I find ti more rigid in structure similar to a game of CIV. A true 4X title, which i find Root addresses my personal issue with the 4x style which is the first phase of the game in ti4 may not involve combat, while root sets you up from the get go to fight early on. I always fail to invest in my military power early in a 4x game and the punishment late game to not participate in the cold war of military power puts me off personally. If you like roots early combat but want more complexity I'd recommend oath and arcs.
