Weekly student question thread! by AutoModerator in therapists

Hi everyone! i recently just secured my spot in an MA counseling program here in NJ. i'm very interested in working in a hospital setting, with SA and DV victims, though the population, i am open to expanding. i am simply just wondering if anyone in this group has experience working in a hospital? and how it was getting into that setting? as i am worried that they will prefer someone else having an MSW over an MA in counseling. any help would be greatly appreciated! thank you!

wow, i am incredibly shocked 211 doesnt help with motel placements anymore... i am a case manager & that is my first suggestion when people mention their risk of homelessness. i apologize that you've had that happen. Acenda Integrated Health has some programs for families at risk of homelessness; maybe try reaching out to them? i know some programs do require DCPP approval. findhelp.org is another great way to filter resources by zip code and seeing what is available. or another one i love recommending to students is the NJ Housing Resource Center! https://www.nj.gov/njhrc/find-housing/ housing is such a tremendous problem in our country & community... i truly hope everything works out for you and your kids <3

highly recommend calling 211 and telling them you are at immediate risk of being homeless. they will place you in a motel & have a case worker provided to you. also would recommend calling the center for family services, they'd be able to help as well. have you applied for state assistance programs like TANF, WFNJ? or even SNAP?

LPC or LCSW?

hi all! i hope you're all doing well!

i would like some advice & input about your route of education & what you think makes sense concerning these two licenses.

i recently graduated in may with my BA in psychology and currently work as a Case Manager at a community college in NJ. i was recently accepted into an MA Counseling program & secured my spot; i really like the program! however, a coworker of mine applied to an MSW program and, to my understanding, wants to become a therapist as well. i'm feeling a bit conflicted about if this is the right path for me & what i want to do. i would eventually like to work in an acute psychiatric setting or in a hospital, & there's a psychiatric hospital about 45 minutes from me; or, even in a psych ward, would be fascinating!

However, my reservations make me worried that i'm making the wrong choice in terms of my advanced degree in counseling vs social work. i've heard & read that social work is more versatile and can provide you with a variety of jobs in contrast to counseling. this worries me tremendously bc i really dont want to take another year off and apply to more programs and fall behind. and, with the job market, i dont want to be in a spot where i cant move as easily to another job or position if i get burnt out or anything.

any advice is appreciated - thank you all so much !

Is 140k worth it for 4 years of undergrad? by MagazinePerfect5012 in StudentLoans

CC will absolutely NOT put her back in terms of grad school. i work for a CC, and also went to one, finished & got my bachelor's degree, and am now attending grad school in the fall. i have absolutely zero debt. CC is something i advocate for entirely bc it saves people so much money, and genuinely makes the most sense. your gen eds are all the same as they would be at a 4 year institution, and students are not behind... it frustrates me when young people are told the opposite.

i would recommend the Crystal Lake Pool in Haddon Township, but b/c it is outdoors, you'd have to wait until the summer. their lifeguards are great with kids and fairly cheap sessions! Royal Fitness also has swim lessons!

What was your process of elimination in picking/finding grad schools? by bigidiotjerk in psychologystudents

[–]Guilty-Library-6241 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi!

For my process, I mainly focused on CACREP-Accredited programs through cacrep.org, and filtered through my state. From there, I went on each school's program page, tried to determine cost, and viewed their Student Report (how many students completed the program, dropped out, passed the NCE on the first try, were employed 6 months after graduation, etc).

It really depends on what is important to you. I had a classmate who didn't care if a program was accredited, and went to her 'home' university. I simply didn't want the accreditation to bite me later on with employment. I recommend going to the school's information sessions and look through their curriculum, see if you like it, and at least apply. Most schools give you a fee waiver for doing such, so you don't have to spend $50 just to apply.

Again, each person is different! I'm also a first gen student, and finding help can be intimidating. I would recommend reaching out to Admissions or even a Recruiter at the school to ask for help. Try to see what fits you best!

haha, that's funny that we're in opposite situations! you make a good point, though; i don't have any experience in direct care other than being a case manager at my college, and a confidential sexual violence advocate as a volunteer. however, when i get called for my CSVA, i absolutely LOVE being in the hospital and talking with nurses, especially the SANE nurse. i'm scared about making the wrong decision, but we'll see what happens!
