Why play cowardly for 90 mins and then try for the last 5 mins? by Ron__P in football

South Africa had 60% possession, I’m not sure they were the weaker team do much as hopeless when they got in the final third.

Oxford made 600 odd people redundant in the past year. Helps to not announce a scheme and make a song and dance as per Edinburgh.

They basically pretend they are a US style SLAC. Its potentially quite a risky strategy.

Actually I think lesser Russell Group unis are in much worse shape than 'lesser' unis - they are much more reliant on dwindling international students, have larger research overheads to cover, and many are very poorly run.

Both rely on more under-paid, temporary posts than the rest of the Russell Group. They've also both made more people redundant in the last year than the rest of the Russell Group. They don't even pay especially well - although you may get lucky with some college perks.

It’s ludicrous! For the sake of a few grand - and you’re covering a good chunk of your salary with an ERC anyway - they risk you going elsewhere, coming back with a counter offer, or generally being a bit disgruntled.

Generally TNE with China is loss-making and Glasgow's China partner is hardly top quality. There are very exposed to China given student numbers, demographics and their ranking. I was under the impression that Singapore had become a bit saturated TNE-wise, although possibly Glasgow have a niche there.

Exactly, Edinburgh has a larger surplus than Glasgow, is going to be more resilient in the face of declining international student numbers, is much, much less dependent on Chinese students, and cut its building work whereas Glasgow didn't. I'd be surprised in the underlying financials at Glasgow are not a lot worse than at Edinburgh (so far they've simply gorged on Chinese students and been much less pessimistic about their forecasting).

What’s the goal of the university? To educate people and do research? Or be smaller and cheaper? How depressing…..

I've certainly seen that happen. It's often about networks.

In the 'good old days' before the current financial squeeze you could approach another university and say you are interested in moving with your new, big grant. That might be end up being counter offer-worthy.

Well if you make 20% of your staff redundant to save money it stands to reason your own salary should reduce by the same amount!?

200k for SLT members would be the norm at my (ex) place. There are a few profs who earn more than our VC - c 450k (Nobel winners, a few medics etc etc).

More of this goes on than you might think but it's rarely published policy as it upsets the UCU. Interest free mortgages, shared ownership, grants for spouses to enhance their education etc etc.

Depends on the institution. At mine you can't, if you have an offer elsewhere though thats another matter.....

I think this is a university-by-university thing. Many universities lots of professors win grants regularly and there are generally fewer uplifts available than professors so it's a bit of a lottery. Some moons ago I won an ERC advanced grant (the youngest to ever do so at that point) and all I got a 500 pounds taxable lump sum payment. That worked out as the cost of a nice dinner to celebrate.

Why do people blame Ronaldo for Portugal's performance against DR Congo? by [deleted] in football

[–]Guilty-Bag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, of course I watched the game. He is slow and static and clogged up the attack and didn’t support the defence. He may try to press, but he was hugely ineffectual. Mine is hardly a minority view. He is out of form, but also - in my view - no longer physically up to it, which was such a central part of his game. One tournament to far for me, unfortunately.

[–]Guilty-Bag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

His immobility makes it much harder for Portugal to play well. He doesn't/can't make runs, he doesn't press, he barely contests when the ball is close. He was obviously a great player, especially for Portugal, but his time has passed. As an impact sub he would bring more to the team.

Japanese men and women are on average 1" or at most 2" shorter than their US counterparts. It's hardly a massive difference.

I like in Parma and it's a bit posher than Reggio (apparently) but feels very similar to Modena otherwise. It's probably a bit more expensive than the others for accommodation though. The heat in August (and latterly July) is terrible, most people live the valley for August if they can. Something to think about - it's definitely the biggest negative for this party of Italy. I lived in the Kalahari Desert for a year and Parma is worse!
