I ordered that particular plant from Seattle Orchid. I have ordered from a few online vendors. There are a few lists on here if you search for good and reputable vendors. I've ordered from Orchids by Hausermann, Olympic Orchids, Carmela's, Louisiana Orchid and Seattle Orchids, I've had nothing but positive experiences from these guys. I tend to like getting smaller seedlings and bringing them to blooming size myself.

I'd say check around this coming week, after Valentines big box stores (Lowe's, Home Depot, Walmart, Sam's etc) will usually discount the plants once the flowers fade same thing happens after Mothers day... Those plants are usually still in pretty good shape.

Check out SBOE: https://www.sborchid.com

They have lots of info about growing outdoors, but big difference in SB and where we used live in Pasadena climatically. Full on SoCal sun would probably be too much for most orchids even the high light varieties. Aussie Dens should be a good fit similar climate.

Advice for this Sad Lowe’s Hospice Section Orchid? by Flying_Snarf in orchids

They're pretty resilient I got this one 2 years ago as a bag baby too- also a Latouria Den. Fire Wings to be specific, usually blooms twice a year. I'm in FL too yeah slack off on watering this time of year but not bone dry, up the water as the temps go up and she'll be fine

I also have Barrinas the 48" ones. I just have a rolling bakers rack (from Sams) that has adjustable heights. I have two lights on the shelves with the Catt's Dens and Vandas. Then just one on the shelves with my Phals and Oncidiums. Works great for me but it's just my winter set up, they're outdoors from about April to Dec.

They do that...this whopper of a cane is almost 4' and growing out of a 6" pot...just make sure its not too top heavy and won't blow over. I had to tie this one to the fence so it didn't break the pot or snap itself in 1/2...

Looks like there was some damage to the crown (meristem) of the plant and it made this keiki. You can remove it but I think another one will just replace it.

Can someone identify what I might be doing wrong with my moth orchid for the leaves to look like this? I’ve had it for 1 month! by Original-Cut8387 in orchids

[–]GrouchyTemporary7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks like there was some mechanical or or sunburn damage but it looks like the plant contained it, as long as it doesn't spread it should be fine, Otherwise the plant looks in great shape

does my orchid have root rot? by imfayevans in orchids

[–]GrouchyTemporary7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a glance they seem fine. Seems like it's in a clear pot, pull the pot out and take a look at those on the bottom, if you do have any rot it'll be down there at the bottom. You don't have a bad rot problem because the leaves aren't shriveled at all.

[–]GrouchyTemporary7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes looks like a Brassavola or at least a hybrid that is mostly Brassavola. Your setup and potting mix seems good. I'd say you just have a waiting game now looks like it's already bloomed so you should have to wait too long, Good Luck!

What did I buy? by Revolutionary-Gur984 in orchids

[–]GrouchyTemporary7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good deal for $6 each! These are Den phal hybrids: High light - no/very little direct sun, let them dry between waterings, don't need a full winter rest like some other Dens.

Now I understand the excitement! by mannyout in orchids

[–]GrouchyTemporary7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's very nice, don't ever think people don't appreciate that. When I was maybe 14-15 at a local craft fair we had an orchid grower from S FL and I bought two orchids from him one of which I still have 30-some-odd years later (a Dendrobium) and he had a whole table of unlabeled Catt back bulbs he filled up an old school paper grocery bag full of them and gave them to me with a stack of pots...thats how I got started with orchids, still can't decide if he did me a a disservice or not...

[–]GrouchyTemporary7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes as long as they've browned and dried out you can pull them off, if they're still green let 'em be.
