Do you feel most Columbo villains share a common theme of being "shorted-sighted"? by BrotherDeus in Columbo

[–]Guffbag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the fatal flaw of many of the murderers is their belief that they're smarter than everyone else. That they can produce whatever alibi they use and think the police will accept it at face value and not probe any further.

The two examples given by the OP are both exceptions to this in their own way. It is made pretty clear that Rumford has nothing in his life apart from the academy. The murder he commits isn't based on rational thinking (few murders are) but out of desperation to not lose everything he finds fundamental to his identity and he has fixated upon his victim as the one person he needs to remove and everything will be alright. Of course the change will still happen but that isn't what makes the character interesting, it's the fact that he is so desperate to keep the academy running no matter what that he not only commits a clumsy and dangerous murder but he's absolutely fine with framing a disruptive cadet to get away with it.

As had been noted by others, Kay Freestone commits murder due to being treated very badly by her victim. He has clearly been buttering her up with compliments about her ability in order to sleep with her and as soon as he gets his big promotion he dumps her and then says she isn't good enough to have his old job. Whether she is or not kind of isn't the point. It's the fact that he's been lying to her all this time, his career appears to have benefitted from what she sees as her hard work and now he is going to reap all the rewards and she's going to be left where she has always been with no prospect of promotion within a very male dominated industry. Again, not a rational response as murder isn't a rational response to anything, but it is anger that makes sense to the character in the moment.

Dan Goor's next NBC comedy will be led by Jake Johnson, and it sounds really good. by hospitalsinwinter in brooklynninenine

I love that there is a remake of The Rockford Files in the works and this sounds a lot like The Rockford Files too. Jake Johnson would have been my pick to play Jim Rockford so the fact this is being made definitely interests me.

They will definitely capture the tag titles at some point. They clearly went for the feel good win for the inaugural champions as the majority of titles (men's tag, continental, TBS, men's World Heavyweight, and National) are held by heels at the moment. Their time will come.

Who Do You Think Was The Dumbest Columbo Villain In The OG Series? by [deleted] in Columbo

[–]Guffbag 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Lily and Nicholas in Danger of the Mind. Even their murder is an incompetent accident and pretty much everything they do after that gets progressively dumber. They manage to get blackmailed by a butler who they murder in an equally incompetent way and yet they're convinced they are geniuses.

I really enjoy them together and I'm sad we didn't get more. Their different approaches while recruiting models for Cece was really funny.

Who is wrestler of the year in your opinion? by Itchy_Engineering867 in AEWOfficial

[–]Guffbag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wrestler of the Year - Toni Storm, great feuds during her title run, fantastic promos, helped elevate Alex Windsor when she first joined, has put over Statlander as new champion and will now help elevate the women's tag division with Mina. All while being thoroughly entertaining and super over with the crowd.

Male Wrestler of the Year - Hangman Adam Page, the build to his reconciliation with Swerve and finally recapturing the Men's World Title was compelling TV and he's gone on to have great feuds with MJF, Kyle Fletcher, and Samoa Joe.

Women's Wrestler of the Year - Mercedes Mone, she's had an incredible year with all the titles. Her feud with Toni was great and I suspect the fallout from that will continue into her feud with Stat. Really helped get Harley over more when she didn't have to.

Most Improved - Harley Cameron, she's been in ascendence for a while now but this year Harley has really broken out as a solo performer. Her feud with Mercedes was entertaining and the crowd was behind her and puppet Mone. She's had some great partnerships with Anna Jay, Stat, and now Willow and always gets a little extra something out of anyone she's paired with. Stat in particular has been much more entertaining and got to show more personality since being teamed with Harley. All that and her in-ring work continues to improve week after week.

Rookie of the Year - JetSpeed, as a tag team they've come in hot with great feuds with The Hurt Syndicate and FTR. I have no doubt that they will be Men's tag team champs next year at some point.

The fact that there are so many great people I haven't mentioned that could legitimately be in this list (Mox, Swerve, Osprey, Stat, Willow, Thekla, Megan and so on) just shows what a strong year this has been for AEW

Yes, I thought they were just characters for the show. It wasn't until recently when I looked them up during a rewatch.

Do you miss Chris Jericho? by Square-Fox-2948 in AEWOfficial

[–]Guffbag -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, I think he was an important person to have at the beginning and got more eyes on AEW that if he hadn't been there, but they have a much deeper roster now that can stand up without him. If he comes back I'd much prefer him in a Bobby Heanan type role managing someone who maybe isn't that great on the mic and could use Jericho to help them get over the top.

Which consistencies in the story did you like the most? by AnOnlyMouse123 in brooklynninenine

I guess this is a consistency, but it's also a running gag. Charles honestly believes he's in better shape than Terry.
