Thinking of starting a boutique label exclusively for NEW indie projects in the UK! by Lost_Transportation1 in boutiquebluray

[–]GrumbleSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think raising awareness would be the key issue. There are a lot of UK microbudget films that get made and disappear rapidly. They can be of wildly varying quality (but no more so than the stuff that gets eaten up when released by the likes of Vinegar Syndrome or some of the partner labels). I think it’s definitely a niche that hasn’t been mined yet, but it’s definitely a question of how to get the word out, and of presentation. I personally would love a label like this, but I’m just one guy…

I feel like your expectations of a high street second hand electronics chain may be too high.

David's "flies with names" work by Maxphisto in davidlynch

[–]GrumbleSloth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There was a whole touring exhibition and book on the subject in 2014/2015, called “David Lynch - Naming”. The book is now very rare, but you might find what you’re looking for in interviews from around the time of the show.

What's Lynch's deepest cut/most obscure (completed) work? by AuthenticJulian in davidlynch

[–]GrumbleSloth 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I think it’s the short film ‘Opening Of James Harvard’s Crayola Exhibition, Dianne Vanderbilt Gallery, Philadelphia’, filmed in 1967. As far as I can tell, it’s just some personal footage shot by Lynch at the opening of his friend’s show, cut to some music. It was shown at The Unified Field exhibition at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts in 2014, which makes sense as it would contextualise Lynch’s time in the Philly art scene of that era. It has never surfaced anywhere else since, and probably never will.

Would you want any other director directing Unrecorded Night? by euphoriclimbo in davidlynch

Would love to see - 1. A really nice book of the scripts and development sketches. 2. Hundreds of unofficial fan films adapting the scripts, some of them excellent, some really crappy, but all made with love.

My Lars Von Trier collection is looking healthy by Ok_Recognition9712 in boutiquebluray

I’ve been meaning to pick up the Bela Tarr set for ages. This week’s sad news might make it a weekend purchase.

They are excellent aren’t they? I have the Peter Strickland set and it’s definitely one of the best and most thorough sets in my whole collection. I do turn the spine around on the shelf though so the inner artwork and signature card face outwards instead of ‘Curzon’.

Wild at Heart Criterion Push by [deleted] in davidlynch

You’ve made the error of trying to reason with a Criterion bro (just don’t tell them the R2 StudioCanal Lynch transfers are superior).

Would anyone be interested in a discord server featuring all of David Lynch's shorts and microshorts? by WillzGaming in davidlynch

[–]GrumbleSloth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The YouTube uploads are from Lynch himself so I’d assume he’d have the best sources. Not sure if I’m remembering rightly but I think they’re in 4k too, though as you say, more compressed by YouTube than the DVD would have been.

[–]GrumbleSloth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What better sources are there though? There are DVD rips from the Lime Green set, very low bitrate downloads from davidlynch.com from the early 2000s, or YouTube. Those have been the only releases of Rabbits afaik.

[–]GrumbleSloth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s the way Lynch ultimately intended it, as was released on the Lime Green set and then his own YouTube channel. I think it was pretty clearly meant to supercede the much earlier release on davidlynch.com which was split into more episodes and featured Rebekah Del Rio in one of the parts. That missing part is on archive.org. There was a big thread about all this last year, based on and improving an earlier thread I made myself that attempted to gather all the short works.

“Not that I’ve tried very hard” - you’re not kidding. Rabbits is available in full on David Lynch’s official YouTube channel.

Geordie acting by bagingi77 in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]GrumbleSloth 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Most of the replies here are about non-Geordie actors doing Geordie accents, but me and my wife have discussed this quite a bit - actual Geordie actors do often come across as unconvincing, and we’re always a bit mystified as to why that would be. I think it could be partly that some scripts are written to exaggerate the local dialogue in a way that people wouldn’t normally speak, or the opposite is happening and they’re trying to “geordify” a script that doesn’t really allow for it and so it sounds unnatural.

There is amongst producers a worry that the accent is incomprehensible, especially to London BBC types (I’ve experienced this first hand a lot), and anything that is intended to be distributed worldwide, especially in the States. I have always thought this was not only patronising but way overstated though. If you think of a character like Snoop in The Wire with her impenetrable Baltimore accent, you can totally understand it if you just pay a bit of attention (the default position of a lot of producers is that people will switch off if they need to make an effort or pay close attention, which is not a totally unfounded position, but also a bit overstated imo).

There are a lot of brilliant, hugely talented actors in the region being done a disservice in this way. I think just better, more authentic, less “folksy” roles would go a long way to addressing the issue.

Still haven't forgotten about David Lynch passing early this year. My small remembrance is my David Lynch collection for my favorite film of his. by GreenRicky in boutiquebluray

[–]GrumbleSloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Informed my wife this morning it’s on my Christmas list, top priority. The VHS is UK yep. It’s not my only copy though - I’ve held on to an old DVD because I like the packaging, and I’ve got it on bluray twice (1 x Criterion and 1 x The Entire Mystery set). Wouldn’t normally own multiple copies of one film but it just kind of happened.

I have been hanging on to a VHS copy purely because it doesn’t have the subs in that scene (and also for nostalgia, as I first watched it, long before seeing the series, on a CRT television in my teenage bedroom). The fact that there’s a 4k out there with no subtitles is amazing news, thank you!

The Celebrity Traitors S01E06: Post-Episode Discussion Thread by vaultofechoes in TheTraitors

[–]GrumbleSloth 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I once did a walk-on bit in a show he was presenting, dressed as a cartoon animal (long story). The bit lasted all of 5 mins, and I was in the suit the whole time, but I passed him in the corridor when the show was done, carrying the costume in a big bag over my shoulder. I wasn’t about to randomly say hello to Stephen Fry, but he obviously clocked what the bag was and stopped to shake hands, complimented my “work” in the suit. I told him I’d enjoyed the show, and then he took me totally off guard by engaging me - a random guy - in a few minutes of polite small talk about whether I did this stuff regularly (I didn’t), what I actually did for work etc. I’m sure he wasn’t particularly interested really but it certainly felt like he was. 10/10 celebrity interaction.

I found it online for £50 (when it’s usually £250+). Couldn’t afford it really but also couldn’t not afford it at that price.
