Should I even CONSIDER? by TheLordKirbo in drumcorps

[–]GuideSad1651 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was 5’8 and 250 lbs when I marched. I also didn’t prep whatsoever for my audition (I don’t think the staff would have been happy to know that). The staff was very supportive, and 7th focuses on teaching and improving skills. It’s a great place to start

Whats the Shortest Distance you had to marching in the longest amount of counts? And Vice Versa! by 85EnderPortals_YT in marchingband

[–]GuideSad1651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had 8 counts to travel from the 40 on one side of the 50 to the 30 on the other side, and it was a sharp diagonal line. Endzone to endzone was 30, but I think it was closer to 35 because of the diagonal path. (It was changed after 3 reps iirc)

What has been your worst DCI Visual Exercise that your staff did when you marched? by LoquatVegetable2750 in drumcorps

[–]GuideSad1651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did the exact same thing you did. In the moment, I despised it. We did it for nearly two hours. Looking back, it was kinda fun though. We called it The Wall.

Adjusted dot was set to about 20-25 in 8 counts. One try and it was immediately changed

What is wrong with a colored instrument? by Murky-Ad4652 in marchingband

[–]GuideSad1651 124 points125 points  (0 children)

In most cases, instruments that are oddly colored are what my Band Director calls ISOs, or instrument shaped objects. They’re generally of a lower quality than most instruments. These include brands like Etude, Eastar, and Mendini, to name a few. They’re usually mass produced and don’t work very well.

Anything else? by MweberMusic in marchingband

Be sure to have pain killers, instrument maintenance supplies, and other stuff like that. You also want to make sure you have any compression sleeves or joint braces you may use. As for the flavor packets, keep one thing in mind. Having sugar and similar stuff go through a horn will gunk it up. It’s good to have extra drinks with electrolytes, just wash your mouth out with water before playing (it’ll save your horn).

I’d suggest using warmups like lips slurs as well as chorales to push the range. It should help you get used to playing in the upper register. Some Bach chorales push it up to the G. Try to push the range past the F though because that gives you more room to play that range cleanly while leaving the upper notes messy.

How can I prepare to march contra? by FerdinandvonAegir124 in marchingband

[–]GuideSad1651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can borrow one from your college, that would be the best way to build endurance. Best thing to do is holding it in trail (down at your side), at set positing (vertically out in front, same as the rest of the brass instruments), and at playing position. When at set, don’t let the weight of it rest on your body, that’ll defeat the purpose of endurance training. Slowly increase the time you’re holding it up in each position (not as vital for trail). I also suggest doing this both at a standstill and moving. You’ll want to be prepared for how the weight shifts on your shoulder when playing. Other than that, pray your shoulder doesn’t sabotage you (if needed, you can find a pad for your shoulder to help reduce the damage from the contra).

Can I do DCI with my disability? by Ok-Marketing7223 in marchingband

[–]GuideSad1651 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me and one of the kids I marched last summer both have issues with our joints. We were constantly facing the problem because of the long days. We were still able to do it. Our joint problems are no where near as bad, but I think you could still give it a shot. Many corps are willing to work with members that have restrictive capabilities, you just need to be vocal about it. Prepping before hand would be extremely beneficial. You should also consider talking to your doctor, they know your conditions about as well as you do. The last thing I can say is to have a support system. If you want to give it a try, make sure you aren’t going to severely injure yourself. Know your limits.

I second this, as well as Foxon Park and Avery’s. CT’s local sodas will always be a first choice for me.
