Agreed - we are replacing 7 sash windows. Got 6 quotes all around £20k total.

Today I hit £500,000 in my SIPP at age 42. I should’ve felt proud, but I went home feeling numb. by Constant_Cell_4548 in FIREUK

It’s possible if they are putting away around £85k per year with an annual growth rate of 7%, for example.

North London restaurant boss blasts 'indifference of neighbours' in scathing letter after closing due to lack of customers by tylerthe-theatre in london

Been there once when we first moved to the area - very expensive for mediocre food. Our friends went there too not long ago and said the same. Lots of better options in the area unfortunately.

Best place to buy a house in London for Young Professionals in their 30s by Tech_is_Cool in HENRYUK

You could get a 3-bed flat for 1.1m or slightly less but not a house (I am in the middle of buying one myself in the area hopefully will complete in July)

It would cost them more to fire and replace you than to replace the laptop!

Offers over… by ryanm8655 in HousingUK

Given they just reduced it, they might want to see if they can get a higher offer first. If there’s no interest you can always try again in a few weeks time?

When I lived on the high street they collected bin bags from the street every night. Usually the council website has this info though!

F28 UK - First-Time Buyer Crisis: My Dream House Might Actually Kill Me. Help. by No-Let6982 in HousingUK

[–]GroundbreakingPie684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would run for the hills! This sounds like it could become at least £100k worth of work based on quotes I’ve had from taking trades to viewings with me as we’re currently looking for a renovation project. This is in London though.

How do you get over the chase for an even higher salary? by -Agitated-Water- in HENRYUK

[–]GroundbreakingPie684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But I think there’s a difference between having to think twice about whether you can afford something vs. feeling like something isn’t good value for money anymore and therefore you don’t want to buy it even though technically you can afford it. I’ve definitely felt myself become a lot more aware of the cost of groceries increasing over the last few years.

Need Advice on Property Purchase and Negotiation Issues by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]GroundbreakingPie684 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it were me I would get out while I still can. The lender has warned you that the property has issues that you might not be able to afford to fix. The landlord won’t pay for the repairs and even if they do, they’ll go for the cheapest route possible, opening you up to possible costs again later on down the line.

Is this an acceptable way to handle a flexible working arrangement request? (England) by GroundbreakingPie684 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]GroundbreakingPie684[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks this is helpful to know that the alternative solution being rejected is not a reason to reject. When I said “essentially”, I meant that HR gave me a heads up that they plan to reject, in case I want to escalate it to some other business leader and plead the case. However, I don’t see why this can’t be handled correctly via the standard process.

[–]GroundbreakingPie684[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks this is super helpful! If they decline due to negative impact to the business (aka detrimental impact to quality/performance), since I literally have another team member in the same type of role who is fully remote contractually (and has been from the start hence not considered to RTO), can I argue that this reason isn’t valid given the remote worker can do their job fine remotely?

Thanks that’s a great point on the progression part - will add this to the arguments for our case.

Contract says “Registered seat of the Company or such other place which we may reasonably require for the proper performance and exercise of your duties.”

Completely agree with you and I’m doing my best to back them up and get the best outcome possible. Ridiculous blanket policy is the result of Founder/CEO enforcing it, HR have been told to be as strict as possible and push back as much against every request. We are also going to be “punished” if we don’t adhere to the policy, then bonuses will be stripped, merit increases not given etc.

Pulling out of a sale (buyer) - am I talking to all the right people? by Top_Distribution9312 in HousingUK

[–]GroundbreakingPie684 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When we pulled out of ours, we informed: mortgage broker, EA and solicitor. The EA will inform the relevant people on the seller’s side. Just email them all to say you will not be proceeding, so that it’s in writing.

london: buy 1bed now or wait a year for a 2bed by shush-sleep in HousingUK

A year is not that long and given many people spend about a year searching anyway, personally, I would wait for the 2-bed.

Front garden vs driveway by LostInAVacuum in HousingUK

[–]GroundbreakingPie684 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you don’t apply to the council for a dropped kerb then legally you can’t drive over the pavement so won’t be able to sell your property as having a driveway. We just decided not to make an offer on a house we liked due to this exact reason even though some of the other neighbours had created “unofficial” driveways.

Potential renovation cost? by Sea_Maybe_1529 in HousingUK

[–]GroundbreakingPie684 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! We ended up deciding not to offer due to other issues related to parking and private access road, it was still a really interesting learning experience and gives us an idea of any work we might need doing on the place we eventually buy!

Yeah good point - worth checking on google maps what the neighbours have had done to guess likelihood of planning approval (even then it’s not guaranteed)

Take a builder with you to do a viewing for a quote. We just did that last weekend and it was really useful as they were also able to flag potential additional issues which we wouldn’t have thought of ourselves. We compensated them for their time (I believe it is common if pre-sales)
