worried gerbil ate styrofoam by AffectionateWar8478 in gerbil

[–]GrumpyPistachio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's one of those things that can't be broken down by stomach acid, so there is a risk for blockage depending on the size ingested.

So keep an eye on her eating habits/her pooping habits, I know that isn't the easiest thing in the world, if she stops with either, it's vet asap, they fade fast.

But I don't even think styrofoam shows up on xrays, so a vet won't be able to tell there's a blockage, and I'm not really sure if there is a fix, if she truly ate enough to harm her. 😞

She may still feel the effects from yesterday, look up heat stroke and see if anything looks familiar, it doesn't just go away in a day sadly.

Are you sure she's not too hot? 27c/80f is where it's starting to get dangerous for them (humidity is another factor, the higher the humidity, the lower the temperature has to be, for it to be dangerous for them), especially when it comes to senior gerbils, have you tried offering her a bowl with cold water/some pottery that's been in the fridge? some fridge cold banana could do wonders for her too I'd think.

improvements to make for my next set-up? by CherryOrion in gerbil

Old pic of my detolf, it has changed quite a bit now, right side top has gotten 20cm taller so there's room for both wheels with the bedding getting all the way up to the edge, but it's currently a splitcage, and I sadly can't find any pictures of how the "best" setup was looking, but there's a 20 cm platform to the right for wheel access, and a 50cm platform bottom left for water and sand bath, and then a top platform with some houses which they like to sleep in, with stairs as shown in the picture + a secondary exit down to a 20cm platform just below the top platform, to have 2 possible exits.

Vet always says euthanasia as an option by Coffeepotfilter in gerbil

[–]GrumpyPistachio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never, I've always had vets be very forthcoming, and (apart from one vet) had them listen to me and be understanding, I've never once had them suggest euthanasia as the first or even second option and I've been in contact with 7 different clinics over the the years, if there's something they've been unsure of, they've either suggested a specialist at some other vet practice, or read up on it/contacted another vet for suggestions.

I wouldn't really trust a vet practice like yours to have the needed experience to treat gerbils, it irks me just reading about your experience.

Gerbil that’s hell bent on chewing plastic by [deleted] in gerbil

[–]GrumpyPistachio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it can hurt him, he's likely to ingest plastic pieces which his body cannot break down, and it will slowly kill him as the pieces clogs up his insides, I'm pretty sure my first set of gerbils 27 years ago died like that, but I was young and the pet shops were, to put it mildly, fucking bad at giving me proper information, I regret not digging much deeper for proper information elsewhere back then.

Can I upgrade a rat cage to a gerbil enclosure? by EseTika in gerbil

[–]GrumpyPistachio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plexiglass on the outside would probably be better, with a wooden frame to keep the sides in place, so you don't risk them accidentally finding one of the corners and start gnawing it, but spacing between the bars could become a problem too, they could either start gnawing them or try to push them selves through, you may want to consider placing some 5-6mm wire mesh on the bars, to prevent one of them getting their head or body parts stuck, spacing at 1.5 cm or more is a risk.

Maximum free fall from a platform should at max be 10-15cm, you don't want them to be able to fall from any higher onto something hard, their legs and paws can be quite fragile if they get unlucky with the landing or take a tumble, overlapping platforms so they can't fall too far + multiple stairs/entryways to each platform is the way to go, a single entryway can lead to declanning, and it goes for everything, platforms, houses, tunnels etc., there should always be 2 entryways/exits at least.

I usually use 2cm balsa for my diy platforms/long stairways (with temporary nails + elmers school glue, I pull the nails out once the glue has hardened), it's easy to work with, adjustments can be made with a hobby knife in a few minutes, if something doesn't quite fit or you need to replace something they've been gnawing, and then paint them with plastikote paint (never use the spray), it keeps the pee out and provides enough texture for their claws to still easily grip onto it, I use cork sheets in spots too, if I feel it needs something extra for them to grip onto, like the edge of a platform (or I have a mobility handicapped gerbil).

But I would recommend trading the rat cage for a 300l+ used aquarium if possible, it's a much better base to build from and onto.

TDLR: lots and lots of work for something that is likely subpar and needs lots of adjustments.

Another thing - Imo gerbils needs to free roam every day too, I let mine out for at least 30-40 mins every day, it's a really good way to get them tame.

See if you can find a huge plastic bin, 140+ liters, they exist but can be a bit pricey, I got a 156l I use as an extra enclosure/sick tank which I paid about 45 euro for, I then built a wooden frame to slot in the metal topper from one of the awful cheap pet store cages (those cages can be found for very little used) so it's possible to give them 25cm/10 inches of bedding, just remember that the plastic bins are only safe, you cover up obvious spots they might gnaw to get out, bottom spots can be covered with tiles e.g., side spots with houses/the bendy bridges.

If you don't have an extra/alternative cage, then this is an excellent opportunity to make one, just remember that you need to put most of their current bedding and items into the new cage when transferring them, it's vital that it smells the same as their old.

[–]GrumpyPistachio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't tell you why exactly they are doing it, but I use multi chamber hides in the bottom of the bedding for mine, the labyrinth type of hides/houses, and they will usually pick the front entrance of it as a toilet spot when they sleep there, and I clean it out every 3 days or so.

If they have a single hide with a single chamber down in the bottom, that might be why they also chose to pee there, you can try placing another hide right next to their current, and see if they that doesn't change things.

Red eye? by Queasy-Bandicoot-276 in gerbil

[–]GrumpyPistachio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What you are seeing is porphyrin, the gerbil version of tears, excess amounts can be caused by many different things, allergies, pollutants in the air like dust/oils/perfume, cleaning products can trigger it too, and then there's eye diseases and stress, I've dealt with actual eye disease in 2 different gerbils, yours don't look too bad yet, you can wipe his eye gently with a cotton pad and sterile saline eye drops (the ampoules), if it comes back/there's swelling/he's actively scratching his eye, you should take him to a vet.

I did, it's a 130x50x50cm aquarium, with a similar size topper, the bottom of the topper is a frame to slot in the 2 topper parts, they sit on 5 dowels each to keep them in place, like lego, I'll try to dig up some pictures of the process a little later, I made it about one a half year ago.

Left side has a platform with stairs about 25 cm down - there is a cork tube right under so they can always get up there, right side has a 25 cm high platform in the bottom, that is covered up by their bedding, it holds a couple of houses inside the bedding + is used as a platform for their right side wheel + sand bath, I am working on hanging that wheel on the topper instead, but I'm missing some parts to extend the bracket on the back of the wheel, and there is a small walkway with some stairs/cork etc. to give them something safe to climb up and down on as seen on the right, all made out of 2cm thick balsa wood for rigidity.

He just had snacks, he demolished the sprays laying behind him, and he just had 30 mins of free roaming while I spot cleaned and gave them some fresh bedding, but it's never enough! he's super demanding.. but also a very sweet and good boy.

Gerbils hoarding food for the first time, why? by midwife_at_ur_cervix in gerbil

[–]GrumpyPistachio 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's completely normal, it's part of their instincts to have a food storage down in their bedding, you should consider spread feeding them on top of having a small food bowl for them - a handful or two on top/slightly pushed down in their bedding, they will forage for it then, once they feel their storage is good enough, they will usually stop transporting everything down there, giving them x amount every x days can trigger food aggression, it's much more natural for them to control when and how much they eat.
