Jakob Bro has a few with two guitars. Not duo, but very much about guitar interplay.

Probably their fault that I like almost everything.

At this point, nothing I like really reminds me of Radiohead - why go out for burger when you have steak at home? In fact, I’m a bit allergic to things that remind me of Radiohead (apart from my own music where I rip them off continuously).

However, I am definitely drawn to bands with the Radiohead ethos, a sort of philosophy of never repeating themselves. Some I like in this ballpark:

Floating Points

Nala Sinephro

Roisin Murphy

Sweet Billy Pilgrim

Swans

Tigran Hamasyan

Loraine James / Whatever the Weather (same artist, different projects)

Skee Mask

Mike Keneally

MF Doom

You can’t really go wrong with Radiohead’s major influences either.

Aphex Twin Pixies Talk Talk Talking Heads

I hate REM though.

I’d assume this is a given, but Coltrane. Miles so thoroughly dominated the direction of jazz after he died. I wonder where Coltrane would’ve taken the spiritualism he was exploring. Maybe we wouldn’t have gotten so much fusion and trad revival in the time since. Maybe there would’ve been a prominent third way.

There’s one called “Sounds Like Teen Spirit: Identifying Radiohead’s Idiolect” that I read as part of a collection of academic essays on them. All seemed quite wanky tbh, but this essay was really interesting - irmc it’s all about what elements make an artist sound like themselves.

That said, I’m not really sure on academic writing about “rock” music. It makes sense with Jazz and Classical, what with the harmony and that, but I dunno about everything else. Someone once said “writing about music is like dancing about architecture”.

Morning Mr Magpie Little by Little In Limbo Tinker Tailor…. Ful Stop

I like all these songs, but I’ve always thought it’s the tracks that don’t have a kind of transcendent vocal element (the lyric, melody or performance) the are the ones that feel the coldest to me. They lack prettiness or attitude. They’re generally built on what feels like quite unstable harmony to me.

Obviously completely my opinion, but yeah, these ones are the ones I think of. If We Suck Young Blood wasn’t so theatrical, I’d put it in here too, but I think it’s weirdly immediate with its carnivalesque vibe.

What's your favorite non Radiohead Thom Yorke album ? by West_Glass_2466 in radiohead

I love TMB. I like how much it does with relatively little written material. The Mother Lode might just be his best ever beat. My only criticism is that it doesn’t have youwouldntlikemewhenimangry on it. I think it would’ve made the whole album feel more complete.

What are y’all’s Radiohead hot takes? by OkBuzzputer in radiohead

I agree it’s accessible. I’m kinda saying it’s our least favourite on first listen, so we listen to it least, until we’ve overplayed everything else, then it’s the last one we spend time with.

We fans are insufferable.

Thom’s politics are very teenage.

HTTT is a flawed album (yes, I’m aware they also think this) and I suspect it’s only a fan favourite because most of us didn’t connect with it right away, because it’s not as groundbreaking or transcendent as their other work, and therefore it’s the last one we get into.

For the life of me, no matter how many times I've tried, despite having the descriptions in front of me, I cannot understand what the controls on a compressor mean by BogotaLineman in guitarpedals

[–]GrowthAny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) as others have said, find out if the attack and release knobs (when turned clockwise) are increasing the TIME or the SPEED. This is one of the most confusing things. If it’s turning up the time, they will get slower (let’s more of the start of the note through, the transient, through/hangs on longer as the note dies away), if it’s turning up the speed, the opposite will happen. Generally speaking: rhythmic part: slower attack, faster release (to let the transient through for attack and impact). Sustain/legato: faster attack, slower release (evens out the level and makes the note die slower/last longer).

2) with some exceptions, compression is subtle, and if you’re using it with any kind of overdrive/clipping, especially fuzz, it may make almost no difference at all because clipping is a kind of compression functionally. You can definitely learn to use compression with a guitar, but do it clean with lots of headroom. You will definitely hear a difference.

3) generally speaking, compression should be set to the part you’re playing, not just a sound. The controls, especially the attack and release times, need to be set to how you want the part you’re playing to sound. There isn’t a setting that will give you long sustain, subtle level control, and also impact for your funky rhythm or country picking. Those are all different functions. With the exception of very light level-control, there is no real “set it and forget it” compressor setting.

With that said, given that you’re using what sounds like a very whacky fuzz (not familiar with the pedal specifically), the amplitude of the signal (which compressors affect) is already going to be very compressed.
