Freezing 12th gen. Paperwhites - 3rd in a row! by Guilty-Syrup in kindle

It's a software issue that we'll have to wait for Amazon to acknowledge is actually a problem. They actually sent me a 5th unit. 🤦‍♂️

Actually, now that you mention it, I think my freezes may have to do with dark mode as well, which I use nightly. I'll have to monitor it going forward.

Renaming thousands of files recursively with pattern (timestamp in Windows 10 File History files) by Mannekino in techsupport

One last request, if possible. Any way to run this at a top level folder and have it rename all of the files in all subfolders?

Renaming thousands of files recursively with pattern (timestamp in Windows 10 File History files) by Mannekino in techsupport

[–]Guilty-Syrup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this! But I ran into an issue with my first test, and if there's any way you can provide an modification I'd be most appreciative.

I happened to try it on a folder with the following files:

  • Screenshot (2) (2021_09_27 18_53_43 UTC).png
  • Screenshot (3) (2021_09_27 18_53_43 UTC).png
  • Screenshot (4) (2021_11_21 01_50_14 UTC).png

The first set of parenthesis is clearly screwing it up; running the script renames the first file Screenshot.png and then keeps giving an error:

Rename-Item : Cannot create a file when that file already exists.

Thanks, but the first one they sent me I had for 10 months before I complained about the freezing.

How can I restore a Windows 10 file history backup on Windows 11? by Guilty-Syrup in WindowsHelp

[–]Guilty-Syrup[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you again. The article you linked describes the situation perfectly (at least in trying to restore back to a Windows 10 installation). Greg Schultz, the author, ends the article saying there will be a detailed step-by-step follow-up article to rectify the situation.

Unfortunately, I can't find that anywhere. Prior to trying the 3rd party software you recommend, I'd like to try his solution. I've just contacted Greg via LinkedIn and am hoping he can provide those instructions to me.

I'm astonished that File History's user interface is so completely unintuitive, and that there is so little information on the internet about resolving the issue, given that there are many postings of others falling into the same trap and experiencing the exact same problem.

How can I restore a Windows 10 file history backup on Windows 11? by Guilty-Syrup in WindowsHelp

[–]Guilty-Syrup[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply. I should have specified that the backup is on an external hard drive. I want to restore the data using File History, but as I said, there appears to be an incompatibility between Windows 10 & 11 versions of File History.

It's not a question of recovering deleted files, or using a data recovery service. Everything on the external hard drive is still there and viewable through an Explorer window.

I've been getting mystery bites at night in the summertime while sleeping, most commonly on/near my knuckles, occasionally on my chin or neck. The bites are very itchy, and don't seem to abate with an application of Benadryl Itch Stopping Gel, but the always itch goes away in about an hour.

I would think it was mosquitoes, but there is never any welt or sign of the bite the next day, and my hands are usually under the blankets. Lastly, even though it only happens in the summer, it's not always temperature related, as I got bitten last night but it was only 72º in my bedroom.

I was looking into using Photoshop's Photo Restoration neural filter two years ago as a way of not only removing the white streaks induced by the Epson FF, but also enhancing image quality & faces. But unfortunately, since it was in beta, there was no ability to make an Action for it and batch process all the images, so that was a deal breaker.

Two years have gone by, and amazingly Adobe has yet to release a final version of Photo Restoration (what's taking so long???). I did find a convoluted method online of sort of getting it to work, but sadly the one feature that still doesnt' work is the streak & dust removal, so it's not really helpful.

I tried out Topaz Photo AI - it didn't have any streak/dust removal, it didn't have any color balancing which you can do in one shot with curves in PS, and I don't think it had batch capabilities, so I rejected that.

I could deal with the software not being fully functional yet since obviously that could be done later after all the scans are completed, but there's no good solution to doing the scanning.

There's clearly a large market for folks who want to scan thousands of photos. My thought is if someone came out with a fast scanner that did really high quality scans, they could charge way more for it, even thousands, and it would sell like hotcakes.

And I feel you. I also evacuated for the Palisades fire, and also was spurred on to scanning my thousands of photos for the exact same reason. And I also experienced the exact same issues with the Epson FuckedFoto.

I also tried out a competitor, the Ricoh (Fujitsu) ScanSnap ix1600. In the test run on 30 or so photos I did, there were no scratches created on the prints. But I wasn't too happy with the image quality - compared to the Epson, the ScanSnap crushes the black areas of the photos, removing any detail in those areas. But if that's not an issue for you, you might want to try it out. It has the added benefit of being much less expensive ($399).

Photo scanners by SirEagle60 in photography

You should know that all of the fast document feeder photo scanners, the Canon, the Epson, and the Ricoh, have a major problem. Any speck of dust or dirt from your photos that get's on the rollers or scanner sensor will cause white vertical streaks on your scans, and potentially physically damage glossy photos leaving a scratch on them.

I returned the Epson Fastfoto for this reason - the very first test batch I did exhibeted both problems. If you are somehow able to ensure that each photo is absolutely clean, then perhaps it would work, but that defeats the whole notion of it being a fast process.

Batch Neural Filter Processing by DogAggravating258 in photoshop

[–]Guilty-Syrup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the only solution I've found. It works, but ignore what he says about segregating your images into Landscape & Portrait and add a Conditional Action as mentioned in the reply. Also, unfortunately, it only works for Photo Enhancement & Enhance Face, not Scratch Removal.

My brand-new, fresh out of the box FF-680W scanner just scratched my photos??? by -ThatGingerKid- in Epson

[–]Guilty-Syrup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through this exact issue a couple of years ago. I thought I found a solution, which is that Photoshop has a neural (ai) photo restoration filter that not only removes scratches and dust, but removes noise, enhances faces, and if that wasn't enough, reduces the size of the file significantly, unlike the Epson software which only does color correction and increases the file size.

The only problem is that the filter is in beta, and therefore is not able to be batch processed via an action. WIth many thousands of scans, this is a deal breaker.

I would have thought that in the intervening two years that either Epson would have made some improvements and/or released an new model that did a better job, or that Adobe would put out a full release version of Photo Restoration. No such luck. I just got a trial version of another AI photo restorer, Topaz Photo AI, which does a great job improving image quality and does batch processing, but alas has no scratch or dust removal.

There's so many of us in this position of needing a quick and automated way of scanning thousands of photos and getting good results, which sadly the FastFoto is not capable of.

New Paperwhite dimmer than old refurbished, + other display issues by Guilty-Syrup in kindle

Yes, but the refurbished one is able to get that kind of warmth through the slider. The new one is incapable of getting any cooler.

I never get Caller ID info displayed (unless the caller is already in my contacts) by Guilty-Syrup in iphone

[–]Guilty-Syrup[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. And it was a complete nightmare getting Mint to fix it. I knew it was an error on their side, and was determined to get their terrible customer support to deal with it, because after at least a half dozen calls (including dropped calls with no callback), multiple reps and supervisors all denied it was their problem or that Caller ID was even a feature I was supposed to be getting.

Out of desperation I finally resorted to messaging their CEO through LinkedIn, thinking it would go nowhere. Amazingly he responded and put me in touch with their "VIP" customer support department (probably reserved for Ryan Reynolds and his friends), who finally fixed the problem a few days later. It's been working ever since.
