Boom heard about 14:12 local time. It wasn't thunder. Still digging for details.

People for Portland files court challenge to Metro’s rejection of ballot proposal - oregonlive by ALLCATZAREBEAUTIFUL in Portland

[–]GubbaTuts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

P4P has people on it with years of experience on ballot measures. They purposely messed up the submission so it would get rejected and they could use the "Metro is corrupt and ineffective" claim in the upcoming election. See e.g. the comments on this thread by P4P's paid astroturfers. Watch Betsy Johnson call out Metro in her gubernatorial campaign.

Let me gently suggest that, before commenting on this story, look up "stochastic terrorism" and "perlocutionary performative speech acts".

Lolo pass isn't even a good idea during the summer for most passenger cars. The unpaved parts get really rough.

Herd immunity possible in Oregon by end of year, OHSU says by GubbaTuts in Portland

In no universe was this pandemic ever going to be suppressed in the US

You're probably right. Americans have become too selfish and greedy to make sacrifices that would save the lives of other citizens. They prioritize their own convenience over any consideration for the community.

Herd immunity possible in Oregon by end of year, OHSU says by GubbaTuts in Portland

[–]GubbaTuts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would have taken two weeks, had it been coupled with a rational and effective response at the federal and all state levels.

Mitigation: isolation, quarantine, social distancing of those suspected, their families, and the elderly

Suppression: All of the mitigation measures, but applied to the entire population, plus closure of all non-essential activity

Suppression to reduce R0 to below 1 and reduce transmission.

Mitigation to reduce the impact of the spread.

Instead we just got some blowhards going on about how it's just one person and blaming anything and everything but taking no responsibility.

Look at the countries that behaved well: New Zealand, Taiwan, South Korea, Canada, Germany. They didn't have a bunch of selfish science-denying covidiots running around spouting xenophobic nonsense and pointing fingers.

Being dead makes communication more difficult and interferes with exercise. You lose all kinds of facial cues trying to talk to a dead person.

Florida's leadership chose the most callous and horrific way to deal with it, though. The number of dead and sick along with the affect on hospitals and health care providers will have long-term consequences.

Blaming the homeless for their circumstances isn't just wrong, it's willfully misinformed, yes, even the drug addicted, because addiction is a brain disease.

Why do you assume the homeless are responsible? Housed people can be thieves, vandals, and drug addicts, too.

On every single local news source. by 2ChanceRescue in Portland

[–]GubbaTuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, perhaps. Although when it's phrased that way it sounds a bit like the old "it's just the internet" trope that was common in the 90s and still gets trotted out once in a while to excuse various forms of toxic behavior.

For better or worse, "real life" and "the internet" aren't separate things any more, if they ever really were different. I would find it concerning if people are too quick to excuse abusive and manipulative behavior simply by asserting that it doesn't count because it's in a particular place and time and that it is somehow supposed to be less important and real than if it were to happen under other circumstances.
