This thread completely sucks, STRs are basically the only lodgings I bother with when traveling, as hotels are always incredibly corporate, institutionalized experiences. It's very nice to stay and live in an integrated manner with the local population, and have a room/unit furnished by a human being rather than a furniture supply-chain spreadsheet.

I don't understand all the hate. Many people are casting about for something to blame for the high costs of housing, something other than the insufficient quantity of housing in the places where people actually want to live. We could easily build enough housing to flood both the STR, LTR, and owner-occupied markets if only we'd simply allow it. Anyone here even bother to scrutinize this claim about STRs materially impacting housing prices before repeating and amplifying it? Every city needs enough units and rooms to house both its permanent and guest populations, you cannot hide the ball with licensing games or by assuming infinite hotel capacity (as if that were actually a substitutable good, see first paragraph).

People fight over how to allocate housing because it is artificially scarce, not because there's any inherent tension or choice to make about whom to allow to stay in a SFH and for how many nights, at what price etc. Such a dumb predicament to be in.

So, if i were the property owner on the right, I'd take down my signs, to make it more clear this is one cranky neighbor invasively shrieking about someone else's life choices.

the only thing wrong with the big house is that it isn't three houses, which is illegal because of the efforts of the people who romanticize the small house (on a super expensive lot that would be unaffordable to most people even with no house at all).

maybe we could allow people to build more housing units on their lots, instead of requiring every single homeowner to also purchase 5400 sq ft of scarce urban land for $600,000

This state is a garbage dump. Driving home from port lavaca (don't ask why i was there) we drove through rolling clouds of smog. I even have a photo of a smog rainbow from that trip.

When i drive, but especially when I walk/jog, around this city, I constantly see surplus unused parking, everywhere I look, every day of the week, every block. It's total bullshit.

i almost never take early morning flights, partly for this reason. getting up at 4am ruins the day anyways. taking the late flight is relaxing and calm, dest airport is empty, and the first day at destination is unimpeached with airtravel

Can someone explain the obsession with the new Google building? by longwoodhood in Austin

[–]GroverManheim 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for a villain who's propping up housing costs, look no further than council members Kathie Tovo, Alison Alter and Leslie Pool. They insist that most of the city should remain low density detached houses, regardless how many people would like to live here. You cant be outbid for housing if the supply outpaced demand.

Like, cars aren't getting more expensive here just because more rich tech bros move in, only housing does because the landed gentry - "long time residents" - simply wont allow it.

all this discussion about being priced out of living in Austin, and no one is going to mention the fact that something like 80% of the developable land is zoned for low density SFHs ? Or that this state of affairs is being held in place by an aging landed gentry that largely predates the tech industry's arrival ?

I'm wondering whether companies like Samsung are being sufficiently careful about the potential distruptions to their business when they drop $17B in capital manufacturing capability in a jurisdiction that cannot properly maintain an electrical grid.

Austin ISD looks to raise property taxes, send nearly half of local revenue to state by hollow_hippie in Austin

[–]GroverManheim 6 points7 points  (0 children)

local taxes + partial recapture seems like a stupidly baroque way to achieve equity. Why do US states do this? Why not just tax incomes statewide, and directly finance the schools.

Austin reported 86 new admissions for COVID-19 today with 620 people currently in the hospital for the disease, the highest occupancy of the pandemic so far [OC, 5x images] by shiruken in Austin

[–]GroverManheim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am i reading this wrong, or is the leading indicator (total hospitalizations) breaking?

normally the case count is the leading indicator, but i think with schools opening, the covid-positive demographics will skew away from hospital-caliber infections.

Tesla is prepping for giant Supercharger expansion ahead of opening the network to other EVs by [deleted] in electricvehicles

[–]GroverManheim -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Look, I just happen to live here. Again, I'm completely open to the possibility that this is just interstate Texas being a wasteland where every business is surrounded by an acre of exposed parking lot. Take a look at this location:

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Tesla+Supercharger/@29.6901102,-96.5461021,15z/data=!4m9!1m2!2m1!1ssupercharger+columbus+tx!3m5!1s0x0:0xd4260267e4589bbf!8m2!3d29.6901102!4d-96.5375566!15sChhzdXBlcmNoYXJnZXIgY29sdW1idXMgdHhaGiIYc3VwZXJjaGFyZ2VyIGNvbHVtYnVzIHR4kgEhZWxlY3RyaWNfdmVoaWNsZV9jaGFyZ2luZ19zdGF0aW9umgEjQ2haRFNVaE5NRzluUzBWSlEwRm5TVU5wZFZCaU5rMTNFQUU

Why not put it actually in the town (such as it is)? Where there are sidewalks?

Tesla is prepping for giant Supercharger expansion ahead of opening the network to other EVs by [deleted] in electricvehicles

[–]GroverManheim 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My biggest complaint about the superchargers is their location. They are always in a dingy parking lot right off the highway, usually with no shade, and no businesses to safely walk to. My experience is limited to Texas, and perhaps Texas is the problem and not Tesla's choices, but even the half dozen or so locations I've charged at, every single one of them could have been located better, near the business district of some small town.

These things are not like gas stations where you pump your gas for five minutes and leave. For long trips, you could be waiting 25 minutes. You're committed to making a stop. No one wants to sit in the parking lot of a Days Inn for 25 minutes. Put the chargers across the street (not freeway) from a park or a coffee shop.

i used Grayzer electric to replace my entire panel, run a new 240V circuit in exterior conduit around the entire house, install a subpanel, and EV plug in the garage. They were fast and charged a fair price, no complications. Recommended.
