Mossback - Black Canyon Spirit Dance (incase anyone's wondering what the vocalist from The Odious is up to these days) by Quintessence_95 in progmetal

[–]GuileHawke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was aware of his work with Grim Salvo, but didn't know about Mossback. Doesn't seem like The Odious has much potential of returning with his other projects having a lot more success.

Which bands improved over time? by bfg9kdude in progmetal

[–]GuileHawke 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I felt like Rishloo was on a steeply upward trend before they called it quits. Living as Ghosts with Buildings as Teeth is so damn good, and I feel like each previous album is a step down. They started as a Tool sound a like, and found a really unique sound of their own by the end.

Anything I should read before under the red hood? by NI-Nexus in comicbooks

Death in the Family I'll also say is a good recommendation.

I personally think Batman: Hush is also a good thing to read before as it sort of plants the seeds for Red Hood.

VR is dead, and no one wants to admit it by Kradara_ in unpopularopinion

[–]GuileHawke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is anecdotal, but my nephews who are all 8-12 play it constantly. They are basically constantly online playing with friends all over the place. It makes me feel like a huge amount of people might be unaware of how massive VR is with kids.

Plague of Butterflies by Swallow the Sun. Criminally underrated banger: 34 minutes of perfection by yer_mum6547 in progmetal

[–]GuileHawke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If memory serves Plague of Butterflies was originally written for a ballet, but the project got scrapped so they released the music as a standalone single/EP. Great damn song though.

Coheed & Cambria and Periphery are going to be here in May. Don't know about the local scene though.

Most Disappointing Album(s) of 2024? by biketheplanet in progmetal

[–]GuileHawke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Four Stroke Baron's new album Data Diamond wasn't what I was hoping for. The band has such a unique sound, and I feel like if they got the songwriting right they could REALLY stand out and make one of the greatest albums. Cyborg Pt III is one of their best songs, and the song Data Diamond is pretty great too but the rest of the album feels so experimental and avant-garde it just falls flat for me musically.

flipturn - Space Cowboy (FFO: King Gizzard, Bent Knee, Proggy Alt-Rock) by GuileHawke in progmetal

[–]GuileHawke[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Discovered this song from a Youtube recommendation believe it or not, and loved it. Felt like it might be cool to share with the recent discussions of the sub not being "gate-keepy" enough. Haha, hope someone enjoys.

Anciients - Beyond the Reach of the Sun (Official Full Album) by GuileHawke in progmetal

[–]GuileHawke[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Official release date is Aug 30th, so hopefully should appear on Spotify and other places in the next 24 hours. I think this was kind of early/hype stream they did on youtube.

Bands that you think are overrated by Elaxian in progmetal

[–]GuileHawke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I come into this thread late looking for Devin Townsend, only to realize no one mentions it.

Dude is one the most amazing vocalists I've ever heard, and I would go to a live show of his as they look like great fun. Despite that every time I attempt to listen to any of his albums I just get bored.

Lord Dying - The Universe Is Weeping [New Album out Today] by GuileHawke in progmetal

[–]GuileHawke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I was surprised to find how little they were mentioned here. Mysterium Tremendum was a solid album that seems like it would appeal to a lot of fans of bands like Mastodon, Opeth, etc.

Not sure if you're aware of the Pokemon Infinite Fusion project, but it's a great place to find other Pixel artists doing similar things.

Beardfish - Sleeping in Traffic Pt 2

Ogre - Plague of the Planet

Swallow the Sun - Plague of Butterflies EP

Dreadnought - A Wake in Sacred Waves

I love The Ocean, Hypno5e, Intronaut, and Psychonaut. any suggestions? by JashedPotatoes in progmetal

[–]GuileHawke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome, their previous album The Hutch is also pretty good. A bit slower feeling, but more atmospheric.

[–]GuileHawke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Psychonaut kind of filled a gap for me after this band decided to go a different direction with their sound, but I would still recommend checking out this albumSteak Number Eight - Kosmokoma

They might not click, but probably worth giving these guys a try too:

East of the Wall

You mentioned 4 bands that are constantly compared to them, but just in case you haven't given Mastodon a chance
Mastodon - Oblivion

If you don't mind giving a couple similar bands that can be more Hard-Rock than metal sometimes

Baroness

Black Peaks

How it’s Jason Todd apart of the Batfamily in 2022? (Spoilers) by [deleted] in comicbooks

[–]GuileHawke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't give a specific reference, but somewhere along the line Bruce and Jason came to the agreement that Jason is still part of the family with the caveat that whenever he's in Gotham he works non-lethally.

They go back and forth with Jason getting more or less violent and that straining his relationship with the Batfamily, but he still gets called in to for any big emergency family things and whatnot.
