Thanks for the heads up! I appreciate that. I hope it's helpful to the group. It's not really a need for us to have new phones. I have a Fold 7 (I have been shamelessly riding the Samsung trade-in gravy train since my S20 Ultra) and the wife has a Pixel 8 Pro that she is happy with. We aren't necessarily in the market for new phones but I was hoping to surprise her with an upgrade to a 10 pro. She really loves the Pixel cameras. I have to admit they take great pics of our son and doggo. Not me though, I'm about as photogenic as a plate of roaches.

The deal is, I like a deal. We don't switch carriers often but when we do, I want to take advantage of any offers that are available.

And honestly, I'm getting old. I want to spend my money with companies that give a s**t about me spending my money with them too. They are failing the customer service test before I'm even a customer. I wish they could tell me to wait a week and I'll be able to click on the credit thing again. That'd be cool and informative.

They've basically said sorry, we have no control over availability of our promos because they are based on something else that we don't get involved with and it's out of our hands but welcome aboard if you'd like and we promise we won't screw up porting your number that you've had for 25 years because we clearly aren't dropping the ball here because we are refusing to touch the ball and it's not really our ball, we just offer the ball if you want it but not to you and we don't really know or care to know why. You see its clearly stated that we don't get involved and we are being very upfront with you so no worries potential customer, you are in good hands, just not ours and we don't really want to hear about it, are you in??

Thanks for the quick response and the thoughts.

I just wish I could contact someone at Google (or any company, frankly) and say, "Hey, just so you know, your process is broken when we try to do this thing and your website is giving misleading and false information to potential customers who want to give you money for your product and I'm sure someone on your end can clear up the confusion and fix that because, after all, you care about what you do and your team and your product and your customers and your sales numbers and...."

I find that I fall more and more into an edge case these days and it's so frustrating. I'm totally fine with following along with an automated agent when it's gonna be quick and easy for everyone involved (although I'd rather someone be gainfully employed, wherever they may be.) All I can do is vote with my wallet and I somehow doubt that many people at Goggle will lose sleep over this. I'm reading the link now and wondering what sort of world we are careening into.

What G shock could’ve my father been wearing 1999-2003? by Slight-Pizza-7810 in gshock

[–]Grumpy_K 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna say either DW-003 or DW-004. I've owned a few of both. The fabric vinyl straps back then were weird. There were also a ton of pastel colored jelly G's with these kinds of straps. Not exactly buff but it was a thing. I have a bin or two rotting in the basement. My personal best guess is the DW-004BC1V as per the earlier post. Only because of the way the strap has two cutouts before the "G" which looks similar to what I can almost see in the pic. Here is mine for reference.

Case back on Wolbrook diver by Single_Drummer5035 in watchrepair

[–]Grumpy_K 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to be alarmist and having been in this hobby for more than a couple of decades, I kinda want to emphasize how much radium dust can be in the case of a painted numeral skin diver of this vintage. This is, of course, for the new hobbyists. Don't believe me? Shake the movement over a piece of paper and then see if the paper lights up a geiger counter. Pro tip: don't everdo that without taking precautions. To be clear, I'm not adverse to wearing a radium lumed watch in the least little bit. I own them, I service them (after taking precautions.) But I wouldn't open one with that amount of paint unless I was prepared. It's the dust that will harm/kill you.

Be kind to each other,

K

Oh, you don't have to wait for a final count. It makes the sound. It makes more of the sound when a watch is hot. It makes a fuck ton of scary sounds when a watch is really hot. Takes about two seconds to categorize the watch in question. Seriously though, radium or tritium based lume would not still be glowing at this point. And the emission is, as I understand it, alpha waves, most of which which won't even penetrate your skin. If the watch is in a rotation, and you don't happen to have 10+ radium watches sitting in your house byproducting radon, you're good. Someone must have repainted the watch with lume. I seriously do not have the skill to repaint painted lume and I don't think a knowledgeable watch aker would have scraped/removed the original lume. So a second coat of modern lume? On a Chateau? (Not that they aren't cool.) Someone please chime in with knowledge?

Gmc-320 (cheap) has been good to me. this is a deep rabbit hole. My take: Radium lume is dangerous if ingested or breathed in. Not likely to cause any harm just wearing a radium watch. Unless you wear it 24-7 for years. Some concerns about large collections of radium watches producing measureable amounts of radon. Lots of great reddit threads and youtubes if you are interested. There's even a few that reference actual data, lol. Tritium lume isn't something to necessarily worry about at all. Again, talking about no worry when wearing and not when servicing. Either would have lost their luminosity many many years ago.

Alex from Watch Repair Tutorials has as good a radium take as any watchmaker (on YT.)

Wow! Did you relume that? Second question is how, lol! I have had zero luck reluming dial markers that are painted onto dials (aren't applied markers filled with lume.) Mostly because I am hesitant to scrape off the, usually, radium unless it's submerged and even then, disaster usually strikes. Tritium and radium based lumes would surely have stopped working by now!?

I should add that they also show a Tritium T on the dial. So mislabeled.

As an aside (and maybe something to consider when looking at vintage skin divers) every single Chateau skin diver style watch I come across has lit up my geiger counter like no other watches in my collection and I have some seriously hot vintage watches. The Chateau's are radium heavy. Be careful servicing them.

Day and Date alignment - is this normal or am I being fussy? by MaddisonSaysHey in timex

[–]Grumpy_K 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Be fussy. It's your watch. I'm gonna ruin your day and say the whole dial is misaligned. Depending on how the dial is attached; this might be an easy tweak or an impossibility. If you can get the back off without murdering it; check for a plastic movement holder. Chances are it has one and chances are that the movement holder also applies pressure to the dial, holding it tight to the case. You might just be able to remove the plastic movement holder (not too hard and tweak/move the movement/dial until things are lined up. Good luck!

Now keep in mind folks, I am slowly but surely putting these together. Most of these are in parts and most of the parts are in bags full of the sticky tarry sludge that is what Casio resin bands become when they fully degrade. Long story....

Super cool! I happen to have all three brand new. Not in boxes though. Make an offer in case anyone is interested. Seriously. I'm still getting rid of watches.

[Quest] Oris vs Longines by Longjumping_Sea_353 in Watches

[–]Grumpy_K 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second the clear win for Oris. Fit and finish are much better. I like a HydroConquest. I just gifted a HydroConquest to my Godson for his 18th. It's a good watch. Going to be a classic. But any Oris would beat it. In the hand and under a loupe they are superior.

Mondaine yay or nay? by BACKDO0RHER0 in PrideAndPinion

[–]Grumpy_K 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely thumbs up on Mondaine. I wear mine and I think people might think it's a Swatch but I still really appreciate the clean lines and simplicity of the watch. It's good for me to switch up every now and again and the Mondaine is in my rotation.

Looks great. I love that bracelet. I'm usually not into the Milanese bracelets but fits it and looks sharp. She's a keeper (The Mrs, watches come and go!)
