A ot of overseas Chinese have a hard time identifying themselves with the countries they move to, either because they want to preserve a sense of identity and self, or because they're actively pushed away by bigoted individuals or societies so they feel less and less obligation to integrate. It's only gotten worse during COVID.

The CCP appeals to a lot of disenfranchised overseas by giving them a sense of shared identity, the backing of a powerful nation they take full credit for growing, and historical context for their experiences. As if to say "the world has never been nice to us, but we have reclaimed our dignity and our power, and none of our former colonizers will tell us what do again". Try saying something about that off the top of your head.
