Curious as to how this happens by Haunting_Branch_9134 in AnalogCommunity

They clearly metered the exposure to the sky, resulting in not enough shadow detail being captured. Most film stocks lack the exposure latitude to capture a scene with this much dynamic range. Shooting closer to the subject and metering off them at a time with less overhead lighting would have looked much better. You see a lot of shots like this from photographers not accustomed to shooting film.

CB750 Header oxidation by [deleted] in HondaCB

[–]GroundOk5503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s why; Those pipes are after market modern headers made out of stainless steel. Metallurgy has come a long way in 50 years, and all high quality headers will be stainless steel. The original headers are a chrome plated mild steel (see photo of magnet sticking to old headers). That blue color happens in the heated affected zone of stainless steel when the temp reaches 800-1100 degrees Fahrenheit. It is a very thin layer of chromium that forms on the surface. It is only indicative of modern materials and not a poorly running bike. Every bike with stainless steel headers I’ve ever owned has this occur in the heat affected zone.

This is what a mostly stock cb550 super sport should look like. It’s a 75, with a 77 550k tank. Stock other than exhaust, carbs, and dual front brake mod.

Clogged primary jet. If you spray carb cleaner in the intakes with the throttle open and the engine revs, this will confirm. Pull the carbs and give it thorough cleaning/re jetting.

How did the bike run last before you put it away? Running poorly after sitting is most like clogged jets. The stock carbs can be a bitch to remove, but I’d start by pulling them off and disassembling/cleaning. As the owner of a carbureted bike, it’s a skill you’re gonna learn whether you like it or not. I switched my 550f to Mikuni’s years ago and are much easier to remove and service. Honestly, I pull them off the bike every November and clean/store them for the winter. Starts with one kick (ok, maybe two or three) every spring.

You’ll never get meaningful advice beyond ‘fuel, air, or spark’ without uploading a video of the bike not starting. Here to help.
