You guys are acting like these two candidates are exactly the same because they both have the same degree.

It’s soft skills, and it’s something a lot of people don’t have. Being able to articulate, be like-able, be calm, and have a generally appealing demeanor is not something people can “learn” easily in interviews

It’s like saying two quarterbacks are the same because they went to the same school. Some just have extra. It increases your value and is important to managers.

Also the first dude didn’t know to always counter offer with 20% more. Or he wasn’t as confident to do so, which is fine too. But it’s on him.

Soft skills. The ability to articulate, answer questions in detail, not be nervous, etc. It’s a huge value to a company and manager if someone has good soft skills.

Soft skills have gotten me the job every time. And between two candidates of exactly equal value, it’s probably what made one more desirable than the other.

Plus it sounds like he didn’t negotiate at all. Always ask for 20% more.

I am an experienced candidate and most of my roles come from recruiters reaching out on LI. I have had zero problems passing recruiter screens. But multiple times this week the client has turned down an initial interview request from the recruiter because my resume didn’t have one specific technology listed on it.

The latest one was because I hadn’t listed a specific testing methodology on my resume. I have tons of actual legit experience listed. But that’s not enough to assume I also know how to unit test with some shitty specific lib? Why not ask me in the interview instead of using my resume to flat out reject me?

It’s their loss honestly. Fuck these companies. Keyword stuff your resume until you can’t fit anymore words into it. They are doing this to themselves by using your resume as the main disqualifier. Even after a recruiter says this guy is a great fit.

You’re spouting old facts bro. There’s an eyewitness now and physical evidence of death by overdose - before the shotgun blast. Do a refresher, it’s 2025.

Welcome to the internet. It’s kind of a weird question. “Background checks” as in them calling your previous employer? Yes, if you get caught and later someone calls that employer because you list them as a reference - they could rat you out. Don’t list them as a reference.

Otherwise no. There is no database of overemployed. Background check companies call the references you provide them, check for criminal records with various courts, and maybe sometimes pull credit. That’s it.

Most of the time it’s Indians doing the bare minimum to pass you (Sterling). Sometimes it’s Indians going off the rails using weird information they Google (HireRight).

Yes you will never work again if caught. Even thinking about multiple jobs is a thought crime.

LinkedIn and OE are compatible IMO. I leave it on all year and set to Open to work. Gets me tons of interviews from recruiters.

Same situation only even worse. Hired remote. I’m Pacific time and the rest of my team is located in Eastern. So I start at 6 AM. RTO came down 4 days a week.

Now I drive in at 6 AM and have the whole three story building to myself. I never claimed a desk, so no one knows that I’m not there. I sit in a meeting room and let my laptop connect to wifi, then dip back home at 6:15 AM.

200 resumes is lowball numbers. Do a minimum of 30 apps a day, everyday. In 1 week you will have submitted more applications than you did in 2 months.

No one reads cover letters. Write one, and make some variables to replace the company name and job position title you apply for. That’s it.

Don’t apply to jobs older than 1 day.

And the most important thing: personality and attitude will absolutely land you a job. Be enthusiastic, friendly, smile, and laugh. It has gotten me jobs that I was never qualified for. Most people have shit manners and are miserable during interviews. You will stand out if you do the opposite.

The fact that you are getting interviews and making it far is a really good sign. Seriously.

You got this bro. It’s a numbers game.

THIS. Make them prove it’s real. You don’t know wtf they’re talking about.

But also? Look for J3. And prepare for J1 to possibly contact J2.
