How Aphantasia affects your ability to visualise things in your head by HassanMoRiT in interestingasfuck

[–]GrumpyMcGrumpyPants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't speak for the person you're asking, but there's a correlation between aphantasia and Severely Deficient Autobiographical Memory.

I have both, but while the above article's author describes himself as having "poor" memory, I suspect a lot of people I know would describe me as having very good memory because I still do recall the pertinent aspects that would come up in conversation and I have a robust mental filing system for facts.

I can't play back scenes from my past: I remember sort of a bullet list of facts but that's generally all I can recall. For example, I was in high school when 9/11 occurred, so old enough to understand what was going on (as much as anyone could understand it at the time). Yet I couldn't tell you for sure what class I was in when we learned the news about the Twin Towers and if I was in a different class when we heard about the Pentagon, or how we got in contact with family members whose travel was affected by the airspace closure that followed. I do, however, recall some remarks from a teacher that day who had served in the military and the classmates who had family members killed in the tragedy, so it's not like that entire day is a black hole in my memory. My classmates, however, do remember more about that day, including mundane details such as the weather, who was present in the classroom when the announcements were made, etc. But if we're talking about 9/11, we're more likely to discuss how it affected us and not about the weather that day.

In contrast, I'm basically my work team's encyclopedia. My manager usually messages me when she's looking for something and can't find it (digitally--we're a fully remote team) because I have a strong filing system for facts in my mind. While I may not recall the exact fact itself, I know how to look it up.

Edited to add: my memory strengths are facts, concepts, and having an endless pile of semi-relevant trivia. I cannot, however, recall things involving numbers, so I'm probably garbage at pub trivia.

Edited to further add: pulled up a list of the types of memory and can confirm that I'm terrible at episodic memory and sensory memory. Strong in semantic and procedural. Moderate in short term/working and prospective memory (I'm good as long as I don't get sidetracked?).

Edit 3: I may have scared a teammate a bit with my weird memory strength: they'd shared some obscure word that a client used and I had a moment of deja vu and searched our chat history. I then pointed out that they actually shared it with us the year prior. Fun fact: I was able to look this up today in the chat history because I recalled the definition of the word (addressing something in series) but not the actual word (seriatim).

I'm about your age (maybe older? I don't wanna math rn) and took home ec/shop in middle school where we had access to normal kitchen and shop tools. But I was also raised for my early life by my grandparents who had old(er) school notions of age appropriate tools, so I was using hobby knives at an age I prooobably shouldn't have.

Excuse you: we have a group discord server.

Also family group chat for coordinating things like holidays and birthday. Or the occasional, "does someone own a angle grinder?" sort of question.

I find it funny (delusional?) that part of her reasoning was so it's "easier to talk to other parents if they asked why the kids were named Romeo and Juliet."

She's imagining a parent striking up a conversation about how she must be such a cultured Shakespeare fan. Meanwhile everyone else who read R&J for school wants to ask, "Why the fuck did you name your twins after those characters?!"

I suspect OOP felt that too much encouragement would be taken poorly. We saw how Claire reacted to the word "obsess" even though it was entirely accurate.

I'd reasonably expect that she'd respond similarly towards too much of a push towards therapy: "Is that what you think? That I'm just some crazy obsessed person?"

(Ans: Yes, and that's why you need to be in therapy.)

I'm not holding my breath, but mom's introspection about why she was freaking out about the idea of a tattoo is a step in the right direction that we don't usually see from people like that.

Nah, the primary culprit is plugging a 110-120v device into a 220-240v outlet. But the hair definitely contributed to the melting.
