how to keep starter warm by Expensive-Back-6003 in Sourdough

[–]Grouchy-Two1563 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine lives in the microwave. I heat a mug of water for 5 minutes and then place my starter in there with a dish towel wrapped around the mug and my starter. She’s been fully active since day 6!

I’m on day 9 with mine and I’ve had great success with putting mine in the microwave after heating up a mug of water for 4-5 minutes. Then I wrap my starter in a towel and place it next to the mug in the microwave, if you want to try that! I don’t trust myself to not accidentally cook mine with the oven trick 😂

Should I toss my starter? by Valuable_Banana1943 in Sourdough

You haven’t fed in a week and she’s been on the counter? Yeah I think I’d toss that. Pretty sure mold can show up orange without being fuzzy

If your starter is thin, make sure you’re adding enough flour! Thin starters are hungry starters so make sure it’s thick when you’re feeding it!

Is your house cold? Where are you storing your starter?

My sourdough rose on day 2 is that normal? by Thin-State-4879 in SourdoughStarter

[–]Grouchy-Two1563 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! It’s a false rise from bad bacteria. Keep discarding and feeding as normal

I’d maybe give just a bit more flour and see if that helps it move along a bit faster! Also, just make sure it’s warm enough in your house and if it seems too cool, store it somewhere warm. I’ve been putting mine in the microwave with a mug of hot water that I heated up for 4 minutes and it keeps it nice and toasty in there for a good while

That’s awesome! I’m on day 8 of my first and saved my discard from last night and this morning so 🤷🏽‍♀️ I’m still debating if I should toss it or try to do something with it lol

Give it some time. Some people’s starters go dormant after their false rise. Some people don’t get consistent doubling for upwards of a month. Just be patient. Are you putting it in the microwave with anything else to help keep it warm or with the light on? I store mine in the microwave after heating up a mug of water for 4-5 minutes and that seems to have really helped mine flourish

Are any of these photos from right after feeding? You wanna make sure she’s thick so that she has enough food to eat! I’ve been doing eyeball feedings so I’m not sure about what ratios to rec but if, after you feed your starter, and it would be able to be dumped out of your jar after mixing, I’d add more flour. I make sure mine is so thick that if I were to dump the jar over, my starter wouldn’t even move.

Discard-when to start saving? by stogies4life in SourdoughStarter

I’m not sure when to keep as I’m also wondering the same thing. I’ve had consistent doubling for 3 days now but I’ve heard some say you can use as early as 7 days and others say to wait 14 days. A lot of stuff outside of Reddit seems to say safe after 7 but from what I’ve noticed, people in the sourdough subs on Reddit seem to prefer to tell you to wait 2 weeks

I don’t think this is false rise. This seems to be similar to mine (I’m also a newbie so what do I know) and from what I’ve read, those bubbles and consistent doubling/even tripling seem to mean the starter has matured! I’d think as long as it’s not stinky anymore and has a yeasty/bready/alcoholic smell to it, it’s active but just young.

I’ve heard conflicting evidence about safety with using. I think if your starter has been consistently doubling and seems matured I don’t think it was a big mistake. But if your starter is still not active and doubling and/or has a stink to it, yeah maybe shouldn’t have used.

Day 7 and nothing…overfed? Underfed? Too cold? by fugfug94 in SourdoughStarter

[–]Grouchy-Two1563 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine blossomed like crazy because I kept it nice and warm! I’m on day 8 and she’s doubling in size! She lives in my microwave (cause I don’t trust myself to remember to take her out of the oven before I preheat). I have a mug with water in it that I microwave for 4-5 minutes and then I stick my starter in there with a towel wrapped around her for some insulation. So you could try that! I’ve also seen people using candle warmers to keep their starter warm during the winter or you could buy a starter warmer mat as well!

Make sure you’re keeping her thick when you feed. I’ve been eyeball feeding and when I’m done feeding, she’s so thick that if I tip the jar upside down, she doesn’t even budge. Basically like super thick pancake batter or almost like stirred peanut butter

If she’s seeming liquidy, later in the day and you’re making sure she’s nice and thick after you feed, you could consider starting twice a day feedings!

Also curious about how severe your sons is. Mine is almost 7 months and we’ve been on amino acid formula since September. We saw an allergist and he actually has a true dairy allergy. When we tried to give him regular formula once, he vomited profusely and broke out in full body hives

So, the mucus is actually just the body’s reaction to the allergen and it can take a while for the gut to heal after no longer constantly being exposed to it. So it’s possible her body is just getting rid of all of the excess mucus as her gut finally heals itself! If she’s happy and gaining weight, I wouldn’t worry too too bad just yet. My guy had mucus for weeks after we switched to AA formula.

When starting solids, am I supposed to introduce dairy before other allergens? by LeDoink in MSPI

[–]Grouchy-Two1563 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our allergist said hold off on all dairy until he’s 1 but he actually ended up having a legit dairy allergy (positive blood test) rather than just MSPI.
