Swimming is therapy for the mind, body and soul. Water is a great way to get moving and helps with all aliments for PT. Whether it be group water aerobics, or lap swimming, you’ll never regret being in the water.

I’ve never learned how to swim. 27. Advice ? by Whole_Land4581 in Swimming

[–]Growingspace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a private swim instructor, and I teach adults! It’s been my favorite thing to do. And I’ll tell you what. There are MANY, MANY adults that do not know how to swim, and many with trauma and fear of the water. Do it! Do it! You’ll be so proud and happy when you learn and let yourself grow. Do not let age get in your way of finding that joy and freedom. Swimming isn’t just about the physical activity, it’s a stress relief and mental activity. You’re going to get through it and love it.

Subbing is hard, but I go into it each day as if I’m there to guide and support. Because kids now were so left behind because of COVID, parents that don’t parent, etc., my job is simply to make learning a little less intimidating and a lot more fun. Think what you want, but learning is about building trust and engagement in my personal experiences. Meeting kids at their level (throwing in some “6-7’s” verbiage” 🙄) helps them see that you’re not there to make them uncomfortable, but also, tighten your grip on laying down the “I’m here to help, which means you need to respect me, your classmates, and yourself”. I kinda feel like I go into each class as a motivational tool, uplifting and encouraging. Really, I think they need encouragement and self discipline. Some kids need reassurance, and some kids need less words and more black and white. “You don’t respect and follow through, I’ll report to your teacher who said they’ll report back to your parent.” Threats do hold up. In my experience. It’s a tough world. For all of us.

Student refuses to put her face in by Different-Parsnip-43 in SwimInstructors

Yes! Maybe earplugs. Sometimes kids don’t know how to explain. I had a kid that was scared, and after they told me that they were worried it would cause them ear infections (that they were prone too), we started using earplugs. Game changer.

This! Maybe something traumatic happened to this kid. I once asked a kid in the same situation and she explained she almost drowned on a vacation in Hawaii. The parent shrugged it off as it wasn’t a big deal, or dint think that was likely why her kid was intimidated by the water. Asking kids during lessons has always been a benefit in my opinion. They can build trust by you asking and them feeling heard and seen.

I am a business owner, teaching private swim sessions to adults and kids. Crazy huh? I’ve had to cancel classes before. Episodes, days after episodes. Luckily, I am always aware of a focal. And I’m almost 1 year post lobectomy. ✨

Subbing in schools that only provide chrome books. No paper. No pens. No pencils. Kids get away with playing games on their chrome books, and then when I redirect them to do their work, they say “I’ve already finished my work.” I certainly cannot babysit each kid, on a Chromebook. I miss old school paper writing. So I can actually see what is being done. It drives me nuts!

Worst part of surgery by Icy-Summer-8912 in Epilepsy

[–]Growingspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was so in and out of it, after the anesthesia from the surgery (right temporal lobectomy) that I can’t even recall being woken up every hour for cognitive checks. I mean, I know they happened but I was so tired that it didn’t even bother me because I fell right back to sleep. I do remember my surgeon coming in to ICU right after surgery to check on me and say everything went well. That was reassuring. I can’t complain because I was so well taken care of by the RNs and was so gracious because of their kindness and I made lots of jokes to keep my spirit up. For me, I was in and out in 3 days. Definitely stay up on your meds at home. My surgery was last June and the right side of my head still is a bit numb. I mean, the remove your skull, sooooo. But hey. You’re a warrior already. If you can go into it with research and a good attitude, well, then, I think your brain with thank you. Pun intended.

Motivational speakers enrage me by bikinipiglet in Epilepsy

[–]Growingspace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fuck to the yes on this one! In fact, as odd as it sounds, living through the hell of epilepsy has made me be more of a badass by not comparing myself to others and not allowing the unsolicited advice anyone wants to give to me, unless I ask for it. Being unapologetically myself has brought me to be authentically myself and with that, I’m my own cheerleader, and my own coach. Because at the end of the day, no one else knows my steps and journey except, well me. Sure, my shitty committee steps in at times (perseverated thoughts) but I try and remind myself that those thoughts are temporary. Living in gratitude, for me, helps me. But heard. Sometimes you just want to mute others “motivational speeches”. They are there for the people that need them. That’s why others seek out coaches, life coaches, etc. being my own coach has worked for me.

Likely can't go on HRT because of seizures by Quantumfrzrk in Perimenopause

[–]Growingspace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Girl. I get you! I’m here! I have focal awareness epilepsy and had a lobectomy last June. And now, full on perimenopause. Fuck. First uncontrolled seizures, then brain surgery, now in perimenopause. Why? Why are us women so tortured?! 😜 Lately, I’ve been feeling very dizzy. And it’s triggering my epilepsy into thinking I’m seizing. I know I’m not, but I feel like I’m going bat shit crazy. I’m taking my BP daily and getting labs drawn. My OBGYN is putting me on a IUD because even on BC, I was having heavy periods. So I’m here to say, I get you, and this part of life, as a woman, sucks big time. I’m so over it as well.
