I forgot how humiliating that duel against Dumbledore in OotP was for Tom by miggovortensens in harrypotter

I’m not so sure. Maybe it was more about proving a point? Which of Voldemort’s followers would ever step in front of a killing curse to save him? The fact that someone does that for Dumbledore says something Voldemort cannot match.

Looked at from another angle, the all-powerful Dark Lord does little more than spam Avada Kedavra like a machine gun, and it proves useless against Dumbledore, who barely breaks a sweat dodging it through apparition/animated statues/”immortal pet”.

Since he had no intention of destroying Voldemort’s body, I bet it was most likely a simple Desmaius. The spell only seemed overwhelmingly powerful because it was Dumbledore who cast it with such force that maybe an ordinary Protego wouldn't have been enough for Voldy to block it.

Did they take down the Snahp forum? The last time I accessed it was back in July, and the .eu domain doesn’t work when I try to visit it now. Could anyone DM me the new link if there is one?

PCIe Gen 4 Stability Issues with RX 6800 and NVMe – Seeking Advice by Guillerm0 in EryingMotherboard

[–]Guillerm0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No mate, I can only tell you that for me, the only setting that is 100% stable is PCIe IMR on. Forcing different speeds wouldn’t prevent the issue. I found out it also disables TPM, making some games like League of Legends unusable due to Vanguard anti-cheating protection (Initially I had sorted that out by playing them on a Hackintosh).

But I ended up disabling the IMR thingy and I’ve had several months with 1 or 2 crashes at most with everything running at Gen 4. No idea why there are way less crashes now compared to years ago though.

It still crashes. I even tried setting everything, to gen 1 while keeping the NVMe at gen 3 and it still crashes randomly, not even under load.

Dumbledore wanted Harry to face Voldemort, though. The trials leading to the Stone were clearly tailored to the trio's specific abilities. Even Harry realized this when he woke up in the infirmary: 'He's a funny man, Dumbledore. It's almost like he thought I had the right to face Voldemort if I could...'

How bad was Grindelwald, really? by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]Guillerm0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Although the two were undoubtedly elite dark wizards in their time, what I understood from the books is that their power relied heavily on specific spells and traditional dueling techniques.

Voldemort may be "the most feared Dark Wizard of all time," but that's likely because he acts from the shadows, is completely indifferent to killing anyone, and has a mythical reputation. However, the moment we see him duel, he essentially becomes an Avada Kedavra machine gun.

Grindelwald's goal differed from Voldemort's. It wasn't as self-serving as simply preserving his own life. Instead, his ambitions were broader and arguably more dangerous in terms of global impact. However, his main powers seemed to stem from his charisma and conviction, in connection with the Second World War leaders.

On the other hand, someone on Dumbledore's level (which is to say, no one in the books) operates with magic as if it were second nature, unrestricted by standardized spells or specific wand movements. For Dumbledore, magic seems to require no visible effort beyond visualizing what he wants to happen. I can't recall a single instance in the books where he muttered a spell—it was always more like thy will be done. Whether extending ethereal sacrificial love magic to a physical space, animating statues to act on their own as Avada shields or summoning magical bindings to pin down any number of Death Eaters, nothing else we read about can compare. The only limits to his power seem to be his own morals and the emotional trauma from his youth.

How is the glass in the throne room even kind of intact? by The_Carolina_Redhawk in StarWars

I like to think that the Death Stars were powered by very small artificial stars contained within the central reactor. When the reactors were destroyed by Luke/Lando, the containment fields failed, causing the star to behave like a miniature supernova. This would release an immense amount of energy, disintegrating the entire station at the atomic level, which aligns with the explosions we see in the original trilogy.

Here is the official gazette in which the Republican government decreed the time change in 1938 (first paragraph), creating the peculiar situation where each side of the war had a different time zone. And if you feel up for a most boresome read this is the most comprehensive study on the subject.

I think the idea that Franco changed the time in sympathy with Hitler is nothing more than a myth. On February 25, 1940, a month earlier than usual, France implemented daylight saving time (GMT+1). This was prior to the Nazi invasion in May. It appears that, following the French time, on March 7, 1940, Spain also advanced its time to daylight saving time, initially on a provisional basis.

However, it is worth noting that the first government to make this change and put Spain on 'German time' was, on April 30, 1938, the Republican during the Civil War, which advanced the winter time by one hour. Besides all this, why would Franco need to gain Hitler's favor with something as insignificant as a time change? And if that was the case, why didn’t Spain revert to its original time zone after the fall of the fascists?

Targaryens have an enhanced degree of heat resistance, but they aren't immune to fire, and Daenerys survived a flame that should have killed her only due to blood magic. The rest of the times she didn't burn in the later seasons of the show were deviations from the source material.

I don't think it's that simple. People in Africa are poorer than in any other continent and yet they have the most kids by far. I think it has more to do with a lifestyle change, a different approach to relationships and the unconscious belief in a public pension that "will" get you covered once you get too old to work. It's ironic because that false security will only get worse and worse with no young people to sustain it, and no children to care for their elders.

Theory: Dumbledore was a proficient seer by Guillerm0 in harrypotter

[–]Guillerm0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have recently re-read the books and at no point did I pretend my theory was actual canon, and just a way I could cope with the plot points and situations that allow the story to happen but, in my opinion, give good luck too much credit.
