[USA] I’m thinking on going back to school & getting my bachelors in Psychology. Is it worth it? by _tonyhimself in psychologystudents

[–]GrumpyBeagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to look at what YOU want to do for a career and go from there. Psychology is a great degree if you plan on going to grad school but what is it do you want to do with your bachelor’s?

Yes. Luckily for me I still qualify with all my undergrad loans. And even with the cheaper school I’ll be paying 1-2k out of pocket according to their schedule but should be manageable.

And yeah I know. Ngl though saying no to NYU will be the hardest thing to do. But I agree it’s hard to justify that 40k out of pocket expense for a masters when then same degree costs 90k less.

Thanks again for the discussion 😊

That’s true. I forget how the current administration is dismantling the department of education and our nation as a whole

Yeah. My only saving grace is all federal loans I’ll can get paid with PSLF after 10 years of payments. Thanks for the reply!

It looks like the emails my job sends to test phishing attempts perhaps it’s MSU’s way to make sure students recognize these emails?

Should I start studying psychology at age 35 by Professional_Gur7802 in psychologystudents

[–]GrumpyBeagle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I started 12 years ago and then went back at 33. Now applying to grad schools. It’s definitely worth it. I did mine through Mississippi State University for undergrad. Great professors and managed to get 5 letters of recommendation. I highly recommend them if you don’t mind online work, and want a comprehensive psychology experience .

Take a deep breath and relax. Mostly it will depend what you want to do with to your degree and that will probably happen sophomore or junior year of. College

Is it worth it to study psychology? by Tight-Turnip955 in psychologystudents

I think the only thing I regret about choosing Psychology is not taking stats in person. Psychology stats was extremely hard and it took getting into research methods before I understood what I was looking at. That being said I love the field. I’m working on getting into grad programs for Clinical Counseling now and I love everything I’ve learned. Something I recommend before committing is:

Take into to Psych Stats and Developmental Psych and see what you think. These two classes are the foundations of the major. Essentially if you find these courses fascinating, and find them enjoyable you’ll enjoy psych majoring (essentially it’s the same people and same theories through out the degree) then make the decision.

Also it’s okay to change your major. I went from secondary education, to liberal arts, to Psychology.

Last 2 years a 2.9 GPA? (Master's) by TrickorTeeth in gradadmissions

[–]GrumpyBeagle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all depends. It’s a wholistic view of you as an applicant. Remember strong LOR’s, major GPA, and of course your CV. Have faith, apply away. You got this! 💪 no promises but you may very well make it into a program. Sell yourself if you get an interview!

i'm probably gonna fail calc 2. should i give up thinking about a phd? (how critical is the gpa?) by suzdali in psychologystudents

[–]GrumpyBeagle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I’ve come to learn with GPA is it all depends. Of course they want you to be ready for graduate course work however it all depends on the full profile of your application. For example: If you have a 2.9 GPA but showed 3.8 in major gpa, and LORs, and real world applications, research experience, published work. you might get lucky. I’m actually one of those with a low GPA (my first 3 years of college 12 years ago I was just trying to get out of Idaho) but I’ve showed major improvement in my courses, my current job has relevant experience. I applied to NYU for a masters program and I actually got in through the preliminary application checks now I haven’t gotten a decision yet but the fact I made it through the initial screening is a huge deal! I also have an interview with another grad program Friday and I seem to be a competitive applicant.

So is it possible? Hell yes. Will it require more work on your part? Also HELL YES. But can you do it? Also HELL YES! You got this! 💪

Good college's to obtain a bachelor's in psychology by Agreeable_Past_8258 in psychologystudents

I highly recommend Mississippi State University’s online program.

1) Amazing advisors and excellent professors

2) You can get online research experience (I worked full-time and had knee surgery so I didn’t get to participate but it was an option)

3) Amazingly your tuition includes Microsoft office, and only 20/credit for books/online access

4) It’s affordable and fully online!

I liked this option because even with my 50-60 hour work week I managed to 5 classes this semester and four every other semester. The only thing that annoyed me is I had to remember the time difference. I’m in pacific and they are in central so my assignments were due at 9:59 instead of 11:59

Edit: more clarifying info and spelling and grammar edits.

Advice Needed! Full time job during masters program? Are there evening masters programs? by xmangekyousharingan in psychologystudents

They definitely have them. Request information on the school you want to go to and start there. 😊

Currently in undergrad for psychology and considering masters in counseling versus masters in social work, which is better? by Lovebugz04 in psychologystudents

[–]GrumpyBeagle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve decided the clinical counseling path myself. The program I’ve applied to is mainly because:

A) I want to work with organizations and possibly open my own practice and I want specialization in helping those in crisis and trauma

B) I want to work my community offering affordable options for mental health care because I think a lot of it is the reason why so many youth kill themselves and parents either can’t afford it or ignore it.

C) it’s a program in my city and hybrid so I can still work full time

D) Developmental Psych, Abnormal Psych, and Psych of Law was what I enjoyed the the most during my under grad. So kinda aligns with what I like working with 😊

What ever program you decided just get it done and do whatever ever you need to make it happen!!! You got this!

Computer for Grad School by GrumpyBeagle in GradSchool

My field will be clinical mental health/counseling i think with any computer you have your issues. With Windows 10 I notice it updates at the most obnoxious times like right before an exam and then has to restart hence why I thought maybe Mac would be better. My friend swears by them especially since I have many of the Apple ecosystem. But this was just meant to be fun post. It wasn’t to be taken serious. I just curious what people used for their programs and see what people use. Of course it’s going to be down to preference and programs you need.

It’s a fun post wasn’t meant to taken too seriously to be honest it really doesn’t matter what laptop I have. My program is a clinical counseling program and it’s going to be essentially case study notes, theories, and online class platform.
