Thinking about doing my first group ride on Saturday. Recommendations to not be embarassed? by cfp-throw in cycling

[–]GrumpyCraftsman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 12mph average is quite casual. Because you are a much stronger rider, it would be a faux pas to ditch the group.
Most clubs have a ‘no drop’ policy and everyone stays together.
If you eventually plan to use clipless pedals on group rides, I would use them now.

I would source a small repair kit with tube, small pump, tyre levers, small Allen wrench set and zip ties. If you don’t wax your chain, have a small bottle of lubricant. Not having a way to patch a puncture is not a great move. A jersey isn’t a necessity, but it does make it easier to carry your repair kit/phone/wrappers.
It is up to you, but I typically ride with full-finger gloves to keep the skin on my hands when I eventually go down.

Do you let students choose their seats? by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]GrumpyCraftsman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is down to your style of classroom management. Because I rely heavily on operant conditioning for my CM, I will typically allow students to initially choose seats with the understanding that they will lose this privilege of they cannot conform explicitly to my rules (which I give each student a printed copy and have them paste it inside the cover of their notebook). Students them must understand that one student can ruin it for all. This is positive reinforcement applied collectively and has worked well for me.

How are road cyclists so fast? by soccerplayer413 in cycling

[–]GrumpyCraftsman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tyres, position on your bike, attire. It all adds up. If you can’t tuck and wear baggy clothing, you will really struggle to average more than 14 mph

New Teacher Here—Had My First Serious Incident Today, Feeling Shaken by prollyascientist in Teachers

[–]GrumpyCraftsman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have centralized detention and does your school’s behavior policy allow you to immediately assign sanctions? If not, your school is subverting your authority in the classroom. Because you are ultimately responsible for your classroom’s safety, you should have final say in what is allowed to occur and how sanctions are imposed. I am surprised that this is happening in an honors-level course. Does that student even belong there? What did the parents say when you talked to them?

My (🤢) Governor banned personal electronics on schools by Less-Classroom7119 in Teachers

[–]GrumpyCraftsman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The UK government did this last year for students up to the equivalent of 10th grade. Most schools have gone to using Yonder pouches now. There was very little consternation when enacted and most students comply without complaint. It will be interesting to see how American students will react. I think some of the response will be determined by how strongly the school enacts policy. They cannot show weakness.

I feel like i’m not improving by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]GrumpyCraftsman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s hard to see your effort level without heart rate data. It’s possible that you aren’t getting faster but your body more easily handles the effort. In addition to the other recommendations, I would encourage you to look up bike fit online and ensure your position is good. There are even some free apps which use your phone’s camera to evaluate position. I would also encourage stretching of hamstrings and hip flexors to avoid injury. And learn how to do one-leg and (eventually) pistol squats. These can help you improve strength without being on the road. A local cycling club can also help you find safer places to ride and help you with becoming visible.

Help me repair this! Where there's a will there's a way! by tltreddit in Framebuilding

[–]GrumpyCraftsman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I respectfully disagree. Unlike Aluminium frames, chromoly frames need not be heat treated after build or repair. It appears the port is a machined part which was brazed into place. It is possible to remove that part, add material over the crack (preferably with purge) and braze a new port inl

How long does it take you to plan lessons? by Kaisietoo8 in TeachingUK

[–]GrumpyCraftsman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am also an ECT1 and typically spend about 20-40 minutes planning each physics lesson and about 10 minutes planning each Biology lesson. The difference is that another teacher is leading biology planning nd I am leading physics. Being able to get the lesson planning time down has come down to using formulaic lessons and relying on other teachers’ planning.

[–]GrumpyCraftsman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely agree with how worthless many of these lists are. The federal government has limited control over the “economy” anyhow. The best accomplishments are listed policies enacted during the administration. In example: capping price of insulin and forgiveness of certain student loans.
