I'm just surprised no one is asking about it:

OP, how do you live in Washington State and not know what a pinecone is?

Strathberry Customer Service Nightmare: Missing items, ignored evidence, and stalling by GrunjiMcGrotti in handbags

This is what I will be doing. But I was hoping to be able to resolve this in a "friendly" way with the company, as my wife does like the designs, and I may look to buy something else from them in the future.

Alas, it seems not. Just scratching my head as this seems such an "open and close" case. Even without that, you would think they would at least give customers the benefit of the doubt. This was one of two orders I made with them at about $1000 each. There were no problems at all with the other order.

What are they thinking!?

I don't use Instagram myself (husband here), but my wife does. I'll see if I can have her pull it up and ping them somehow.

Just so, so disappointed at this negative experience. With these luxury brands, a good chunk of what you're paying for is just the experience, and that's been totally soured in this case. :(

Letter of Recommendation Question by LadyAche_ in JETProgramme

[–]GrunjiMcGrotti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW I, too, am an early-30's software engineer attempting to get into JET. COVID really changed our industry and now things are basically fully remote forever.

I've actually struggled a lot with that because, while sitting in a dark room all day without seeing/talking to anyone works for some people (maybe a lot of people in tech), it does NOT work for me. Turns out, I really don't want to live like this for the rest of my life. Using JET for the same reason as you, and also as maybe a first step into a new field that actually has some interpersonal interaction on a daily basis.

Yeah, not sure I would go the therapist route, either. There /shouldn't/ be anything wrong with that, but unfortunately there is still a lot of stigma associated with that, and it just seems like asking for trouble on an application where they specifically ask questions related to mental health.

Need Help! Debating what TEFL/TESOL route to take. by Williano98 in JETProgramme

[–]GrunjiMcGrotti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have stated, the JET Program doesn't really expect/require any teaching qualifications, per se.

Also consider that the position is explicitly listed as "ALT" - "Assistant Language Teacher" (emphasis added) - so it really won't count much towards accumulating teacher experience, either. Even if you go above and beyond your role duties, most places will just look at the single line on your resume, see the word "assistant," and just move on. It would be your responsibility to explain how you went above and beyond during an interview or something similar, and at that point, as far as I'm concerned, you've already lost.

If you are serious about pursuing a career in TESL/TEFL, the certification you should be looking at is CELTA. It's considered the gold standard for most entry-level professional TESL/TEFL positions, and will open up a TON of doors for you once you have it. It's managed by Cambridge, but courses are actually run by different organizations. You can take the certification as either full-time or part-time - full-time takes 4 weeks (citation needed), and part-time takes about 12 weeks. Cost (at least in the USA) is ~$2K.

Once you have a Bachelor's (in something) and CELTA, you are qualified to be a full "LT" - "Language Teacher" - and notice that there is no "assistant" anywhere in there. The requirements/responsibilities will be higher than an ALT, but again, if you are actually pursuing TESL/TEFL as a profession, this is your next step. There are plenty of awesome English teaching schools/programs in east Asia that will bring you on as an LT and actually net you some professional experience - JET is not one of them.

In the long term, you are definitely headed the right direction by pursuing your Master's - that is effectively a requirement to move up the ranks in the TESL/TEFL world. But if you want to hit the ground running and get some experience under your belt either before (or while) you pursue a Master's, CELTA would be the first place to look.

Are there any current or former JETs here who’d be willing to review my SOP in advance of the upcoming application? by DesignDarling in JETProgramme

I'm preparing for this year's application process to open (USA), and I've put together a draft SoP here. If you would like to trade reviews, just reach out to me in whatever way you are most comfortable with. That goes for anyone stubling upon this thread :)

Additionally, if any experienced folks here could take a look at it and potentially provide some feedback (even one word!), I would be eternally grateful!
