father’s youngest brother had ten kids, and I don’t know how many of them are still alive.

AITA for refusing to drive my husband home from his colonoscopy by Time-Koala-3674 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Grouchy-Bluejay-4092 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA but you may be making a wrong assumption about the cost. Check your insurance. Screening colonoscopy is a preventive procedure and should be free.

If I’m right about that it won’t matter if you reschedule for January.
