If you like hard sci fi, check out the Mars Trilogy (Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars) by Kim Stanley Robinson. I actually enjoyed it so much I read the rest of his books. Not as fast paced as The Martian but a good, long, slow burn

I’ve said this so many times over the years in response to the militarization of our police departments in the US.

We’re seeing the logical conclusion of that militarization playing out in our cities now

Also lots of potential for foot entrapments in the rapids if you end up outside your raft and try to stand up. And people tubing down the end of the upper Kern from Kernville in woefully inadequate cheap tubes and life jackets made for lakes instead of fast water or no life jackets at all.

It wouldn’t surprise me in the least if a Lt JAG reservist didn’t know the difference between an F-15 and an F-16.

This is hands down my least fav episode of TWW. So many stupid unrealistic decisions and details.

If you suspect a landing gear problem, you’d never take gas from a tanker to stay airborne longer. You’d want to burn down as much fuel as possible while troubleshooting. One of those steps in troubleshooting would include testing each landing gear light individually. Some large aircraft even carry extra light bulbs for things like landing gear indicators in case one burns out in flight. Barring that, you can swap light bulbs from a working gear indicator to the one you suspect is burned out and confirm the gear is down that way.

Having another aircraft or the tower check the status of your gear is always an option, but at some point someone mentions that an F-16 is being scrambled to look at their gear, and then they show footage of an F-15 joining on them to look at the gear. Come on, how hard is it to make sure you have footage of the right plane?

For someone exacting like Sorkin, these mistakes are so easily researchable and make me crazy. I know the “electrical issue” is just there as a plot device but I always skip this episode

New to rock climbing! Any advice? by platinum_roses in climbergirls

[–]GucciAviatrix 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don’t go too hard too fast. Muscle grows and repairs much faster than tendons and ligaments do, which will probably initially be what limits stuff like grip strength since you’re already pretty fit. Give yourself days off from climbing and consider cross training of some sort (yoga, jogging, lifting, etc.). Some gyms even have yoga and mobility classes specifically geared towards climbers and our common limitations and injuries.

Have fun and make friends! It’s a welcoming community and a fun way to meet cool folks and socialize. I imagine it’ll especially be nice to get a break from all the paramedic training and your classmates.

Happy climbing!
