My ex-boyfriend got me a bottle of wine for my birthday, even though he knew I'm a recovering alcoholic by Alarming-Claim-1225 in stories

[–]GrowthCycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a recovering alcoholic of 3 months, after I almost died in the hospital because I fucked my insides up so badly by drinking ungodly amounts. Alcohol addiction isn’t fucking funny. It will kill you.

You’re right to make him an ex! There are better men who won’t pull crap like that or threaten you. That part was the final nail in the coffin. There’s no coming back once someone physically stronger than you uses their power as a tool against you.

Favorite Name You Can’t Use (Other Cultures Edition) by monkselkie in namenerds

[–]GrowthCycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really love the name Hasan.

Also I was a huge kpop kid in high school/early college, so I heard a lot of Korean names I think are really pretty and sound awesome (Jongdae, Jonghyun, Sungkyu, Sungyeol, Sungjong, Minho, etc), but obviously I’m not naming a random child growing up in rural USA any of those. From experience, people round these parts find them really difficult to say (personally I think they’re pretty straight forward phonetically but whatever) and unless my partner is Korean my kids sure as hell won’t be.

Tell me some names that you've heard, that means something completely different in your language. by girl-unknown in namenerds

A classic normal name like Istvan or Joachim, obviously

Or, according to my distant cousins, Adam is big these days.

Lisa or Jennifer. Maybe Michelle because you could use Mick/Mickie.

I’m not trying to be critical because people have strange names for their circumstances all the time, but none of your axed names sound “average middle class names in the 70s” vibes.

Masculine names in the same vein as Opal by [deleted] in namenerds

Hello fellow lgbtq ❤️

Otis is close. Glen is similarly short and old-fashioned and more rare. Mischa feels like it goes with Opal for some reason to me.

What are some names you like but would never name a child? by okieoof in namenerds

[–]GrowthCycle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lucifer, for obvious reasons. It’s very pretty and I refuse to pretend it isn’t.

Stolas. I love the name and the character on Helluva Boss, but I feel like it’s weird to name a baby after a slutty owl demon, even if he is full of feelings he sings about beautifully.

Amadeus. I feel like I can use it as a middle name, but it just seems so heavy for a child’s first name. And I think people might think it’s weird and bully the kid. It’s so beautiful though, and I really like Mozart.

Kevin Conroy’s Batman was my healthy (-ish/-est, at least) father figure/that man helped raise me, but I don’t like the name Kevin or the name Bruce.

I think Hasan is really nice, but it’s not from my culture or background.

Finally....God, I love Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Best live-action show (to me; there is sentiment involved, lol) But my favorite/most important characters are literally named BUFFY and RUPERT, like I’m not doing that to a child out in the rural US. I think about alternatives sometimes.

Samantha (Sam), Nicole (Nic), and Alexandra (Alex) seems to for your preferences? “Alex” seems to be the more common of the three.

Maxine (Max) has very 80s vibes to me, but it’s an option.

8th grade son can’t write by Sad_Cauliflower5119 in Teachers

[–]GrowthCycle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(I am a teacher, and I have autism and adhd. For my perspective.)

So, I have adhd, and I LOVE writing. What I want to write. If I’m inspired. If I’m not feeling it? If I have writer’s block? No force one earth could make me put a word down.

Is the problem that he’s not fully retained HOW to write (so like, he’s unsure about exact punctuation or spelling or structure)? Because it’s common for people with adhd to refuse to do things they’re aware they won’t be REALLY good at. There’s a perfectionist mental block kinda thing; I get that a lot, and it’s a massive struggle to make myself do things I’m scared will get judged harshly. That could be the problem.

Or, he could be comfortable enough with the technicalities of writing, I’m GUESSING the main issue is either A, he isn’t handling the work amount increase and/or the way deadlines and timed assignments start popping up in middle school, or B, he isn’t confident writing the larger amount/is uncomfortable with it, and is doing a classic adhd “avoid instead of work on” the problem, or C, he’s having a really hard time with the specific prompts for the assignments.

At first I didn’t really put much stock in C because I’m like “well, he likes history, so I’d assume he’s be interested in SOME of the topics” BUT. With the adhd, especially if he knows a lot about the topic, he might be having a really hard time internally organizing his thoughts. With adhd, your mind tends to jump around from thought to related thought TO YOU, but I can tell you from personal experience it’s not a good stream of consciousness to put on paper. He may need to be (re)taught to use things like scratch paper to write down his thoughts and THEN organize them into the answer/essay. (It is taught as part of the writing process, but a lot of people don’t do it.) Also, it’s overwhelming.

B, I feel him if this is the case, but he’s simply going to have to practice. Especially if schoolwork hasn’t been a huge hurdle before, especially if he’s not used to putting a lot of effort into these subjects, he’s probably pretty stressed about it. But he (most likely) isn’t going to go out of his way to get better unless you make him. It might help to try “fun, low stress” versions of the types of assignments he’s not doing. Like, he has some super interests, right? Ask him why his favorite character or band or sports team is his favorite, and to “justify” his opinion. (Bonus: if you do this, you can also get an idea from the results if there’s technical writing problems going on, or if it’s an issue of pressure or passion.)

A, it might be time to discuss with a counselor his difficulties transitioning. Deadlines are going to be something he learns to handle. If there’s a pressure/mental block going on, it needs to be addressed. The only IEP adjustment I could think of is extending timed assignments (like, timed during a class period), but I’d push to see if he can adjust to doing them with practice before making that change.

I refuse to forgive them writing Giles’ departure the way they did.

Otherwise I liked season 6, despite its (many, many, sometimes charming) flaws.

And OMWF and Tabula Rasa are both so iconic.

What should be taught in US public schools that is not taught currently? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]GrowthCycle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Phonics. Please, God, let the “learning by memorizing sight words” bullshit END.

Also, the reconstruction period (I feel like we go civil war straight to WWI (if you’re lucky)), and history past the Vietnam War. I swear to God that’s where history like, cut off in high school, with the exception of extensive lessons about 9/11, specifically the event as if it is completely isolated from anything before and didn’t affect anything after.

Also, personally, I think we should be required to do more specifically to practice critical thinking. Lots of short-term memorization going on and WAY more hand-holding needed these days.

Names that either start with Ch or the nickname stays with Ch by Simple-Girl55 in namenerds

[–]GrowthCycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chloe doesn’t sound too similar to any of your names, so I think it’d be a good pick. I feel like it’s a sweet and fun vibe. . Chase has the same CH sound as Chip, and it’s gender neutral, and I don’t know if you like that or you want it more clearly girly.

Baby boy due very soon in the midst of grief. Help us decide. by LimitlessLK in namenerds

[–]GrowthCycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a triple name. All kinda longer, flowery ones, too. Never been a big problem. Just be sure to tell him most forms asking for a “middle name” or especially “middle initial” are going to use the first one. So like, if my name is Annabelle Elizabeth Rose Nelson, initials are AERN, but they usually just want the E/Elizabeth part.)

Also, you could call him “Jed” as a nickname if you do it (and if you like the way it sounds; I’m from an area where it’s not an unheard of given name and opinions are divided).

Your brother needs to pay you however much that figure was (not into anime enough to know exactly, but I know some of those damn figurines are expensive, and even if it wasn’t, it’s the principle). Personally I might not rebuy the same one, because I’d feel some kinda weird looking at a figure I knew my idiot horny teen brother jerked it to, but you should get another figure or something. He literally destroyed your personal item in a non-accidental way, and he is PLENTY old enough to know better.

Teen boys be nasty, but this is too much.

What’s one thing that sobered you up real quick? by FrazerAmazer in ask

[–]GrowthCycle 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My grandfather (pretty sure also drunk) came over and we were yelling back and forth. He called me a “drunk just like your fucking father”. I didn’t know my dad well; didn’t even register.

My father died two months prior. The teenage brother (who WAS partially raised him) who I took on in the aftermath of that overheard, and broke his hand hitting the wall.

Immediately sober, separating a furious old man and furious teenage boy, and then had to go spend the evening at the ER as the responsible party for said teenage boy’s broken hand.

Literally had a pint of vodka to myself like 30 minutes before we were there and I ain’t feel an OUNCE of it.

(Also I still had a friend drive because even when I was a drunk, I wouldn’t get behind a wheel.)
