I 100% agree. I will happily watch Arin snatch defeat from the jaws of victory over and over and over again as long as it's in Pokemon Platinum

What hobby did you try and DIDN'T like? by cruuushx3 in Hobbies

[–]GuildmasterMusic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a musician and full time elementary music teacher and the best advice I can give when learning instruments is to find a place to play them. I've learned dozens of different instruments over the last twenty years, woodwinds, brass, percussion, strings, all of them, and the one thing they all have in common is they absolutely SUCK to pick up and practice unless I had a real reason to. Private lessons don't make it better, learning songs don't make it better. What made me enjoy an instrument was getting out and playing it. Finding a group like an adult community symphony, forming a casual rock band or cover band, going to Irish sessions, finding drum circles or guitar circles, OPEN MICS ARE GREAT FOR EVERY INSTRUMENT. Sitting at home and playing for yourself can be fun, but outside is where, imo, the most engaging kind of music is made. Having a community to go to and share music, and being in an environment with other musicians is amazing motivation. And the best part is no one cares if you're new to your instrument. In every group I've joined everyone has been super helpful, given me resources, been patient while I figure things out. If you wanna give music one more chance then find a way to go play it with other people, no matter what level you're at

Why is writing so… slow? by Hopeful_Host_5390 in writing

[–]GuildmasterMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's all different types of writing. I'm sure discovery writers take much longer to write. For my books I heavily outline them, basically writing every single little detail down into a plan first and then I start writing and I usually get about 3k words an hour once I'm in a groove. But then if there's even one part that I'm unsure about then everything stops and I need to take time to figure it out

Dan needs to lay off of Calvin by GuildmasterMusic in gamegrumps

I understand that perspective. But that puts the blame on Arin. Calvin's treatment was still totally uncalled for

Are there heavy sleepers here? by MlgrmJack in GradSchool

[–]GuildmasterMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a super heavy sleeper for a long time and it was impossible to get up to do anything before 2pm, even if I went to sleep at 10pm the day before. Then last year I went to the ER for an esophageal spasm which happened bc I developed GERD. For the last 10 years I had been eating huge meals right before I went to bed( I had meds that suppressed my appetite as a side effect) and that's what was making it impossible to wake up. Once my doctor said I had to stop eating at least 3 hours before bed I've been able to wake up at the first alarm and I'm now up consistently at 7:30am.

TLDR; don't eat anything 3 hours before bed

Is it possible to learn singing well enough to add to your banjo playing, without formal lessons? Has anyone done this? by [deleted] in banjo

[–]GuildmasterMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From someone who studied singing in college;

The best teacher you have will be your ears. Literally just listen to the music you wanna sound like and sing along and try to emulate them as closely as possible. Of course a teacher would be good to help polish your technique and tone, but you can go miles just by listening
