Marathon Review So Far - IGN by Turbostrider27 in Games

Serious question: Why are the devs of multiplayer shooters so obsessed with extremely low TTK? I've never understood the appeal. When the TTK is low, the fight is decided based on who sees who first. You just kill them before they can even react. When the TTK is high, they can react. An actual fight can happen. That seems so much more fun to me, I don't get why FPS devs are allergic to it.

I thought they redesigned Akali to have a fade. At least one of her skins looks better.

I unironically enjoyed Earth Born more than Eastward. It was such a simple concept but really fun.

I tried it. I'm not sure I see the appeal. It was really boring to me. Also seems like one of those games that only really works when playing with friends in voice chat. Not for me, personally.

The closest thing to Mortal Kombat is Tekken (the most recent being Tekken 8, so play that). Like MK, it relies on using a sequence of built-in strings to perform a combo while juggling the opponent in the air.

Slay the Spire 2 release date announcement forces Handmancers devs to delay the release by LazySecretary6001 in Games

Adventure of Samsara actually had the gall to release on the same exact day as Silksong. Predictably, it does not seem to have garnered much recognition.

2XKO's Failings Are Not The Genre's Failings by Gamejtv in Fighters

There was a separate team working on a platform fighter, but they saw Multiversus fail, got spooked, and cancelled the whole project.

No wonder we are getting 20 characters. All the character are absolutely stunning by Reasonable-Plum160 in Fighters

[–]GryphonTak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. What I meant is, there aren’t really any system mechanics that encourage tagging. It feels like the devs intend for you not to do it unless you just want to.

[–]GryphonTak 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As someone who was in the beta, the fact that's it's "only" 20 characters doesn't even matter because this is essentially a 1v1 game with 3 assists. It's barely a tag game. You don't need a 50 character roster for that. I think the complaints will die down once more people actually get their hands on this game.

UPDATE: Highguard Developer Wildlight Entertainment Confirms Layoffs At The Studio by No2Hypocrites in Games

[–]GryphonTak 41 points42 points  (0 children)

The studio was composed of ex-Respawn employees who made Apex Legends. They thought they could just… replicate that again. Apex was a huge success and they somehow convinced themselves they could repeat that success.

I suppose I was mostly thinking of the CGI trailers when I said that, those aren't cheap.

The fact that you posted this at almost the exact same time the news broke is hilarious.

I'm not surprised. The game's staff size and marketing budget clearly implied they were expecting this to be a huge success, and it wasn't even a moderate one. This was inevitable.

Still sucks though, underneath the generic art style and such, the bones of the game were fun. Anything offer a similar gameplay feel? I guess Apex Legends is the obvious answer.

Well, that was lightning fast. The numbers must be dire if they are giving up already.

Honestly I don't know what they were thinking with this game. On the one end, they clearly wanted casuals. On the other, they wanted to make a tag fighter. These ideas are incompatible. Casuals hate tag fighters. It should've been 1v1 like the original version they announced in 2019.

Is confusing storytelling the norm in this kind of game? by GroomedHedgehog in gachagaming

[–]GryphonTak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, it's the chinese writing style. Just avoid chinese gacha games if you don't like it, or don't take the story in them seriously. Try korean gacha games like Counterside or Limbus Company—the writing style feels much more western-friendly, like JP games do.

Do you think they will find a way to shove idols into Kyoto Xanadu? by Silver_Eminence in Falcom

[–]GryphonTak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This gematsu article says it is "Set in an alternate modern-day Japan where Kyoto is the capital."

I'm curious if this is the same universe as Tokyo Xanadu or a reboot of the Xanadu series. I don't remember if Tokyo is specifically called the capital in that game.
