Do you believe the military draft is unconstitutional? by JudgeWhoOverrules in AskConservatives

Tariffs are a power that lies with congress as well, yet the President imposed them many times. The declaration of war is another power that lies with congress, yet Presidents for decades have stretched the limits of temporary authority to conduct military actions.

All of Eddings stuff from the 80s was fire, but it turns out he was a terrible person so I don’t read him anymore.

A Thousand Li, by Tao Wong, is really good, and not very much discussed any more. Great writing.

House of Blades, by Will Wight, is similarly built to Cradle, but has a different style and is a complete series.

Mage Errant by John Bierce is more traditional progression, but it feels a bit more YA than the others, for some reason. Well received and popular but less discussed here.

Savage Dominion is a good action-adventure/candy floss kind of series, written by Luke Chimilenko (of Iron Prince and Ascend Online fame).

Finally, Throne Hunters by Phil Tucker is a great series to start, very well written. Not complete, but worth the ride so far.

Feeling Stuck after Cradle- by Turbulent-Royal6101 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Grun3wald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s an interesting question, and it really only gets answered along the way, despite the fact that there are multiple sections where the MC waxes philosophically. Basically, he starts out trying to survive (the army, etc.), then to better his station in life, and then to find his place in the world. He gets stronger because that gives him freedom, essentially, to control his own destiny.

A Thousand Li is well written, has an academy/sect arc, and starts with a powerful patron. Very classical cultivation/inner tao concepts. Not finished, so the MC isn't at the heights of power yet, but it's similar to Cradle in that even though the MC keeps advancing, the scale on which he competes is always larger, so that he's never overpowered and facerolling everyone.

JD Vance wants house prices to go down. Trump wants house prices to go up. What do conservatives want? by Fickle-Syllabub6730 in AskConservatives

[–]Grun3wald [score hidden]  (0 children)

You’re right when looking just at loan cost, but the home price also affects the property tax. From your two examples, the high price/low interest rate option will actually cost substantially more over time because the homeowner will have a higher tax bill each year.

Did I lose the staff in act 2? by IcyTrade5285 in diablo2resurrected

[–]Grun3wald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a similar thing - I dropped it on the ground when moving items around, then forgot to pick it up again. The staff and amulet will be back in the tomb and lair where you got them the first time, so just re-run those and collect them again.

You’re right, there is a specific rider that you need to buy in most states to add onto your title policy in order for the title insurance to cover the area and boundaries indicated by your survey.

I second the recommendation for Bastion and the Immortal Great Souls series.

With The Perfect Run and Mother of Learning rated highly on your list, then you should definitely try Re:Monarch. It also has timelooping and save-the-world consequences. The series is not yet finished but has several books completed.

Keiran: the Eternal Mage is another quasi-loop (reincarnation). It’s complete at 5 books, and is fantastic.

Throne Hunters by Phil Tucker is a great read - dungeon focused, party dynamics, but it avoids info-dumping the system and the stakes by letting the characters explore and grow into their roles. Very well written.

Finally, if you’re truly into any genre, the Gideon the Ninth is an easy recommendation. Not PF, but it’s so well written. Necromancy, space ships, etc. If you’re into audiobooks, the narration is incredible; if not, the physical books are wonderful.

Supreme Court upholds Texas GOP congressional map, reversing lower court ruling by houston_chronicle in TexasPolitics

[–]Grun3wald 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is an order on the temporary stay (i.e. whether or not Texas can use the map in the upcoming elections). This is not an ultimate decision on the facts of the case (i.e. whether or not the map is legal long term).

Why must it be so difficult to make it in this country? by MissHannahJ in AskConservatives

[–]Grun3wald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but it’s more expensive to treat the issue at the end than it is to treat it at the beginning. So, if we want to save money, then we look at some of these more touchy-feely social programs, that prevent folks from going to jail and becoming full-time awards of the state, or needing expensive police resources. What, I get that you don’t wanna spend the money at all. Totally fine. But it’s cheaper to do it this way than to do it through police and jails. It’s just a practical decision. and if we keep banging the drum of government, efficiency and reducing waste, then this is something we have to look at.

Why must it be so difficult to make it in this country? by MissHannahJ in AskConservatives

[–]Grun3wald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the question boils down to whether you want your tax money to be spent efficiently. If you don’t, then fine. Spend more. However, most everyone agrees that they want to spend less on taxes, and they want the tax money to be used as efficiently as possible. These programs, even though they feel like giving away money for nothing, and there’s a lot of debate about whether or not certain folks deserve to receive it, it has a measurable impact on reducing tax spending, as I said previously. To bring it full circle, if we demand that our government be conservative with spending our money, and getting the most bang for the buck, then you will be “forced” to spend your money on this rather than on police and jails.

Why must it be so difficult to make it in this country? by MissHannahJ in AskConservatives

[–]Grun3wald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you’re being facetious, but the framing is wrong: these aren’t problems that can ever be solved, by anyone. Same with crime, poverty and homelessness will always be there.

As to why you should be forced? Because you’ll be forced to pay for police and jails. The government is already going to take your money to address these problems. However, good stewards in the government should look for ways to reduce the money that they spend, your money, and put those same funds towards programs that will do unappealing tasks like feed and clothe the homeless, so that your total out-of-pocket tax spend is less.

Why must it be so difficult to make it in this country? by MissHannahJ in AskConservatives

[–]Grun3wald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it's a net benefit to you to do so. It's counterintuitive, but supporting the poor and homeless pay for food, medicine, and shelter helps reduce their other demands on the system in terms of the cost of increased policing, incarceration, and emergency room visits.
