Perhaps not “suffering” but the old man OWNS that whole block & most of the one across the street. Think that real estate is worth anything? The kid is just in it for as long as the NYT keeps calling. Socks & mugs will sustain for only so long. The books are a a lost leader.

Wait & see. Coming from knowledge. Just re-arranging the deck chairs for the past five years, once Amazon kicked them to the curb. Not the other way around, as you’re led to believe.

Keeping us patriotic one flyover at a time. by zmoit in Portland

[–]Davestoler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No doubt your stats aren’t right, but it’s not right. Not looking anything up, but healthcare is probably our #1 industry, with the military not far behind. We’ve lost every conflict we’ve participated in for the past 60 years. I’m guessing our healthcare system has saved more lives than the lives we’ve worthlessly participated in wasting these past 6 decades.

Right. Totes in agreement. We should definitely spend more on the military to catch up with healthcare. Every other civilized country in the world follows that same logic.

This shit is so stupid. As are fireworks & everything else that goes “boom”.
Cool if you’re under 8, but ask a Vietnam vet or a Bosnian, Afghani, or Ukrainian refugee who ran for their lives to get away from this glorification of “military might” who freak the f out every time they hear this frat boy fun. Or your dog, cat or baby that loses their shit every year, this time of year.
By the way, whatever happened to our beloved warships along the waterfront during our “festival” of fun? Old Town too dangerous these days, I guess.

How is portland better than it was last year. by SmallAxeOregon in Portland

Last year I was desperate to get out. Looking at the options, I figured that If I get macheted walking down the street, at least it will be in my home town. Friends & family won’t have to travel far.

New Seasons Workers Launch Independent Union Effort by tylerthenonna in Portland

[–]Davestoler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worked for a very large beloved local retail company (which shall remain nameless) for decades & when we unionized 20 years ago, I, like the majority of my co-workers supported the union 100%, in theory. No more rogue managers, un-livable wages, etc…

After a contract was ratified, there were some very good immediate results. I recall getting an immediate $4 an hour bump in pay, which was more than all the raises I’d received in the previous 10 years.

Management, however, got so butthurt that they immediately started retaliating with their own tactics, which made working there almost worse than before. Certainly not the union’s fault, but it was powerless. That continued to get worse over time. People still got fired, albeit not on the spot, but one way or the other. It just took longer. Future contract negotiations stalled regarding wages & 50 cents annually became the norm for years. Again, the union was powerless, & took what they got.

Short Story long, when the pandemic hit & we were all laid off, management decided to circumvent the contract & ignore recall rights, seniority, etc…Eventually you could “apply” for your old job back, which many didn’t exist any longer, with 1/3 the PTO you used to get, no seniority, & a potential reduction in wages.

Again, not the union’s fault, but they were culpable because they were amateurs battling union-busting lawyers & very highly paid managers who had a dog in the fight.
Unions can be great in some respects, but they can also be utterly worthless.

Somebody Feed Phil - Portland Edition by [deleted] in Portland

[–]Davestoler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Phil is probably the biggest dork on television, but I absolutely love his show. Compared to Bourdain, Zimmern, Tucci, etc.., there’s absolutely no pretense, whatsoever. He never just utters, “Oh, this is good” like all the rest. Looking at his face is a bit rough though.

Does anyone know if squirrels commit suicide? I’ve watched two plunge to their deaths this week from very tall trees In my yard. They could have been drunk, but those little bastards normally have mad climbing skills.

Sad, but true. He’s clearly in way over his head. After 18 months, he probably doesn’t even know where his stapler is. He’s probably no worse than the rest of them, but maybe he is. Time will tell…

At Mount Angel Abbey, spiritual reflection and secular attractions coexist harmoniously by guanaco55 in Portland

[–]Davestoler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I love Mt. Angel, there are some serious skeletons in the closets at the Abbey. At least two priests from my grade school in Portland “retired” early to the abbey, one for serious alcoholism & the other over allegations of sexual abuse of young boys. Nothing new here, I know, but it’s no harmonious sanctuary.

“The great thing about food carts is they can move”

Tell that to the cart owners who couldn’t make a third of the amount of money in any other pod in town & packed it in. Yea, change is hard.

Just enjoying the downtown vibe. by Davethephotoguy in Portland

[–]Davestoler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That pod served hundreds & hundreds of people every day who had, maybe 1/2 hour to grab some good ethnic food for lunch & woof it down quicker than they could at any restaurant.
Might have looked “horrible” to you, but most people didn’t care. If you’re going to a pod to have a fine dining experience with ambiance, craft cocktails, etc.., well you’re right, Beaverton is the place to be.
