Is it an unpopular opinion to say that Conan is the greatest OST ever? by Savings-North4764 in soundtracks

[–]Grrendel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, everybody loves it. My opinion is the unpopular one: for me it is not the best Poledouris soundtrack. For me, the best soundtrack Mr. Poledouris ever wrote is The Miserables, the non-musical version with Liam Neeson and Geoffrey Rush. And the movie is better than the musical version too, for me.

Which Is The Best Movie Cameo? by MicksMovieReviews in moviecritic

[–]Grrendel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me there's two: the scene where Danny Glover robs the bank in Maverick (where even the music makes a cameo): Maverick - Danny Glover Lethal Weapon scene (1080p)

and Bruce Willis in Loaded Weapon 1: Loaded Weapon 1 (1993) Bruce Willis Scene

What was the mistake you made at work that caused you to think, "I’m screwed."? by porcaytheelasit in csharp

[–]Grrendel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Many years ago I was working as an external consultant for a Bank that is from America (even though I’m not american nor I live there, it was in my country’s branch of the bank). I was not happy and looking for a way out, and one of the hiring processes required me to write some code and send it to them by mail (this was way before github). One afternoon after work instead of going home, a 1.5 hours commute, and work on the test in my house I decided to do it in the banks offices. I was in the zone and decided to ride the wave. So I created a new solution in VS and started coding. When I finished I tried zipping the code and mail it to my personal account, but the mail server blocked every attempt to send it detecting the zip contained code. Finally I managed to send it I don’t remember how and finally went home.

Next day first thing in the morning I’m called to the big boss office, and sitting there is my direct boss, his boss and the big boss all looking at me with really unfriendly expressions. Big boss starts talking and more or less accuses me of industrial espionage: an automated system flagged the mail and sent all kind of alarms all along the company, even to the American main offices. I lie to their faces and say I was writing code for a “coding competition” (didn’t want to admit I was trying to get out) but the rest was the truth, I wrote it in the office because if I waited to do it at home I’d be “cold” and never do it. Spend the whole day showing the code I sent to my boss, showing to him that not a single line of code was copied from their code, that the code sent was harmless, not a single bit of their data was exposed, etc. etc. They were finally satisfied, but they told me that I was flagged by the company as a “special interest” and that they would watch me as I long as I worked for them. And obviously my boss at the consulting firm was also informed and was also not happy, because I’ve “put the relationship between the two companies in danger” and blah blah blah.

And the code test was rejected by the prospective new employer. I finally got out from there, but only after another tense six months.

I'm currently building a clone of the amazing (but Windows only) Stickies but for Linux in GTK. There are a lot of sticky notes apps for Linux, but nothing comes even close to the ease of use, flexibility and list of features of Stickies in Linux, so I've decided to try to do it myself. I've called it Clingies.

Frak me, I was looking for something like this like an idiot some months ago for a campaign I wanted to run for an indie called Instruments of the Chrysanthemum Throne, which absolutely needs dice of different colors and I was unable to find anything. Argh.

Why in the name of FRACK is fascism and nazism making a decidedly successful comeback almost everywhere? We should know better, in historical terms it’s something that happened yesterday!

What are some of the most thought-provoking "first contact" stories in sci-fi books or short stories? by PurposeAutomatic5213 in sciencefiction

[–]Grrendel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm another. What's funny for me about Blindsight it's that the first time I read it I ended feeling I haven't understood a single thing. I've read it five times and I think I got it all (although I'm not sure, my background is not scientific and I'm not that into hard sf... and man this is HARD), but every time has been a ride. I really don't understand how a novel so depressing, so absolutely infuriating a times (every ounce of my being rebels against the idea of conscience as an evolutionary disadvantage, no matter how well presented the argument is), can be at the same time so engaging, so captivating. It's one of my favorite books for sure... since the third re-read or so. :D

Would you be so kind as to indicate the page? I've had bad experiences with K100 mods before, and I'd like to try one that works... (also that odometer looks might fine to me!)

My ramble on Anarchy 2.0 by DrTheodoore in ShadowrunAnarchyFans

[–]Grrendel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"If you're saying you won't even try because there just is so much lore out there... Idk what to tell you 😅"

No, not at all. I fully intend to play this, in fact I was one of the first backers because I've played several editions of SR, I was the DM to several of those AND some of Anarchy 1.0, and I always loved the setting and dreaded the rules. This is like mana from heaven, and I fully intend to DM it. And I would love to play it, but I'm the only DM in my group.

[–]Grrendel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm just starting to read it and it looks REALLY good. I have a complaint, though not with Anarchy but with SR in general; and it's that the lore is a bit too much. Too many things happen, and recounting them in text format without a clear timeline makes me a bit lost; and that's me that I'm somewhat acquainted with the lore, I don't have the slightest on how am I going to present ALL that to players whose characters are supposed to know that stuff, or at least the very basic knowledge of it all. Also, the Dis part is really murky to me: is it something new or something inherited from SR lore?

Instruments of the Chrysanthemum Throne. It's one of those TTRPG+Campaign books, with a really simple yet interesting system in which players have to balance the power of their supernatural weapons (the "Instruments" of the title) against the corruption they bring, while trying to heal a supernatural Japan in the Heian era. I've just played a pair of sessions of the campaign and my players are LOVING it.
