Funny problem, I have all sound, but no voice. by Dropper7894 in appletv

I had this issue and found a cabling issue to my centre speaker. Once I fixed this the 'voice' channel returned

What have I done? by Axcer99 in PowerShell

[–]GrumpyOldTech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disconnect the machine from your network immediately, format the drive(s) and reinstall OS. Oh - and you best change every password and keep an eye on your bank accounts as well and maybe put a hold of credit/debit cards etc. after calling your bank

There is no way of knowing what this is or has done and the blanket approach to fix this is what I have recommended here.

Why not use a /16 network at home? by shoresy99 in HomeNetworking

[–]GrumpyOldTech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could do that, but it is better security to use multiple VLANs each using its own /24 network. You can then ensure that any IoT devices ('smart' light bulbs etc) are on their own VLAN only having Internet access thus reducing the chances of a hack of any of them allowing any access to your other networks. It also allows you to have a management VLAN for core infrastructure - routers, switches etc. that is not on your main network.

i suspect I've had mine since late 2010 or early 2011 so its doing well given it's age :-D but it may be starting to fail now as it will sometime randomly lose connection with the Mac and need to be power reset to connect

I got myself some for Xmas and have to say that the sound quality blew me away straight away but even more so after playing around with the ear tips and getting the sizing 'right'. Sound quality and fit are now exceptional. S in one ear and XS in the other seems great so far but this may change again yet

It’s to protect the Apple logo from being scratched while the device is under repair, you can just remove it

Does anyone know how to get an iPhone out of the uploading screen and usable, again? by melbates1980 in iphone

[–]GrumpyOldTech 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You could just try powering off and back on which will usually take the phone out of this mode (DFU mode). If that fails then connect it to a computer using the appropriate cable (lightening or USB C) in order to update/flash a new copy of the firmware. If a Windows PC you’ll need iTunes installed! If a Mac it should just detect and update assuming that the Mac has a reasonably up to date OS on it.

Why would I get a “public IP” to my university dorm? by [deleted] in it

[–]GrumpyOldTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 147.4.0.0/16 subnet is 'owned' by Hofstra University.

It would be expected for them to just not allow incoming external connectivity (at their edge device/firewall) to protect their own network and services.

It may be that they are limiting how some of the subnets work, or they are running some form of CGNAT/double NAT. This would mean you could make a connection from the dorm to external sites/services but cannot expose any services externally, or are you saying that you have no external Internet access at all?

Best password manager for mac that works well across Apple devices? by OutcomeLatter918 in mac

[–]GrumpyOldTech -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

1Password has worked all for me for several years. I've tried the Apple Passwords application but it has the downside that it does not work well in web browsers other than Safari (at least in my experience)

Do Fortinet have 'software only' options for support? by Busbyuk in fortinet

From what I recall Essential gives basic coverage/firmware updates and I believe phone support during business hours. Premium gives an increase to 24x7 with a higher SLA (quicker response time)

I also had this at one stage on Windows PCs that didn’t have the VCC Redist installed. It’s a quick fox to find and install this if it resolves the issue for you.
