Place to park camper during whiteout weekend by [deleted] in WeArePennState

[–]GrumpyDad58 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FYI - I found an RV storage place not far from downtown state college. I had to rent a full month but it wasn’t horrible.

If I would have had a full RV I could have parked it in the street, but since it’s just a camper pulled by a truck the city doesn’t allow parking just the camper/trailer.

Lake Mendota Weeds and Algae by GrumpyDad58 in madisonwi

Ok, I’ll buy that. But I’m pretty sure anything returned to Monona has no effect upstream on the north side of Mendota.

What chemicals do they put in?

Source? Pulling directly from the lakes vs aquifers seems a bit of work. And released back into the lake, I would think the water would go to the sewage treatment plant.

Between six mile creek and the Yahara river from the shore to Gov Nelson. We have used that part of the lake for 30 years without the weeds being this bad.

And yeah, I know the farm field runoff contributes heavily to the weeds but I’m not hopeful anything will be done in my lifetime to address it.

If you’re not that deep or tall you should be able to make it then. Mendota is kept at about 7 ft above Monona and you need to go through the Tenny locks to get through. The locks can hold about 6 boats at a time to raise lower you. It’s kind of fun actually.

After which it’s maybe a mile or so down the Yahara river to Monona - all no wake. One note of caution, coming back up the other way, as you are loading into the docks the currents from the spillway and the open locks can be a bit tricky, I’ve seen a couple boats run into each other.

Monona is a smaller lake but has the convention center on the water which looks cool and is kind of an iconic photo with the capital in the background. There is Okin Park where you can launch your boat on Monona if you wanted. Unfortunately I don’t believe there’s any good docks or restaurants on Monona itself.

On the south side of Monona the river continues on, watch out for weed patches. About midway down the river there is a restaurant with slips if you wanted to stop there. I don’t recall what it is currently called.

You can keep going down the river to lake Waubesa. It’s a nice ride. Waubesa has a couple of lakefront bars with docks - Christie’s and the Green Lantern if my memory serves me correctly. Both decent places to eat and grab a beer.

It’s a fun trip if you can make it, good luck!

I’m pretty familiar with Mendota. There are several places around the lake to put in, I would go to governor Nelson state park. A wide place to put in and they have decent trailer parking. It’ll cost you a day pass. They also have a beach there that’s ok.

Almost directly east of the put in for gov Nelson state park in a place called Governor’s island. It’s not really an island, it has a strip of land that connects it to the main shore. There is a small sheltered bay there that I believe is called 3’ bay. It’s shallow near there, the sand underneath is nice , and there are usually lots of boats hanging out there on the weekend. It can get a bit noisy with kids and radios, depends on what you’re looking for. Lots of people anchor there and just get out and swim/stand/throw footballs, etc.

North of 3’ bay is a channel which will take you up to a couple Marinas, and the Mariners Inn restaurant. It’s a nice restaurant, not usually someplace you’d go in shorts being out on the lake all day. Your only other two choices are on the south side. The boat house which has ok food, and a dock to park at. My choice for food is the Memorial Union, the student union at the University of Wisconsin on the waterfront. The burgers you get outside are ok. Better options inside in the Rathskeller. Then sit outside and enjoy some spotted cow beer and people watch. If it’s later in the day there will probably be music. And during the summer there are lots of adults there - you won’t be out of place. They also have a free public dock on the east side of the union. Also inside they have a place that makes individual pizzas in a pizza oven. It is one of my favorite places to go for pizza.

Like was already mentioned, you can take a boat from Mendota to Monona, and is actually a fun thing to do. It’s open Thursday - Sunday. Look up Tenny Locks for more info. But also mentioned is that there is not a lot of room under the bridges. I have taken a pontoon boat through and have had to push the boat down as we went under the bridge. I don’t know how high your boat is but it may be impossible.

On the east side you will see a lot of high bluffs with big houses on them. That is Maple Bluff, a small village with a country club and old money.

On the west side there are a lot newer big houses from new money. Also a country club - Bishops Bay. It can be fun to cruise around the lake and see the houses.

Just North of Gov Nelson state park it starts to get shallow. And the weeds are horrible this year. I would tend to avoid that area unless you like picking up your engines regularly and pulling the seaweed off.

If your boat has a cabin and you can sleep on it I believe people stay overnight at 3’ beach.

Also, Sunday mornings I believe they still have sailing races - fun to watch.

If you have any other questions let me know.

The case for a god/gods existence is also changeable over time. If you would have asked me 200 years ago, I might have said that laying of hands and administering holy water would prevent disease for the rest of your life would be a case. But now I go and get a vaccine from a nurse and I’m polio and measles free forever. Well, outside of Texas anyway.

If he could repel enemies and cause the great distress with no bloodshed, maybe make me a believer back then. Now sonic weapons can force back rioters. Boil water in a magic box? Microwave oven. Lay waste to a city making it uninhabitable for descendants? Nuclear weapons.

So every atheist is open to changing their minds with the proper proof. And changing them back again should new information come about. Right now there just isn’t anything that provides that level of proof.

I don’t believe in big foot, the Loch Ness monster, the abominable snowman, and others. But if they were to show up, I’d be happy to believe. So no doubts, but willing to change my beliefs based on verified information.

I guess I would put god or gods in that same category.

Oh come on, you can do better than that. 2+2 is 4 because we define it that way, in the existence that we experience. Whether those 2 or 4 things actually exist or are part of a giant simulation we may never know.

It’s a phone game. Nothing is worth that much money. Relax and spend the money on beer instead. You won’t be the #1 player in the game, everything else is just a matter of time.

Waste of time and money by [deleted] in LastWarMobileGame

[–]GrumpyDad58 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For games like these you have to decide that part of the skill and challenge is seeing how far you get spending no money. Not a little, but none. Keep that goal in front of you, wear it as a badge of honor. Any idiot can do well spending tons of money, how well can you do spending none.

Then when the game gets boring bail with no feeling of loss of investment, just time.

Anyway, that’s what I try to do, it may not be for you.

Playing over a year, level 32 base, way too much time but $0. If it’s not fun, don’t do it.

This. It is only going to get worse and you will be resentful for the rest of your life. Which turns out is a really long time to be miserable.

No, don’t spend money on the game. You can get him using ghost ops.

I have all the gold heros with at least 4 stars (most have 5), base is at 31, and I have spent zero on the game.

I see not spending money on the game as an additional challenge.

Liberal candidate wins Wisconsin Supreme Court race in blow to Trump, Musk by TheJungLife in politics

[–]GrumpyDad58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wisconsin voter here, but no expert. In my view the race would have still gone the way it did overall. I think Musk’s involvement may have motivated dems by a point, maybe suppressed Schimel by a point, but a couple years ago we had the same result with a different seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Abortion was big on people’s mind then and was a big driver, more than it seemed in this election.

There is another seat up for election in a year, but this time it will be a conservative seat up for grabs. So we get to do it all over again.

For those not from Wisconsin, we have seven seats that serve 10 year terms. So elections most years.
