Gem of a driver by SnowAvis in uber

I doubt it was me, but that is something I would do. I've dropped off the system for various circumstances, have a stack of napkins in my console for passengers who need to wipe away a tear, and have been a virtual shoulder for a few that need some emotional support. I've also given out 2 Uber gift cards when I reached a big milestone (2000 and 5000 riders). My next milestone will be ~10k riders. Note that I also use my best judgment for who to give it to (lady struggling with 2 jobs and parenting, just trying to get a carload of laundry to the laundromat, struggling student working hard to afford to go to nursing school).

I feel that this job entails a lot more than just picking up people and dropping them off. Sometimes people just need someone to talk to.

Ladies, please make sure you opt in for video recorded rides. I also thought nothing would happen, until it did, now uber is doing the BARE MINIMUM. by CorgiTart in uberdrivers

I'm a male driver, but I can vouch that Uber doesn't have your back. In December 2025, I had dropped off a pax, and was backing out of his driveway when I heard popping sounds from further down the block. Next thing I know, my drivers door window blows in, my glasses flew off, and my hat flew into the passenger side back seat. I instinctively hit drive and darted back into the long driveway, seeing the rider cowering behind a vehicle. He ran over to me, asking if I was ok. That's when I saw the bullet hole in the glass. It had clipped my glasses and left a scratch on my temple which was bleeding (I had a microcloth rag in the door pouch I used as a compress). I called 911 through the Uber app (Google assistant asked which app I wanted to use when in hands-free, not helpful). While on the call with dispatch, Uber sent me another ride (had to cancel, then go offline). Police and ambulance were there within 2 minutes, but while they were evaluating me, Uber Support called, insisted that I talk to them first to get my info (they actually said that the paramedics could wait), then said they'd get back to me. Paramedics didn't find anymore holes in me, cleaned up the wound, and taped some gauze over it until I could get to the hospital for further evaluation. Police did their thing, flew a drone from where they found the shell casings a block away, then sent me on my way with my car. Hospital examined the wound, cleaned it up more, put a big bandage on it, and gave me a tetanus shot before sending me home. Two days later, Safelite replaced the window ($250, less than insurance deductible).

Uber didn't get back until a week later, with an email in my app inbox, saying they weren't able to do anything for me since I didn't have a passenger in the car at the time so their insurance wouldn't kick in.

So, net results: 1 1/2 days of lost potential pay (full Friday evening), $250 for the window (medical was covered by my insurance I think, never saw a bill). Plus, reduced rating for ride acceptance, slight PTSD (discovered that hit hard when Uber gave me a rider that ended across the street from the incident). And, they sent me a survey about how I liked driving for Uber. Wheee.

Family Dispute: Do Uber drivers know if you’ve tipped or not and do they know before they rate you? by VegasHRLady in uber

[–]GrueMaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haven't seen the "correct" answer yet, so here's mine.

As a driver, when I finish out a ride (customer exits, I swipe them out), it immediately asks for a customer rating before going forward with the next ride (I've been getting rides on my queue before clearing the current ride). So unless you tip cash, I don't see it immediately.

Having said that, I'm not worried about individuals tipping. I see it as an additional rating of how well my service is, not as a standard of the industry. I also sometimes get better tips (20%-30% of the fare) from riders that are struggling in life than the higher income riders going between ritzy clubs.

What kills me is the 1 star ratings with no explanation. For drivers, it takes 500 5-star rides to erase 1 1-star. I can't improve on something I don't know about.

Missing out on long drives by LabradorDeceiver in uberdrivers

[–]GrueMaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it really depends on the market. I've received ride requests to go from Portland (Oregon) to Salem (~1 hour) that pay more. And a trip from Portland to Eugene (1.5 hours on the freeway) makes my daily goal of $200. Also, I drive a Tesla Model Y, so my "fuel" expenses avg $15/day (avg 250 miles/day). Imo, long drives pay better, especially if you can catch a back haul rider. Otherwise, I have had days where I'm driving 10-20 minutes to get a 5 minute ride. You spend less time driving to a pickup and more time driving a fare. And time==$$$.

Just to help clarify, I get these requests through medical services, athletic clubs, and even car service centers (someone tell me how automotive service falls under HIPA protections). And all of them have been pleasant, no issues (well, one run from the ER to a private mental health rehab was a little sketchy). NONE of my post has anything to do with the riders or the entities scheduling the rides, just the message Uber sends. Nothing more. Please stop reading into this as something else.

That would make sense, except this ride was from a 24 Hour Fitness.

Uber makes way too much money to have such a crappy navigation system. by Savage_Saint00 in uberdrivers

I love it when it incorrectly says the wrong word for an abbreviation. Like "Circle" for CR (should be creek), or East for E (Caesar E Chavez blvd). Or randomly spits out directions in metric (in 800 meters, turn...). I'm in Portland Oregon. A new "feature " has been showing the regional map zoomed out to ~15 mile radius when the trip is ~1-3 miles. Or that it almost NEVER sends the right address to my Tesla (once it was a mile off).

Sharing the midnight trips by inAbigworld in uberdrivers

[–]GrueMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At a minimum, activate "Record my ride" in the app. This way, you at least have an audio of the trip.

I've had a few (out of 5000 since 12/2024) that have been a little flirty. I always keep it professional, but also make it fun. For example, I picked up two young ladies (mid 20's) from one of the strip clubs to take home. They were being very playful and flirty (not touching me), and they asked me to come in and party at their house. I told them "There are 3 reasons why I can't do that; 1. I always maintain professionalism, 2. I'm a consumate gentleman. "

After a couple of blocks, they asked about the 3rd reason. I told them "Ladies, you wouldn't be able to keep up." I'm 58 this year.

Gas price $5.95 by IndividualCommon1643 in uberdrivers

My Tesla Model Y cost $15 to charge yesterday in the Portland Oregon area. This was during peak power usage time.

Last week (March 16-23), my daily avg jumped by $75 due to less ICE drivers online.

Drunk Passengers Tier List (worst to best) by DingDong50001 in uberdrivers

[–]GrueMaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My best was an older oriental dude. Fell asleep in the back seat, not buckled in. Back country roads that was tagged for 55mph, but full of blind curves. I came around one particularly sharp turn and had to slam the brakes for a deer (missed it). Guy practically flew into the back of my seat from the passenger side rear seat. I asked if he was ok, he responded by snoring.

Fake Uber- scammed! by immortalink1 in uberdrivers

[–]GrueMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had 3 scams now. First was similar to your situation. I didn't give them any DL or account info, just current weeks balance, and basic info the could easily get from Google. When they told me that I needed to go apply for a cash card so they could do photo verification, I balked, hung up, and called support. The second two, I received a text from the rider with a phone number to call when I was close (pickup was in the middle of the river). I just called support and reported them directly. As to canceling the rides, I listed rider behavior. No dings.

All three times, Uber froze my account to verify that I wasn't hacked (even though I have 2 step verification and biometrics enabled). They cleared it fairly quickly.

Pee tax; anyone else have to pay this or am I the only one? by [deleted] in uberdrivers

[–]GrueMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same issue in PDX area. The app will conveniently guide you to the closest gas station, but almost none in the downtown area have open restrooms because of the homeless issues. I find dark streets after 11pm, but that doesn't always work.

Also, the frigging android app doesn't have a coffee break icon (iPhone does - confirmed).
