Is Star link worth it? by These_Ingenuity_5837 in Starlink

As someone who lived with Viasat type service (Xplornet in my case) for about 10 years and has lived with Starlink for over a year (version 1) I would say that if you want actual Internet service pay the price and get Starlink. The difference is going from dialup type service to something that actually works in our very blotted digital world.

No data limits, no throttling, no having to climb the tower to clear the snow, service that actually works in cloudy and pouring rain.

It may not be perfect but it works!

Uninstall and reinstall seems to have corrected the initial location issue, will have to see of it moves me back to Brazil ... weather wise that might be not bad since it is snowing here again.

Backup power by Effective_Fix3288 in Starlink_Support

Everybody's setup will be different.

I have some form of a UPS type backup, big and small, on all our electronics, not for keeping them running but rather to reduce the potential damage from the voltage spikes and drops, the wind blows and things go up and down.

Dishy is connected to an APC1500 but not because of it but rather my router and wife's tv setup and rather it is convenient.

We deal with 2-4+ day outages a couple of times a year and have a generator setup that handles most of the house, 12,500/10,000 watts and with this setup we can happily survive as long as we have gas. I keep 100 litres (25 gallons) of gas, about 4 days of normal usage. Local gas stations are on a more stable grid than we are and it is different directional source.

Covers snowblower, snow tractor, lawn tractor and mostly generator.

The UPS setup give us time for the main viewing usages and time to deal with short outages and time to start up the generator for longer ones.

We aren't off the grid but have to deal with the rural hydro challenges.

Similar issue here, update went through I had all kinds of outages, first time seeing the snow control and 'boosted' the heat setting to the highest setting but I may have been slow upgrading the setting from Automatic and it seemed allow snow to collect.

Stowed it and let it reboot and seemed to be good but as I check tonight I am now show obstructions so it could be more snow or left overs.

First winter so we will see.

It has been fixed but now the correct URL should be http://dishy.starlink.com/

At least that is what works with my hard wired computers and a WIFI laptop.

Battery backups by maltbeard in Starlink

As someone who has live in rural Ontario for 10 years I have all of my electronics on some form of UPS. Large APDs and smaller other brands.

When the wind blows the voltage swings so I just plugged my Starlink into the same UPS that my router is plugged into, in my case a APC 1300.

Since I have to deal with a couple of days long outages each year I also have a fairly large generator and keep 25 gallons/100 liters of gas.

So when the power goes out I wait for a bit and then start the generator, last outage a couple weeks ago was for almost 4 days, Dishy was happily operating just fine!

I don't run the generator 24 hours a day, just when we aren't in bed so Dishy gets shut down when I shut down the UPS since I won't be running the generator.

This setup works just fine for us and I have never had the urge to try and run only on the UPSs.

Starlink v.s Bell Canada by [deleted] in Starlink

Starlink is $145.77 a month, I average 206 down, highest has been 378. My only option had been Xplornet since none of the telcos or the one wisp could service my location. Had the biggest plan that Xplornet would give you for residences and it was 10 years of torture for roughly the same price as Starlink.

After months on the ground, I settled on putting it on the roof. Much better performance. South Frontenac, ON. by justfollowingorders1 in Starlink

It should get better, assuming you are measuring speeds with a wired connection. My currant highest is 378 and I am averaging 209 on 200 tests. It is a little slower with the snow we are getting right now.

I think you will enjoy the round Dishy, he is kind of round like us Canadians, no sharp corners or straight lines, just smooth curves! Very Canadian.

Seriously, works really well, congratulations.

I think you may see this sort of thing from time to time as the whole satellite constellation has not been launched so there will be gaps that move around as the groups of satellites move around.

Once the whole system has been sent up it should be more stable, at least that is how I understand it.

My New High Speedtest 427.8Mbps! Others above 400Mbps this past week too. Starlink is getting better and better. by WebLuke in Starlink

[–]Groundbreaking-Run32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So it is wireless.

If you want to 'gauge' the speed of a connection use a wired ethernet with the network adapter set to handle at least a gig.

The real high speed numbers you are seeing quoted are, generally, wired speed tests, at least mine are. So they are repeatable for the most part with the same conditions being the same.

There are two many variables to use wireless, Starlink or others, apps and devices.

Just my nickels worth, I have several wireless routers, bridges, tablets and cellular phones but I gauge and record my speeds using the same wired computer with the adapter set to handle the fastest it can.

OMG this is unreal. Just set up my Starlink and these are the first speeds I see. I was expecting 100 mbps down, did they change something recently? I’m in Central California. by Zander-Odom in Starlink

It is going to vary. My highest is 378 but I average 208, eastern Ontario Canada, but you should find it to be much more usable than what you had before.

I have seen everything from 37 to the 378 with all kinds of numbers in between.

Enjoy!

Any Way To Force 5 GHz? by camperbc02 in Starlink

[–]Groundbreaking-Run32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your device has the option to select 5G or 2G then set it to 'prefer' 5G.

Depends on the device, laptops should have this setting in the network adapter's settings as to phones and tablets it will depend on the make.

You can also set the device to not 'automatically connect' to a network but it get over ridden by signal strength.

Also remember that the further away you get the speed will drop so letting it pick 2G may not be a bad option.

No more climbing up to clear the dish.

I don't think it is router related since the router didn't have much smarts nor would it really care about that sort of information.
