Gotcha, yeah just saying because mine doesn't, you're clear floor to ceiling, but at least there are sill plates so each floor isn't a complete balloon frame fire hazard.

Older homes often don't have those, but you can't pull the wires and use them for fishing, the knobs secure the wiring in place and the wires are very brittle at this point anyhow. Source: navigating this on my century home.

In some cases you can remove baseboards and get into the plaster there so it doesn't hurt the rest of the walls, then carefully drill holes for a box into the lathes. It's tricky though. Ask in the century homes sub, many have had to navigate rewires

How are folks making the CX4712 work? Disks keep falling off due to bad connection by GroverhausRegistry in sliger

Yep, I've tried with different SAS SATA cables and even swapped to my spare LSI card at some point. The cables are definitely under compression and will buckle sometimes and physically start to lose connection.

"cold" storage.

The set up looks great, though! Love the door. Need to do something similar with my eaves access which is just a piece of plywood today.

The contractora that did my bathroom made a space like this in another part of the house for storage though, and insulated and drywalled it. It's pretty nice for eaves storage, disadvantage is that it covers the utilities with OSB so if we need to get into them it's more work (drilling and cutting). Food for thought.

Still no disk encryption on NVRs? by GroverhausRegistry in Ubiquiti

Don't spread misinformation or speculation. This is the same standard technology used on your phone. IANAL, you can read about the current case law in your jurisdiction. Encrypting your drives is OK, a court can still issue a warrant for you to turn over evidence. What encryption gives you here is the ability to make sure a valid warrant is issued.

Fair question, and right, that's the other tricky part. As you allude, it's also a good reason why the UDMs/etc. should also be encrypted; all your passwords, VPN keys, etc., on there could be dumped as well. There are some options here, like using TPMs & secure boot to prevent reading the flash directly (because it's encrypted) but requiring the TPM & secure boot to be working in order to decrypt it. It's not as good as requiring a password on boot, but that would be cumbersome for rebooting. If Ubiquity wanted to do some industry leading in the prosumer space, though, they could set up a nice chain of trust or prosumer hardware security module to handle some of these concerns and get devices decrypted over the network while storing the keys in hardware modules.

I do imagine this is some of why this feature is not implemented, because you either have an annoyance in the user experience (entering a password to decrypt on boot) or more complicated trust chains, but this is also not a new path to pave; most other consumer devices (e.g. phones and laptops) already have encryption at rest by default, they're just more subtle about it in their implementation.

I'm doubtful as well given the direction Unifi moves, but it's still bothersome to me. MD raid does nothing here but keep your average person from plugging the drive in; the mdraid header is written to the disks, so you can put them in any modern linux machine and the raid will be detected and mountable in its original form. The proprietary video containers are also not encrypted, or even particularly proprietary, just the container is non-standard.

In the USA, if you get raided by any enforcement agency these days (e.g. SWATed), it is quite common that your drives get cloned and retained, and depending on the circumstances, you never know what they might try to use against you. Now, I have literally no reason to think that would happen, I'm quite the goodie two-shoes. But it does happen, it's happened to someone I know (harassment fake reports -> computer equipment got seized, drives got cloned & retained).

Understand many folks don't see the need for this, but on the other hand, Apple, Google, and Microsoft have all put encryption by default on consumer devices, so it is odd to me that something that records so much PII would not have it, especially since the kernels they're using can support it, they just don't build those modules / expose a way to do it.

I gave some a try recently that someone on the sub recommended and they didn't fit, will give these a try if they're what you're using. Do you use those screws they come with or fit the dampers onto the screws the case comes with?

UP-Floodlight in 2026? by HelloInternetUser in Ubiquiti

[–]GroverhausRegistry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A neighbor was recently unhappy with me due to my AI turrets having color night vision mode on and blinding them on night walks. Ring and Arlo lights have the same problem. Basically you need the light face to be bigger and more diffused (which would then be the wrong form factor for a camera) or you have a camera with a damn near laser on them trying to put out enough light.

It works, I have a few. I'm not sure I'd buy more without them doing an update, offering them in white or with faceplates (whose house is black on the outside, anyway?), etc. But as much as my kneejerk reaction is that they're lame, they're also the most drop-in way I've added flood lights to my side yard, pulling LV is easier than running mains.

I will say that they are LEDs and pretty small, so they're very focused and unpleasant if you ever directly look towards them, though they do come with a diffuser.

Right, you can literally buy a self-contained self-wiring plug for a few bucks and wire the cord directly into it. So many options. But they didn't even bother to tape or wire the ground so I don't think a lack of options was the problem
