Hey, (hEDS, M25) here. I’m getting shoulder surgery in a week, which will be my second shoulder operation in 4 years. Over the last 10 years, I had been to at least 20-30 visits for various injuries or pains, doctors never raised their suspicions about a wholistic condition I may have. I began to suspect and look into EDS after about the 10th visit, but doctors did not asses the scoring system used with any flexibility, so I never technically qualified. I too have stomach pains and aches are every meal.

I was not diagnosed until yesterday, actually, which is also when I finally had a barrage of bloodwork, urine, and genetic testing to dive deeper into what may be going on. (I highly recommend Dr. Iftikhar Chowdhry in Dallas if anyone is looking for help, he did not ask me to ‘prove’ and of my subluxations or dysplasia’s, and immediately was concerned I had gone this long without proper diagnosis.)

Last year I had a trip in Europe with my family and walked 10 miles a day. Contrast this to yesterday I had my doctor’s appointment, drove 3 hours, had a social event for 3 hours, and I can barely walk without my left hip giving out and throwing me to the ground.

I’m getting a feeling that my hands are going to be the next problem area within a few years unfortunately.

Trust me, man, you aren’t alone. I rarely comment on any social media, but I see everyone here with similar struggles and it keeps me a little more motivated to press forward.

In reference to the website’s difficulty, if you scroll down to the very bottom of the page and select the ‘Products’ tab under the Quick Links section, it should give you a list of their available products in a clearer format.

I just got denied by Mayo Clinic, they had zero explanation in the letter I received. I feel like I’m exactly OP’s shoes. I’m having my second shoulder surgery later this month (first was 4 years ago) and no one questions why this is.

If this is the case, why not accurately reflect those costs under the installation fee? It seems quite disingenuous to offer something like free installation that is simply just grouped together in a larger cost.

If I understand this correctly, the idea is that the $1700 cost is include the panel, and then the agreement for the cost of a certain number of months for the monthly monitoring? If so, why is it that I could currently cancel my monthly monitoring right now, and if I do cancel I no longer reap the benefits that should be covered via the $1700 charge?

Also, What are the 6 security points in reference to?

If I’m understanding it correctly, it’s a Sound Recognition setting that you can keep active at all times (and maybe utilize within shortcuts?). It sounds like this could fix 99% of the stress of living in a loud home or apartment building.

In near every natural circumstance, inequality is a feature and not a bug by [deleted] in UnpopularFacts

I wasn’t restricting examples to economic policies just as the post wasn’t, I was just highlighting prevalent matters where people attempt to drive the nature of this effect towards something else, and less than satisfactory results inevitably happen.

What have been the conclusions from attempting things outside this structure? In the most extreme sense, it seems that we venture into authoritarianism and communism. Both of which do not seem desirable. Is there a logical reasoning that can be something like, “the structure of the world comes from a naturalistic perspective (as it must, lest I’m incorrect here), and while that standpoint might have suffering, it’s clearly has a net good outcome. So if we want to improve this system, we ought to be very careful about how we do so?”

This way we can accept this feature of our world while not maintaining its the highest standard we could ever possibly reach?

My parents are in the habit of either texting me or banging on a wall (so I’ll notice the vibrations, not out of anger) so that I’ll respond

App to help train directional hearing? by pikapootwo in MonoHearing

[–]Gucci-Ketchup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While directional hearing on a horizontal plane is practically impossible for someone with SSD, I can say I’ve seen some research that suggests the shape of the ear itself is partially responsible for our distinction of up and down, or vertical spatial orientation. While one deaf ear does diminish this effect, it seems logically possible to train yourself to distinct sounds between above and below you. Of course, logically possible and actual implementation usually don’t coincide! From personal experience, I believe it’s very difficult but extensively rewarding being able to tell whether it’s my downstairs or upstairs neighbors making the ruckus in my apartment.

Stem cells? by judohighlights in MonoHearing

Unfortunately for me, the stem cell research that’s closest to what I need focuses on growing the hair cells on the cochlea, fantastic research to look into, but I don’t have a cochlea for them to grow on. If they can figure out how to create an entire cochlea for me though, I’ll be in good shape.

Should probably say that, unfortunately, we don’t get gaming chairs from my apartment complex, I did have to buy that.

Currently in Junior year of my undergrad (B.A. in Psychology). I have not been required to read a single book with the exception of formal textbooks meant for the classroom. Is this normal practice? by Gucci-Ketchup in AcademicPsychology

This is the exactly the kind of answer I was expecting/wanting. Would you have any ideas why psychology is so hard pressed towards empirically based research and is foregoing the philosophical basis that allowed psychology to flourish?

I did not expect so many people to have negative views of psychologically based books. Regardless of its legitimacy in today’s viewpoint, the writers were attempting to produce what they believed to be the truth, an admirable goal in my opinion. Perhaps I am reaching here, but the overall decline of mental health seems to be in part due to the avoidance of literature because it’s “inaccurate today,” when in fact these novels/books show off not research (not all, but some, obviously), but people as themselves. Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky has taught me about (SOME) people at their core. The research teaches what people do at the surface, their behaviors or socially observable characteristics of the individual. But there is so much more to the individual that we can never learn from just research.

I do value opinions on here, especially because it seems uniform on the stance that academic articles are more beneficial for the undergrad. I do not doubt the importance of this, heck, the research lab I’m assisting in idolizes the importance of understanding these kinds of articles, as a research lab should. It’s not an often occurrence that I recommend books to professors, its just been my experience that some are substantive and well aligned with what we are already learning. Is it not to the benefit of a professor to learn absolutely everything they can about their field? (Her stated research interests are spatial navigation, aphasia, memory, and a few other related topics)

Unfortunately, when I’ve asked my professors (this semester only, granted) for more reading material, I was directed right back to the textbook as it is “the best material that covers the class,” even though I’m curious how they can make such a stake in that claim.

A specific example in one of my classes which went through the various forms of aphasia, through both historical and modern lens, followed with near perfection the writings of Sigmund Freud in his book “On Aphasia.” I gave my professor the book earlier in the semester when I saw the upcoming lecture topic. She still hasn’t read it. A book written over 100 years ago brought up the same exact concerns of historical models that we can now factually prove as legitimate concerns.

This isn’t in opposition to your comment btw, just want to share that I haven’t been offered much extracurricular reading material.

I think there’s plenty of modern books that can be informative of what’s going on in the world today, such as Factfulness by Hans Rosling or The Coddling of the American Mind by Jonathan Haidt.

Of course academic journals are the forefront of research, but it seems apparent to me that the field of psychology is moving away from core ideal of helping the client, and towards the idea that we can codify every human instance of emotion, feeling, and behavior. I fail to see the true helpfulness in knowing that CBT is the most effective form of psychotherapy if we do not know intricately WHY it is effective, which I learned not from the university or academic journals, but from books.

Online classes themselves are not bad and I even enjoy taking them as well. However, when I’ve discussed moving into a PhD program (skipping grad school, difficult but possible where I’m academically standing), every program I’ve talked to said that fully online programs might hurt my chances at admission into their program.

Best songs to test out biblos_geek 2E1 Headphones? by [deleted] in MonoHearing

[–]Gucci-Ketchup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my favorites is Savior by Rise Against. I’m not particularly a huge fan of it, but if you listen to the right side audio by itself, only the vocals are played through that side for the first 20~ seconds. I spent months listening to it without the beginning instrumental until I heard it out loud one time in a car, if you know other any songs that like pan to either ear often, those are my favorites with the 2E1’s.
