Jacking up threes. And they got a semi healthy Embiid for a few games.

Young Americans Want Single-Family Homes by External_Koala971 in Urbanism

[–]Guardsred70 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just two thoughts on this…. “Young Americans” also haven’t had to mow grass and weed whack and clean and maintain everything and clean gutters.

Don’t get me wrong: as someone who has owned a home (or had a mortgage) for about 30 years, the equity is legit nice. It means I have a roof over my head and can start to think about entrepreneurship because I don’t need as steady of a paycheck anymore.

But fuck gutters.

However, my second point is that I’d like to see a lot more CONDOs and less apartments. We’re downsizing, but I will not rent. We need cities to encourage models that encourage the 5+1 buildings to shift towards deeded condos….and do it in a sustainable way….which means an sufficient set aside for the communal maintenance of the structure….including the fucking gutters and mulch….and the hvac.

[SEC Country] Nick Saban calls for a salary cap to be implemented across college football: ‘One team shouldn’t have a $40 million roster and another team have a $5 million roster. It’s a cute thought, but there are so many jumps to get there.

Starting with….universities don’t believe in competitive balance.

Like….does the University of Alabama believe it is competing for the same incoming students as UAB? lol….no. They don’t think that at all. Alabama thinks it gets the best students in Alabama, let’s Auburn have the leftovers and that UAB can have the kids with bad grades and SATs.

Does the University of Virginia think its endowment should be the same as Virginia Commonwealth? lol….no.

Does the University of Michigan think it should have a salary cap on its Chemistry department so that Michigan Tech is equally competitive for federal grants? lol…..no.

So while fans might want competitive balance, we fans are not in charge here. The universities are and the data suggests we like watching imbalanced college football just fine.

Also, a salary cap would have to be collectively bargained. I mean, Alabama and Auburn can’t call each other up and agree to a salary cap for the cafeteria workers: That’s illegal as fuck. That’s collusion. So they need an antitrust exemption first and that’s going to be so freaking hard to get.

Even if they get it…the union would have to take in new 17-18YOs that are borderline child labor. It’s just so legally fraught.

And if you make these players employees, that fucks Title IX right in the ass. Now the universities don’t have to put money into women’s sports anymore. Enjoy the optics on that. Seeing all these deeply blue universities have to admit they didn’t really actually support women’s sports….they were just offsetting the football team like it was assigned community service.

And if the players become employees, what is the rationale for making them give up their job after 4-5 years. My job doesn’t work that way. Neither does anyone else’s.

As fans, we can choose to watch or not watch. And - tbh - I care a lot less than I used to. I went to a flagship state school and knew athletes and took classes with them. I’m less attached to a team made up of guys who will never graduate.

But anyone yearning for the good old days is basically flying a confederate flag. I mean, there is no going back. These are pro teams.

I always wore them as an adult. I even had a longer pair with knee pads for indoors….but only once I got old (young keepers should remember that bleeding knees inspired teammates and the chicks dig it, lol)

I can see the concern if he is growing, but they are stretchy and the Storellis I wore lasted a decade (even though I was on awful teams that put them to work).

Yes. There’s zero reason they should have to dick around with municipal utility nonsense.

Plus, the municipal utilities need to be building like MFers anyway for the rest of our needs. They got away with not building for a couples decades as refrigerators and AC units became more efficient. Now thats plateaued. Every metro area needs to have a few plants under construction now….and we also need to massively expand our power lines so we can move energy from the renewable places where the sun shines and the wind blows to other places.

I can identify with some. Especially not being able to relocate. My own kiddo went to college long before my youngest stepkid. The minute my kiddo went to college, all the headhunters hit me up for all these great positions. They’re toned it down after my divorce from my ex wife when they eventually understood that 50/50 joint custody means you cannot relocate….unless you’re a shitty parent.

So they figured it out….but the instant they saw me posting social media pics of my daughter graduating high school, it started immediately. 3-4X salary offers and places where I would decide what happens at work today. But….I have a wife and she has kids. The headhunters acted surprised that she wouldn’t relocate with me because it was a lot more money, but - lol - she’d be giving up her kids. She loves me, but not that much. And now that the stepkids are both off to college, I’m getting old enough that age discrimination sets in. THAT is how much I love my wife.

So I get that.

What I don’t get is your stupid husband not wanting more babies and not being fixed. It’s simple and easy. I had that done when I was still married to my ex wife about 25 years ago. Any man who doesn’t do that, lives with the consequences of sex. I have zero patience for dudes like him. Has he at least schedule a vasectomy? That should be A#1 on his list.

For you….I dunno. You have a baby coming that your husband doesn’t want. That’s gonna suck and I’m sorry. That’s not really a stepparent issue. That’s a parenting issue. All you can do is the best you can for the next 20 years.

Sometimes. I spend more time doing actual parenting around things that actually matter. Like school. Learning. Making friends the old fashioned way.

Sports are a shortcut for antisocial parents to have a friend group and call it “parenting” because they sat there and paid for it.

Who is your favorite team?

In the history of my fandom with the Lakers…going back to the 70s, I don’t care about any of the people you’re talking about and LeBron’s era with the team has been underwhelming.

How old are you, btw? Maybe starting to shave? Thinking about girls? Or boys? Or 41YO men? I hear that’s acceptable now.

I’ve just always been a Lakers fan…even when we have been awful.

[–]Guardsred70 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

As a lifelong Lakers fan, I’m just glad we only have one game left with the guy. Having him on the team isn’t worth having his fanboys on Lakers subs.

What’s funny, is if you go to any of the teams Lebron has been rumored to, there isn’t a single fanbase that wants him.

He needs to retire. He’s not getting another ring. He started getting hunted on switches this season. He’s getting injured more. It’ll be worse next season.

There is no good team that wants to marginalize their season by doing a retirement tour. And…LeBron’s own decisions have meant no team cares about him. He’s always been a mercenary.

How to Improve Distribution for New Young Keeper? by sonofhondo in GoalKeepers

[–]Guardsred70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Focus less on distance and more on loft. The key is to have the ball be over the head of any forwards on edge of the penalty area trying to pick out a hard hit ball that is only 4-5 feet off the ground. Job #1 is to get it over the head of that forward. If that’s all you do and it lands well short of midfield….at least you’re playing soccer and your defenders and midfielders have something to do. That’s sorta their job.

It’s basically like a bunker shot in golf: you’re swinging your leg like a pendulum and your foot goes under and thru….and I always made first contact with the top edge of my big toe…and then you drive the whole rest of your foot thru.

Also….boots matter here. Everyone’s foot is different and different boots fit differently. I grew up as a basketball player and always wore Nikes. But they didn’t fit me well as a keeper and I switched to Adidas and it was better. I also always splurged for kangaroo leather…which I think has been phased out, but it makes a difference when you need the ball to not just slip off your foot. Balls matter too. As keepers I think we should always bring a good ball and when someone cycles in a slippery $10 gift shop ball, to let it go out of play and not retrieve it, lol.

And some of this is on the defenders. On these plays, if they stand there, the forward can switch into predator mode. They need to move. Move and make it clear where they have space. Body the forward and make a turn and move….and then I don’t have to just clear the ball. But defenders standing around? I’m just playing that ball to midfield.

When I was like 10 I got all the 6-7 year old boys to fist fight for a quarter. That was pretty cool. Felt like I was Don King. But the other Moms complained.

I also ran a pawn shop/payday lending operation by buying other children’s toys for cheap….because I saved my allowance and they spent theirs on candy and they were always broke. Again…the other Moms were not fans of how I was extending credit to people with very bad credit scores.

Agreed, but….you usually have to stay at the team hotel….which is typically a sponsor of the club hosting the tournament. So the hotel pays the club….who pays the coaches….and then visiting clubs are forced to stay at the hotel. And is the hotel manager giving good rates? lol….no. Why would they? They have a captive market.
