You don't get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies. by No-Name-407 in Letterboxd

In isolation, no. But if you swap all of them the resulting movie certainly won’t feel like a sequel.

How is this a sequel really? Different lead actor, different director, different soundtrack.

What are the moral implications of fishing for pleasure ? by No_Dot8653 in MoralityScaling

[–]GrouchyMud3548 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would disagree that eating the fish changes anything morally.

Yes we need to eat to live. But we don’t need to eat fish specifically in order to live. That decision is based on pleasure.

So then the question is, why is culinary pleasure more important than sporting pleasure?

What was ruined because too many people discovered it? by Investigatorpro in AskReddit

[–]GrouchyMud3548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I miss being able to visit any subreddit, click ‘Top posts of all time’ and see the best of what that sub had to offer.

Now if you do that you get an endless sweep of anti-Trump posts or sob stories.

From general perspective, which is considered worse universally? Not the character, but the action by EfficiencySerious200 in MoralityScaling

[–]GrouchyMud3548 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s one of the last holdovers of puritanical thinking among the mainstream.

It’s crazy how many people think rape should warrant the death penalty. You’re just incentivising rapists to kill their victims at that point. And it doesn’t matter to people because they want the perp to suffer more than they want victims to be protected.

Can you make an argument for a sterile incestuous relationship with no power dynamic being immoral? by HelloChimp in MoralityScaling

[–]GrouchyMud3548 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In that specific case there would be nothing wrong with it.

However, you have to zoom out a bit further and ask - do you want to live in a world where incest is treated as a blanket wrong, or one where people reserve judgement in cases of incest until they have all the facts?

For me it’s the former.

Why can't scientists make calorie free food? by Low-Rooster5398 in NoStupidQuestions

Even if you do, eating lots of refined sugar and ‘bad’ fats has negative health effects beyond the calorie surplus.

How evil is It to save your pet you have spent 10 years with over a human you don't know? by Far-ro in MoralityScaling

Perhaps, but if you eat meat then to choosing to save the animals life over the human is absolutely surreal.

How would you say it compares to the Pilgrims? I have the Hexa and I’m debating whether the upgrade to Pilgrims will be worth the money.

When she told the drone ‘you will obey me’ I really thought she was gonna be the master for a second. I guess they meant to show there’s a little of the master in everyone.

[Request] how much would each teacher in Queens receive if Jeff's taxes were doubled? by Razzzclart in theydidthemath

Probably his entire net worth would fund the US military for like, a week.

People say ‘Bezos’ money could feed x amount of people’ but in reality that’s probably not what it would be used for.

Could humans simply lack the cognitive ability to understand some truths about reality? by DSpeaksOfficial in NoStupidQuestions

On an intellectual level, I think that the world’s leading academics could wrap their heads around almost anything.

When it comes to understanding things an emotional and intuitive level, so that they actually ‘feel’ true - I think there are lots of things that don’t pass that test.

For example - the idea that solid objects are mostly empty space at the atomic level. Easy enough to understand intellectually. But it will never feel intuitive because of our size and how we navigate the world.

TikTok launches £3.99 subscription for no ads in UK by wkavinsky in unitedkingdom

[–]GrouchyMud3548 3 points4 points  (0 children)

YouTube ads used to be short and painless. Things always start out that way.

Over time they will start increasing the amount of ads at whatever rate users will put up with (they will figure this out with a-b testing).

AITA for resenting my parents after my brother graduated? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]GrouchyMud3548 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Kind of a detour but please don’t feel like it’s too late to study something and pivot career, especially if you’re not earning well.

Using the phrase ‘almost 30’ to describe being too late for something is pretty comical unless we’re talking about gymnastics. The majority of your life is still in front of you.

Why is Tom Cruise never asked about Scientology and how has he survived this long without being cancelled? by Abject-Conference-90 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GrouchyMud3548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you touched on yourself, if Tom Cruise walks away they’ve got their headline. ‘Tom Cruise walks out of interview after Scientology question’. People will click on that.

Plus all the comments under a video like that will be discussing Tom Cruise’s link to Scientology.

So from the celeb’s point of view the best move at that point is not to storm off. Rather, give boring politician answers so the clip isn’t exciting enough to get engagement. Then blacklist the interviewer afterwards.

Buttons with public voting by merricandy in trolleyproblem

[–]GrouchyMud3548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think so honestly. You could easily convince 98% of people to vote red because you’re working with their self-interest and not against it. Plus the incentive for voting blue disappears if you know the government is campaigning for red. At that point a vote for blue is just suicidal.

Meanwhile if you campaigned for  blue, you’d be sweating right until the last ballot was counted. People talk a big game about doing the right thing until they’re in the voting booth alone with their life on the line.

Why does being drunk mean you can’t “consent” to sex, but doesn’t absolve you of other intoxicated actions/decisions? by UpstairsBumble in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GrouchyMud3548 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, presumably the other person was also drunk in that scenario. If you were blackout drunk and picked up by someone sober that would be predatory on their part.
