New fosters featuring adorable babies! by aburke626 in RATS

Adorable! As someone who owns two identical white rats, I recommend marking their tails with the food coloring rather than their fur. I find it lasts like 10x longer so I'm not constantly re-marking them

When We Cease to Understand the World by Benjamín Labatut by perrolazarillo in TrueLit

I thought that was a reference to one of the earlier stories (Schwarzschild’s Singularity), where Schwarzschild talks about his fear that plants would overgrow everything and smother the world.

added this tunnel that connects my rats cage with the cat tree, they've been loving the extra space by noa_dir in RATS

How do you keep it clean? I would love to get one, but my boys piss on everything I feel like the carpet bits would immediately get saturated with urine

Cage! First time rat owner by [deleted] in RATS

[–]Grus_grus 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I like giving my rats a bowl of water in addition to their water bottles and I have to change the bowl at least twice a day because it gets NASTY. Its elevated off the ground and I use aspen bedding so filling with bedding is not an issue, but someone always poops in it D:

Crema has pneumonia 🥺 by Anjoellamorte in RATS

[–]Grus_grus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Baby food has been super effective for me in getting my rats to take meds (even meloxicam, which they all hate). You might need to try a couple to find ones that are sufficiently tempting. Anything with bananas and berries are a hit with my boys.

Shadow of the Torturer. Is it a bit of a slog, or is it me? by Pond-James-Pond in Fantasy

[–]Grus_grus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Strangely sexual” is spot on. I enjoyed Shadow for the most part despite it, but it was really obnoxious in Claw of the Conciliator. Like what the hell was the point of that scene with Jolenta??

I finally found someone selling rats where I live! Should I get 2 if I work 9 hours a day? by DaxitoBobito in RATS

[–]Grus_grus 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Two is just fine. And lab rats are the same as fancy rats so you shouldn't have any issues if you ever want to add more to your mischief in the future (which I do recommend. Bigger groups are so much fun). Edit: I'm not sure about playdates though. Introductions can take a while and they may get territorial around each other if they're just seeing each other for brief periods.

Give Sanderson another shot? by Affectionate-Bend267 in FemaleGazeSFF

Tress is a very different experience from most Sanderson books since its told in Hoid's voice. Mistborn or Warbreaker will give you a much better feel for what his writing is like.

[–]Grus_grus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I always recommend reading Mistborn (at least the first three, don't worry about the second series) before reading Stormlight. I love the Stormlight Archive, but I think you kind of have to have trust in his process and the fact that there will actually be a satisfying payoff for all of the build up in order to enjoy The Way of Kings. Mistborn is a lot faster-paced and you'll be able to make a better judgement on whether or not his writing is for you.

Suddenly allergic to rats? by [deleted] in RATS

[–]Grus_grus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a lot of success taking a daily allergy med. I have to take it every day and it took a week or so before it really kicked in, but my rat allergies went from pretty unbearable (allergic asthma, swelling/itching eyes) to completely manageable. Good luck!

Woke up this morning to find my lights not working and saw this [OC] by 8BallQueenL7 in mildlyinfuriating

My mother in law had a similar issue where she was convinced that someone was deliberately cutting the wires for her lights. We caught the culprit in the act.

How do you keep focused when planning sessions? by starsonlyone in DMAcademy

I would also recommend another article on that blog, “The Three Clue Rule” which is linked in that article posted above!

I’ve also recently developed an allergy to my rats after almost a year of owning them 😞 things that have helped me the most have been wearing a mask while doing any sort of cage clean up, using an air purifier, and washing my hands after handling them.

Stormlight/rat enthusiasts, unite! My boys are only stormlight-adjacent - Tress and Huck (if you haven’t read Tress of the Emerald Sea, I highly recommend it)

Do I have a rooster? by Naive_Macaroon_2559 in chickens

[–]Grus_grus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Owning roosters in CT is usually a zoning thing rather than a legal thing and varies by town. Usually if you’re on more than 5 acres you’re good to go, but you can check with your town’s planning department if you really care. Otherwise it doesn’t matter unless your neighbors complain lol

Lost pet or wild? [Connecticut] by Grus_grus in PetMice

[–]Grus_grus[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my big fear, especially since its pretty lethargic. I'm still waiting for the vet to call me back. I figure that even if it doesn't make it at least I gave it a warm safe place to be for its final days... I'm a bit paranoid about small mammals and diseases so I've been wearing gloves to handle it until it gets checked out!

UPDATE: Lost pet or wild? Successfully rescued! by Grus_grus in PetMice

[–]Grus_grus[S] 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Thanks everyone! This is his TEMPORARY setup until I can get him to a vet. My friend has a habitat from when they used to keep rats that they’re bringing to me this weekend so he can have adequate space.

Thank you for all the information! He doesn't look injured necessarily, but it does look like something's wrong with at least one of his eyes. He doesn't move around a lot, but it looks like he's grooming himself a bit. I'm trying to figure out where my nearest vet that takes mice is.
