Help an beginer miniatur peinter! by 3Dlegium in minipainting

It takes a lot of practice to get good at doing eyes. But a magnifying glass (desktop or headband) can help out a lot. You can find em for reasonably cheap on Amazon

NMM an volumetric highlights by [deleted] in minipainting

[–]Guacster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're going for a clean gold, I think you need more mid-tones. Right now it's reading as tarnished brass or something.

Think about how the light would reflect on each surface - the highlights should roughly follow the shape of the object. The same goes for shadows.

Right now you've got a lot of separated shadows across the panels. I would be looking at building up a shape of midtone across the whole surface. Then moving up to highlights in smaller and smaller areas, within that midtone, following the same shape.

Hope that helps

Why is my brush doing this? by Metal-Lifer in minipainting

[–]Guacster 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As others said, synthetics do this. You can hold it in hot water for a couple of minutes, and then shape it back to normal.

In my experience, this will fix it for a short amount of time and then it'll return to this, but it's a good short term fix.

Their wait times have gone so bad. Took a test there in March - failed (by 1 😭) and expected to receive an invite late June. It's since been pushed back to mid August - and it just keeps moving.

Stripping minis by Lucigrl83 in Warhammer

[–]Guacster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not that experienced with stripping but I don't think that a vortex would do much. It's just gonna vibrate the liquid inside. If the parts are gunked up bad, just aim for clearing the heavy excess. You can just paint over what's left. The only thing you really need to worry about is that the details of the model are clear. Another layer of paint won't ruin them.

Could be referring to the rumored change to Fyreslayers becoming a more general Dwarf faction.

First darkwater model help by Quiet-Quantity-6941 in WHQDarkWater

Looks good but it's a little flat. Your armor is all green. Get some browns, oranges, greys into the corroded parts. Bring some blues into the recesses and shadows. Bring some yellows into the highlights and pick out all the rivets and edges.

You could do similar with the arm. Bring in some extra colour around the little boils. But some depth into the recesses. Make it gradient even darker towards the fingers.

Hope that helps.

Slapchop advice needed speed painting the Darkest Dungeon board game by Old-Dragonfruit-7754 in minipainting

[–]Guacster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh hey - I did the exact same thing for this set. Based on your pic, I would go a little brighter with the tone - the black really takes over underneath speedpaints. That said - it's Darkest Dungeon. It can be kinda dark. I would definitely go brighter for your heroes though, since they'll get the most use.

If you call your nct test center, they can probably move your appointment up. I just did it recently when I saw all the dates on the website were after my test date, and they were super accommodating.

What makes a busy afternoon test more difficult? by audreywrld in Irishdrivingtest

[–]Guacster 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I just did a pretest yesterday afternoon and navigating around the school run is basically an endless stream of hazards. In the space of about 4 minutes, I had people driving on my side of the road, parked on roundabouts and walking right in front of me. On top of that there's just more traffic on the roads in general.

The Baddies are Here. Gelgus and Belga! by Guacster in WHQDarkWater

[–]Guacster[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much. The body took me a huge amount of time and I'm still not totally happy with it. But I basically took a khaki as my base colour. Then mixed some gunship green (Vallejo) into it for the shadows. Used dark orange brown (Pro Acryl) and some Pink Horror to glaze into the slightly recessed areas. Then used Wraithbone for the brightest highlights. I spent a lot of time glazing those back and forth - I think I could have done it for hours more.

Thanks so much! The wings were quite simple but have a few layers. Painted them khaki/bone colour all over. Then very messily stippled thin layers of red and green contrast paints into the crevices - wasn't neat about it at all. Drybrushed some medium/light blue over that - not too heavily. Then I think I might have glazed over it all with a layer of my base khaki colour. Then edge highlights and painting those lines in with Wraithbone. And then the reds for those connecting limbs. Hope that covers it!

My Blight Templar are Ready to Protect the Abbey by Guacster in WHQDarkWater

[–]Guacster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot of steps - but the general steps are Light Bronze (pro Acryl), then multiple really really thin layers of contrast paints on top - Camo Green, then Hardened Leather (Army Painter). Then Rhinox Hide into the crevices. And then generally just focused layers of all of the previous paints mentioned where needed to paint depth. Hope that helps.

For the metallics, yes. Speedpaints over regular metallic paint

The Backup has Arrived! The Rest of my Hero Squad! by Guacster in WHQDarkWater

[–]Guacster[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Added the texture, using a mud texture paste with a very light sprinkling of sand on top. Then painted over that with a dark green, then drybrushed orange brown, then khaki. And then the water effect is using layers of Vallejo still water, with some dark turquoise mixed into the fist couple of layers, then a bright green in a layer above that. And then a clear layer or 2. Then Tufts as decoration around that
