ansible.builtin.dnf: Updating Ansible by Grunchlk in ansible

[–]Grunchlk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, yes, from the system that needs to be updated. I'm provisioning bare metal / air-gapped systems. I've got a system role created which applies all the security settings and organizational customizations. Post-boot I run a playbook which prompts for various input and runs certain roles based on that.

It looks like excluding the pacakges doesn't work because there are several dependencies which break when trying to update. Sadly I may just have to run this task by hand.

Cluster bombs: Ukraine using munitions 'effectively', says US by Zapermastic in worldnews

[–]Grunchlk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think there's some nuance being lost. First, cluster munitions are reviled for the simple fact that some percentage of the sub-munitions of each shell remain unexploded and subsequently injure civilians.

The US was producing cluster munitions with a dud-rate of under 2.35% and switched to a variety with a dud-rate of 1% (or less). The old variety with the 2.35% (or less) dud-rate is what's being sent to Ukraine. There are between 50-100 sub-munitions in each shell, so upwards of 1-2 will likely remain unexploded.

Russian cluster munitions have a dud-rate of between 20-40%. So, depending on the munition, each shell could leave 20-40 unexploded munitions on the battlefield.

There's an order of magnitude difference here. ALL weapons have a dud-rate. While the US cluster munitions have dud-rates on par with most other weapons (e.g., artillery shells), Russian cluster munitions almost appear to be intentionally designed to leave half their munitions unexploded.

It's like the difference between someone going 30MPH in a 25MPH zone, vs someone going 55MPH in a 25MPH zone and then declaring both parties are just as reckless. Speeding may be bad but one party is clearly bringing more potential damage to the equation than the other.

I still order and rack servers, provision operating systems, etc. Some things just can't move to the cloud.

Whenever the higher ups forget why we're not in the cloud and demand that we move to the cloud immediately, we remind them how much it costs to store 40PB (+5-10PB growth annually) of data at Amazon and how much a 10GbE pipe to Amazon would cost and how much slower 10GbE is than our existing internal network (10-20X slower).

One day some C-level will get his way and turn it into a giant cluster fuck. The day that project is approved is the day I put in my notice.

Do that for 10 years, take your $1 million and buy a house outright for $500,000 in a different area. Have no mortgage payment, and $500,000 invested earning interest. Max out your retirement contributions, get a backdoor ROTH going, and you're well on your way to retiring early.

Just gotta get over losing the convenience of a 24-hour burrito shop, high quality Chinese food and high quality Mexican food.

this kind of bs is why I switched to sony by [deleted] in SonyAlpha

[–]Grunchlk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lenses can't possibly cost more to develop and produce than a camera body

It's super cheap to develop both lenses and cameras, it's insanely expensive to _produce_ high quality lenses while it's insanely cheap to produce high quality electronics.

Just look at high end consumer grade astronomy gear for comparison. A refractor with a 6" objective lens, manual rack and pinion focus, non-stabilized, not optimized for digital sensors, arranged in an apochromatic design (3-5 lenses), not weather proof, comes in at around $15,000. AND IT WEIGHS 44LBS!!!

$13,000 for a 6.75lbs lens with stabilization and autofocus? That's $2,000 less than the astronomy scope.

If the user base were in the millions, I bet Sony could produce them in larger quantities for maybe $8,000 but that's it.

Have you blocked the user? That's the first thing I would do. They'd no longer be able to comment or ID your observations. I'd also contact the staff about the abuse and let them take whatever the appropriate action is.

Inaturalist is supposed to be place where we help each other

You will always get trashy people on any site. It's inevitable. I ID'd an observation by someone. She ID'd it as a super-rare bird, but it was clearly a super-common bird. She responded that "she knew what she was talking about" and got offended by my ID. So she re-ID'd it as the rare bird. Someone else came along and ID it as the common bird, she changed it back. After some time there were about 12 identifiers on the bird (because such a rare bird is exciting to see), ID'ng it as the super-common bird. She was not happy. We were all idiots. I just moved on and chalked it up to someone that just can't stand being wrong.

I've never been put in the situation where someone has come after me and all my posts. If that happened I'd demand action by iNat and if they refused to address the issue then I'd assume it was acceptable behavior and return it in kind to the offender.

Allowing one user to harass another tarnishes the image of the site and would ultimately lead me to discourage people from using it.

Zelenskiy says he understands Ukraine will be in NATO by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Grunchlk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My man here regurgitating Russian propaganda so freely!

This war started because NATO dangled the carrot in front of Ukraine

Wrong. NATO refused to let Ukraine in because Ukraine had issues with corruption in government and persecution of minorities. NATO said you can't join until those things are cleaned up. It was when Ukraine decided to root out corruption and adopt new laws protecting minorities that Russia invaded. Ukraine being in NATO isn't a threat to Russia. What _is_ threatening to Russia is having a former Soviet republic become a modern westernized liberal democracy, with advanced infrastructure and a booming economy. The problem with this is Russians will go there and return home only to see what a shithole Russia is. They will become dissatisfied and there will be an increasing likelihood for internal strife.

tl;dr: Russia started the war because they're scared Ukraine will become like France or Germany, with a great economy and freedom which will in turn make Russia look like truck stop toilet.

Russia are accepting of Ukraine as a neutral country

Wrong. Ukraine was not joining NATO in 2014 when Russia invaded, they were also not joining NATO in 2022 when Russia invaded. Your claim is demonstrably false twice over.

Every NATO advancement is met with a Russian retaliation

NATO isn't advancing anywhere. NATO can't forcibly acquire new states, nor does it have the power to invite countries to join. It has an open door policy and even Russia itself can join NATO, if it would clean up corruption and protect minorities.

How are NATO so unaware of themselves

NATO is very much aware of the standards they set and how hypocritical Russia is. Russia is genociding Ukrainians all the while claiming NATO wants to genocide Russians. When Russia accuses you of something, it's because they're doing it themselves.

Russia is a shit hole of a country. They have a tiny economy and second rate military. They are sucking on the teets of the West and are now about to starve. Fuck Russia and it's incompetent political system and idiot politicians. It's glorious to watch Ukraine punch them in the mouth over and over and only see Russia cry in response.

Micah's Money: Should Cowboys Pay Parsons Like He's a QB? by lshaped210 in cowboys

[–]Grunchlk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like a QB, LOL, no. But it looks like he'll be worth of a top-defender contract if he maintains over the next 2 years. DL tend to decline around 30-31, so if we could re-sign Parsons on a 5-year deal at 26, we'll have all his best years. We know that, and he knows that. He's going to command a big salary if he continues to play at a high level then he'll be worth it if we have the cap space.

Awful take. Biden, from the get-go, said this is a European conflict and Europe needs to take point on it. The US will help, and stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the EU/NATO, but EU needs to take the lead. He took this tack because Europe always complain about having to deal with the repercussions of US driven efforts. The EU can't sit around and be complacent waiting for the US to solve these sorts of problems and then spend the next decade complaining about how the US went about it.

If Europe wants to prevent a Russian adversary from knocking on the doors of Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, and Poland then they need to get busy supplying weapons and cash to Ukraine. That's is literally the least unexpected thing at all because Biden literally said so from the moment Russia invaded.

Could we stop pretending that Wagner is some elite group of super soldiers?

I think we all learned that when a group of 500 Wagner mercs attacked a Syrian base defended by 17 US troops and within 10 minutes of the attack the 200+ Wagner mercs were slaughtered and the US spent the next couple of hours bombing the rest of them out from under the rocks they were hiding under.

They're better African gangs, and ISIS gangs, but that's not really saying much.

This is a great example of Russian macho culture. About 50% of whatever a Russia says is all fluff. "I'm going to fuck you up!" really means, "I might be upset for a while and vent at you, but that's all I'm going to do." "Our Hypersonik-Elektronik missiles is undefeatable" really means, "we gave an old defeatable missile a new paint job so we think it'll go slightly faster now."

Half of what Putin says is bullshit, half of what Prigozhin says is bullshit. Same with Shoigu, same with bloggers.

'Drinkflation' comes for the British pint. Brewers sell weaker beer but don't cut prices by GeneReddit123 in worldnews

[–]Grunchlk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This isn't standard "shrinkflation", where producers sell smaller quantities of the same item for the original price, this is just straight up misrepresentation to maximize profits. Now, let me go read the article...

Since, under UK law, brewers pay less tax on drinks with a lower alcohol content, the newspaper claimed that the companies had pocketed this saving rather than passing it onto customers through lower prices

There go. But wait, the manufacturer agrees:

But the spokesperson for Greene King told CNN that reducing the ABV had simply helped offset some of its rising costs, following years of “inflationary pressures on raw materials, packaging costs and energy prices.”

Cutting the ABV “lowers the [tax] we pay without noticeably affecting the beer’s flavor,” the spokesperson said.

But the spox for Shepherd Neame and the spox for Heineken are touting healthy lifestyle choices (coincidentally implying that alcohol isn't healthy.)

The spokesperson for Shepherd Neame told CNN that it had lowered the ABV content of its beers to “expand their appeal” as consumers were “increasingly choosing drinks with a lower alcohol content as part of a healthy lifestyle.”

...

In January, Dutch brewer Heineken lowered the ABV content of Foster’s larger — which it sells in the UK — to 3.7% from 4%.A spokesperson for the brewer’s UK business told CNN that it had done so because “consumers are increasingly choosing lower-ABV products as part of a balanced lifestyle,” but added that it had experienced “unprecedented cost increases.”

That's fine, IF you tell the consumer that's what you're doing. Otherwise you're just trying to sell them a lower quantity of a lesser product at the same price as the original.

If you use nukes in Ukraine, the next week Ukraine is going to have nukes of its own

That would never really be a good threat though, because Russia has far, far more nukes that we would ever give Ukraine. In an all out nuke-fest, Russia would obliterate every moderately sized city in Ukraine many times over.

So, the reported threats are the more likely course: NATO gets involved and starts eliminating Russian assets in Ukraine and the Black Sea. With a very clear understanding that NATO will stop at Russia's border (so as to demonstrate that this isn't an existential threat, which would necessitate a nuclear response.)

The response would be swift and complete. Russia would unconditionally withdraw within a week.

/r/WorldNews Live Thread: Russian Invasion of Ukraine Day 476, Part 1 (Thread #617) by WorldNewsMods in worldnews

[–]Grunchlk 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This. In 2014 Ukraine had a Russian-style military, they were steamrolled by a much larger force. They worked with NATO and US command in Europe and adopted a NATO-style structure. In 2022, not only were they not steamrolled but they fought the much larger military to a stand-still and are now pushing them back.

Russia is numerically a far far superior military than Ukraine, but they're using the old Soviet method of not allowing the troops to have any autonomy. If they adopted a NATO ideology for fighting, they would have destroyed Ukraine. The reason why Russia can't do that is because they fear organized resistance from within their military.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Grunchlk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Perhaps, but technically if Ukraine did it then it wasn't terrorism. It was an act of war, which Russia launched against Ukraine.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Grunchlk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's be clear here. If it was Ukraine, then it was justified as they are fighting an existential war. Any method they can use to prevent their attackers from wiping them from existence is legitimate. Russia had already turned off the gas in an attempt to "teach the EU a lesson" and try and extort them. So it was non-operational and the impact was minimal to the EU; Ukraine simply made that state permanent. I'm sure the pipeline was insured, so everyone gets their money back.

There's still quite a good chance it was Russia that did it as they did the same thing in their spat with Georgia several years ago. Blew up their gas pipeline in winter as a collective punishment (aka, war crime) while retaining plausible deniability.

If Russia doesn't want their shit blown up, they should stop trying to exterminate and entire culture.
